I don't know if the Pogues song thing is PC gone mad but people need to accept the characters that people are trying to convey in book, movies, songs etc. Also that song was written years ago. McGowan's response was prefrect in that he was trying to convey an imperfect woman in the song. That song always stood out to me (despite being a rather weak Pogues song overall) as a christmas song because it represents the way a lot of people feel around that time of year instead of the 'Here comes Santa Claus' stuff. It's more real to life. The outrage reminds me of some youtube comments on Backstreet Freestyle by Kendrick. Loads saying he's a typical rapper talking about sex and women where if they had listened to the album they's have realised that the track was basically a skit on that sort of song and him begrudging that he used to think that way. We need to protect expression. How many of these PC people love Game of Thrones but don't realise Daenerys was literally raped as a 13 year old in the books. Doesn't mean that GRRM is that type of guy but he is writing accurately for the time the story is set in.

The big, fat manc was someone I'd never pay to go & see, but he made a good living out of it so I doubt he really gave a shit what people thought of him. I sued to watch Harry Enfield videos as a kid, like 6-7 years old, or younger. Pretty sure I knew even then that they were taking the piss with those sketches.

Of course it is. My question was though is how would such a sketch be received today by this generation ? Social media would probably eat itself, especially by those - & let's not kid ourselves they don't exist in their droves - who can't see past the satire.

I think anyone who had a brain in their nut would be able to see it for what it is. Mitchell and Webb did a similar sketch relatively recently and it was very well received.
OK, let me throw the question out there. What is, & what isn't, acceptable as satirical humour ? Is religion as a whole fair game ? Or are certain religions exempt from being lampooned ? Throughout my life I've seen many sketches taking the piss out of priests, vicars, nuns etc. I ask the question because, ironically enough, the BBC had quite a lot of complaints a few years ago when Harry Enfield & Paul Whitehouse were involved in a sketch making fun of a young girl in a burka. I just heard a song 'I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus' and I think it is sexist. It suggests that Santa is a man and only mummy is allowed to kiss him. It disgusting how we teach kids to sing these songs at schools. What kind of bigoted adults will they turn into?

I'd love to know exactly what you mean by the term 'you guys'. Surely you're not generalizing a whole swath of people who express their concerns regarding just how much political correctness has gripped societies right across the western world. Because guess what bro, people like me were being kind, respectful, & decent to people of other races, colour, & creed long before you were born. We didn't need PC to let us know that it was offensive & insulting to the aforementioned to single them out for negative treatment because of where they were born, or the colour of their skin, or their religious beliefs. 'You guys' seem to have this massive misconception that we want political correctness to be abolished so that we can embark on some sort of orgy of verbal warfare on people who are non-white, gay, trans-gender etc, etc. This is all about free speech & how it's becoming slowly eroded because of 'you guys'. Self appointed moral guardians of what can, & can't, be said. So 'you guys' really need to wind your respective necks in pretty sharply before you yourselves find yourselves in a situation whereby you have plenty to say but don't have the media platform to say it.
In keeping in line with the comedy theme, you might want to spend the next 10 minutes listening to Rowan Atkinson talking about free-speech on this video clip. Hopefully, it might sink in. But I'm not holding my breath.

Of all the anti-PC arguments anything involving a TV show genuinely makes the least sense to me. Until the 1960s plays could be regarded as blasphemous and until about the 90s swearing and nudity was just a no-go. Of all the areas to highlight...that's the medium that if anything highlights how much things have changed for the better and how much more open society is now. Even if there's the occasional weirdo who doesn't understand that the lyrics to Fairytale of New York are clearly from the perspective of a character.
I mean, look at something like Monty Python and the Life of Brian. It was slated heavily...but it's not even that controversial unless you're a fecking weirdo! And, guess what, it wasn't the left who were criticising it. The anti-PC crowd isn't railing against rules in this or that medium, they're railing against there being more LGBT and non-white people on these mediums. PC at it’s heart is a good thing. Be nicer to people, basically. And when it surrounds that basic principle it’s great, however it can stray a bit from that idea sometimes. Perspective is lost somewhere along the way and we end up bending over backwards to be offended on behalf of people who weren’t necessarily even complaining anyway. That’s when it can go a bit over the top imo.
