I disagree with the original post.
I think, United, still, by in large, are the most respected and adored big club in the English media - TV or print - compared to any other club in the land. And that is true since the 1960s.
Of course, there will always be haters, but then you can't expect every media person to love United. That doesn't happen.
Every successful club is looked down upon by rivals - jealousy being the primary fuel. Just ask Real Madrid - they are hated even more - chiefly because they are more successful (of course, other reasons too).
In the 70s and 80s, there was no online media, let alone social media. It was difficult to disseminate hatred when such mediums didn't exist.
We would have been treated exactly the same or even worse if social media and online media (in this scale) existed during SAF days, simply because we were winning more.
The more we fall into the abyss of mediocrity, the more people will stop bothering.
