Most Games are played with ONE Ball but the REAL g
We paid 30 mil for one central defender, a world class one too. But the question which every one is asking is whether it is worth spending that kind of money on one player. We have spent 30mil and still are having defensive problems as we do not have enough players as cover. Do you guys think it is wiser to buy 3 defenders instead of one or it is better to have 1 defender instead of 3???
 
What kind of question is that?

Which are the alternatives? I could think of 3 defenders I would rather have instead of 1 (being Rio) and I can think of whole defensive units I wouldn't trade for Rio.

Is 30m a lot of money? Yes, I was gutted to see us spending that much. Bad business? We'll see, Rio has a lot to live up to now but let's not start knocking him before he can show us his worth!
 
£30mill for rio! of £15mill for fabio cannavaro! hmmmm
 
If Rio performs as we expect him to I'll be very happy to see him in Red for 10 years.

Cannavaro would have been a stop-gap, we needed final long-term solutions.

If we need other players then we should look into it separately. If 30m left us unable to sign anyone else (no way!) then the Board (and SAF) will have to answer for that. Not Rio.
 
i hope rio does stand up to his price tag, as i have him in my fantasy team, but you say fabio would have been a stop gap! hes only 26ish, so there is no reason he wouldnt spend a good 8yrs or so in the team.. and it looks like nestas going for £20mill, so if he wanted SAF could have had great centre halfs for £35mill...
 
Cannavaro will be 29 next season, while if Nesta was available for 20m he'd already be gone.

Both would have been bigger risks than Ferdinand.

So Blanc is too old and slow, playing for the money but Cannavaro would be brilliant for us at 34. Yeah, right.

I can't see Cannavaro spending 8 years at OT either, he will always rather be in a big Italian team.

so if larrys not here for the money! SAF has tried to sign him 5 or 6 times, or so he says! and hes turned us down each time!! so why at the END of his long and fantasic playing career, has he let us sign him? the answer is a bumper payday! its the same with most but not all, old foreign players, easy money.
 
Actually it was 3 or four times, and he was contracted to other clubs at the time.

I'm sure he was making decent money with Inter when we offered him to join.

The problem is not with Rio's purchase. With his age, potential and nationality, I'm sure he is our best choice. The problem is that our purchase should not stop here. We should get one more inexpensive defender as backup and then the 4th striker. As fergie said, now it is "the buyer's market". Some players are available for a big bargain or even totally free.

I have been going to games since I was 8 years old
