Jesus I'm getting some grief here from my boy - 6 yrs old! and even the missus about a Wii for xmas (yes sadly its on the horizon already)

I've only done some brief research but I thought who better to tell the plus minus points of all of them than our on board Cafe Gaming Titans!

I cant be arsed spending three fking days :wenger: on the net going into every facet of each one.

Any incisive important knowledge to help bring me to a quick decision would be greatly appreciated - the main ins and outs of either one total full in costs etc

the wii is the cheapest and 6 year olds will love all the pretty colours. You'll love it too.

If you actually like 4hour gaming sessions and lots of games its between the ps3 and the xbox. I'll leave that up to the fanboys.

xbox is cheaper,

As Redlambs said, if its for the missus and your 6 year old then wii would be the best option. If you went for either a 360 or ps3 then the closest your family would get into contact with it is when they're trying to peel you off the thing.

The PS3 is far and away the best bit of gear by a million miles, far more than just a game console, but there aren't many games for a 6 year old yet.

So a Wii it is then. Cheap and fun.

X-box360 is nearly as cheap with loads of games but has a horrendous failure rate. I had an X-Box but I wouldn't touch a 360 with a barge pole.

....sadly dont think she'll swallow that

Get a new computer.

Or an Amiga. Seriously, you can get an Amiga and a lot of games used for a lot less than any of these fancy pants new consoles.

Christ I thought they were direct competitors of the Sinclair computer back in the 70s :wenger: - the ZX Spectrum I recall

will need something a bit more up to date than that I feel

I had the same choice to make and if it was for you i'd say ps3 based on a number of factors. As it's for your kid and your wife's keen go for the wii.

Get wii fit too so that you always, always have a 'fit' wife. It'll be worth it :p

The wii does have good games. The Call of duty game coming out later this month should be the first proper online FPS for the system and there's a fair bit out already. I think you've got the Wii and 360 at a similer price bracket except you have to pay a ridiculous amount use an Xbox online and games are more expensive but there's a lot more of them and it does have the best online, the PS3 is more expensive and is a much better piece of kit than both. The attraction of the Wii for women and children is over stated considering most of what's released for them is trash (shovelware) and all the Wii prefix games are very brief. It probably comes down to what you'll play and what you'll play with them. I'd also say don't dismiss handheld gaming nowadays, it's cheaper and isn't a massive downgrade in graphics.

for the family definitly get a wii, great fun for everybody

You reckon?

for good clean fun for the family, get a wii

plus it will encourage your son not to sit around as in traditional console gaming. He'll be on his feet playing bowling, wii fit etc

Well it has to be said that reason is worth it alone - keeping the wife fit is a prerequisite for keeping this man very happy :D

Well thanks - it seems the general consensus is a Wii for the family and a ps3 that I could sneak into my office just for me! (I wish)

I've seen prices all over the net but tbh in Asda, Argos, Tescos they're going for £179 -200 consol and games all-in

Is that good ? sounds good to me

I own all three and my favourite of the lot is the 360, has a great range of games suiting all tastes, though the Wii wouldnt be a bad choice either considering your family but you'd be missing out on the HD goodness.

sounds fair enough I think though I've not followed it much. good luck with your purchases ;)

My 3 year old son is getting an Amiga 1200 for Christmas, you bet your fecking life on it. And I cherrish that little box 20 times more than my PS3. He'd better take care of it, or I'll put him in the bin.

Brilliant punishment!

Yeah that's 100% correct, but you're missing the point. The 360 is the best for gaming and that's what counts. The gamers I know who have the 360 & PS3 never touch the PS3 for gaming...

For a 6 year old the Wii is obviously the most appropriate.

I'm looking at the Wii for my two. About $250-$300 for the console, 5 games and two remotes (incl one nunchuck).

my kids are <8 so I think that'll suit them best.

It will. Where are we now, about 23m vs 17m? Considering the price difference and the time in launch, PS3 is doing ok.

Errrrr....

Anyway, the point is that the PS3 is too expensive to produce. They got their marketing wrong if you ask me. Consumers buy game consoles to play games and a dvd players to watch dvd's if you get my grift.

If it was 199 quid, then I'd say you were wrong. The reason it's not barnstorming the market is its price. Why that was done and whether it was good or not is something we'll have to wait and see about. I've said before, I don't think that Ken designed the thing to have Blu-ray in it, it would have been more powerful, cheaper, and on time, but the parent company shoehorned BD into it. In terms of becoming the defacto high-def video disc format, PS3 did its job.

The PS3 is gradually catching up on the decent games stakes but I wouldn't buy a 360 mainly because the failure rate is so ludicrously high even if new ones are a bit better no matter what. Then again I don't really care about games and indeed can't be bothered with the majority of games.

That said I use the PS3 95% for watching BluRay movies and watching downloaded movies, which it shows and scales brilliantly. My 9yo also isn't a huge gamer. He will play a couple of hours a week but he is far keener on movies and music. He also has fairly limited time due to the amount of sport he plays and other stuff like music lessons and being out cycling with his mates.

In all fairness the PS2 wasn't exactly the most technically reliable console either, remember the disk reading error? Didnt stop it from being a terrific console with an awesome library of games.

I never had a single error with mine and I don't know anayone else who did. Not saying there weren't problems but they were presumably within the normal range expected for hardware. The 30% failure rate of XBox 360s due to a variety of problems, only some of which have been improved, is ludicrous.

The PS3s problem now is that stand alone BD players are now cheaper, even though not as capable or updatable. It's also still too noisy, but that should be solved by spring.

Noisy? I have never noticed a noise from mine.

Well, no, it's not noisy like that with mine either, but certain people do get pissed off with the hum it makes. Turn off the TV and leave it on, totally silent room, you can hear it. Yes, that bothers some people, but a 3.2Ghz processor needs a fan to keep it cool. A stand alone player will not have that problem.

RSX is now at 65nm, Cell will be at 45nm come end of Feb, so nobody will ever hear the fan again with those units.

If it was 199 and had better games then everybody would throw their 360away. No doubt. But they can't afford to sell it at 199 unless they can bring the cost price down. (Which they can't because of the Blu Ray chip...) Catch 22. Sony should have killed the 360, which is pretty crap (but does the job). I'm sorry but even I could have done a better job then the marketing guru's at Sony on this one.
