Has there ever been a better window than the summer of 22?

He did for about 4 games, even scored some worldlies.

The premier league just wasn’t prepared for him, and more specifically his pace, and he took everyone by surprise. Gutted he didn’t make it but his limitations began to show after a while.

I think he was still on a run of form at this point but that celebration after equalising against Palace put huge doubts over whether he had the mentality for this level.

07/08
Nani
Anderson
Hargreeves
Rafael
Tevez

maybe, played a huge part in league and champions league victories

This was the best window in terms of how hyped I was for the transfer.

Nani was being talked up as the next Ronaldo

Anderson was being called the next Ronaldinho

Hargreaves was starting to get recognise as one of the best players in his role in the world.

Rafael and Fabio were massively hyped up especially Fabio as a goal scoring left back. Also there was the mystique around signing a couple of talented players directly from Brazil.

Tevez came off the back of a great season for West Ham

I'm super happy with the current transfer window too but it's way too early to call it the best. We have brought in some quality players with much more of a fighting mentality than last year's squad had. If they can keep on their present trajectory this will definitely be one of our better windows.

Hope this thread doesn't age as badly as the one where someone claimed Dan James was our best signing after RVP.

Best combined summer and winter transfer windows: 2005 - 2006
Summer:
VdS
Park
Foster

Winter:
Evra
Vidic

Nothing will ever beat the summer of Nani, Anderson, Tévez and Hargreaves for me. The latter two vital in the CL/PL double. It was a time when there was still some mystery to signings. I knew we were after Nani, I didn’t know much about him but I knew he was meant to be pretty good, and when we announced the double capture of him an Anderson, I was so excited. Had no clue who Anderson was but quickly found out he was a Golden Boy winner and had the potential to be a world beater. It was so mysterious and exciting.

Now even 15 year olds have YouTube comps, there’s no mystery anymore.

This summer’s signings have been excellent, I love them. But that was a time when you could still be surprised, where there was still a sense of enigma to foreign footballers.

Reminds me of when I turned on teletext one day when I was still at school, and found we signed Andy Cole for 6m plus Keith Gillespie. Didn’t even have a clue we were after him. It was amazing.

In terms of lettlng people go it has to be Ince and Hughes in 95 and letting the class of 92 step in.
Value for money? Yeah the winter of 05 and signing Vidic and Evra.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves with this signings. Malacia is young and as much as I like him Eriksen has a serious health issue and has been signed on a 3 year contract. Offcourse we would all love for him to stay healthy but it doesnt mean he will.
Casemiro despite being quality is over 30 years old and I still remeber a lot of the CAF loving Matic when we signed him at a similar age and the same/similar position.

Or coming home after summer vacation to go through newspapers or internet to find out what happened in the past 3 weeks

The one with Nani, Anderson (started really well), Hargreaves the miserable feck, and Tevez the even greater cnut. And maybe the Da-Silva tweens were in that window as well? 07/08, anyway.

This was us strengthening after winning a PL title, as it should have been.

They all, to an extent, proved vital to our CL win, and most were pretty valuable for other PL wins to follow.

If we’ve exhausted our transfer budget for this season and put a dent into next’s, we might regret spending all of that money on Antony, especially when it means Sancho will end up benched to accommodate him, Rashford and a centre forward. I’m not sure how that signing really improves our ceiling as a team. He’s a decent player for sure, but I think we still have bigger priorities and will regret not funnelling those funds towards a centre forward

The rest of the window was good though so far. Martinez looks fantastic right now, really tenacious and a good complement to our three other less aggressive defenders. Eriksen added some much needed passing ability to our midfield, but we could do with reshaping the team to get him a bit further forward for his playmaking. Casemiro’s plugged a much needed gap as a top class DM. Our new FB looks a top player too: Luke Shaw. Great bargain.

The one big call ETH has been justified on is backing De Gea for the time being. He’s improved a lot and hasn’t been a liability this season. Hopefully we are bold enough to look for an upgrade this summer though.

Nah. 23 Summer will be when we sign Kane, Bellingham and De Jong.
