Harvey Neville

Well he was in the UK before moving to Valencia and he preferred City to us. I guess when shit hits fan everyone does what's best for his career. That include 'mercenaries' like Pogba and ultra loyal United fans like the Nevilles.

Don't thint he preferred City more like at that time City had the best facilities for kids his age .

A number of Utd players sent their kids to city for the same reasons .

Valid and interesting points, thanks for pointing them out. I'm not from England nor do I follow their youth set up so I'm obviously out of the loop. Was just basing my comments on England's previous record of quality youths since the golden era which is terrible for a country with their population.

The FA obviously are following suit of other countries if they currently as good as you guys mentions. For our sake, lets hope there are several United players in those youth world champion teams.

There weren't unfortunately.

Angel Gomes had been the captain of the u17 side but has fallen behind a little and lost his place at u17 World Cup. That age group is seen as the most remarkable possibly ever for England. They had beaten Germany 8-1, reached the final of the u17 Euros and lost on penalties to Spain but got revenge at the World Cup where they beat Spain easily in the final 5-2.

Axel Tuanzebe was a regular in the u20 group that won the u20 World Cup last year but missed the tournament due to playing for us at the end of the season (the u20 WC is held in early May for some reason).

Underneath that, United's Mason Greenwood is regarded by most as the most talented u17 player England has currently, though the age group isn't as good as the u17 WC winners. That said they reached the semi finals of the Euros this year where they lost to Holland on penalties. They were certainly as good as any side in the competition and they were missing their two best players Greenwood and Jones. United's Garner and Laird are also in that group. All three United lads are excellent players. Garner is reminiscent of Carrick and Laird is a classy full back or centre back. Both are real ball players.

Below those age groups Shortiere and Mengi from United are very highly rated in the England set up.

Thanks for the insight, @Classical Mechanic !

Is living abroad all that relevant? Poveda Carlo traveled from England to Colombia for youth football among others I think.

Less exposed to England scouts at those levels. Or they might want him to be a full-time academy scholar first before considering calling him up.

Incorrect, Neville signed for City when they were still at Platt Lane, obviously preferred the coaching at City, very different from Utd at the younger ages.

Just shows why England players need to go aboard. It obviously helps having 2 professional footballers in your close family and know what's best for your development though.

I can't help but feel if all the top youths at the top English teams went to clubs aboard, England would have a brilliant team by now. Instead of stagnating on City and Chelsea's famed academies.

Didn't England won every single youth world cup recently?

Mou is gonna destroy him. Phil better mind his tongue from now on :p

On serious note. Hope he does well. As player, we (our fan) love the Neville for their commitment for the club

No doubt Daddy influenced that move
If he were younger then yes. Talent is hard to tell when you're 10 or younger but he's gotten to the age where United are making aggressive cuts so you need to be good.

Guðjohnsen's eldest got cut from La Masia. I think his middle son also got cut whilst the youngest was kept on. The oldest now plays in Iceland and the two younger players just made the switch to Real. Youth football at these clubs can be brutal. Kane said as much about his time with Arsenal.

Playing abroad severely limits the number of clubs available to you though - off the top of my head I can only think of Cruz Azul.

It will be for nothing if there isn't a pathway into their first team though. These players need to be playing competitively from 18 or so, younger if they are up to it. It is incumbent on the younger kids to start making smarter decisions for their careers rather than just hanging around waiting for a loan to a club where your long term development isn't valued.

Isn't he 2003 born? My memory's a bit blurry for this one. Iirc he's same age group as McAtee.
Sorry to be a bit off topic but is McAtee the one who was extremely highly rated but switched to City?

Yes. The Telegraph called it the Ryan Giggs moment. Seems very highly rated.

Which was a complete brief by City as the reason McAtee left at 11 years old was money and because his dad was mad at United because McAtee's older brother was released

City went to press to hype up their academy with a number of names; Sancho, Doyle, Mcatee, Diaz etc.

I don't think Mcatee has appeared for England much recently so I'm not sure how he's progressing. His thread on Bluemoon isn't active either. @khoazany might know.

City are the only team who brief their u13 matches results. Such is the desperation to portray there usefulness of the academy. Luckily Sancho saw the light. So has Bobby Duncan. More should follow I think.

Sancho left. Diaz contract expires next year I think. No clue about McAtee or Doyle.

And yes you're right City does brief about the u13 results which is quite pathetic.

Doyle was captain for England through a few age groups but James Garner took the captaincy for the u17 Euros this summer. Doyle was a starter but got injured, scored a couple of penalties. He has character but is a bit blood and thunder charging about everywhere. Not sure how good he is from what I've seen.

England has many good talents at those age groups and McAtee was born late in the year.

Here's a nice piece on him:

Harry Neville has 'similar characteristics' to David Beckham , according to Valencia academy coach Emerson Esteve.

The winger is one of a number of first-year scholars who have been drafted into United's academy after joining the club on his 16th birthday last month.

Neville made a big impression in his three seasons at Valencia and, tellingly, was kept on even when his father, Phil , left after a spell working on the club's coaching staff.

The teenager quickly earned comparisons with Beckham in the Spanish press and the United great jokingly asked friend Phil if he had been 'showing Harvey videos of me?' after he uploaded a clip of his son swinging in a teasing cross.

And Esteve, who coached Neville in Valencia's under-16s last season, certainly sees the similarities.

"Being aware that he is still very young and he has much to improve, he has similar characteristics to Beckham," he told MEN Sport. "He's a fast player, has a good capacity to cross from the line and is hard-working.

"Football is so difficult, you know, but if he keeps his effort and dream, I'm sure that he could have a good career as a player. I hope so because he really deserves it."

Neville Sr previously expressed reservations about United's academy 'in terms of the quality of kids they are producing' but it had always been his son's dream to make the grade at his boyhood club.

The youngster has now joined up with his new team-mates at their pre-season training camp in Austria after spending time working with a strength and conditioning coach in Stockport.

So what can United fans expect from the No.7?

"Harvey is a teenager who has a dream - to be professional footballer," Esteve added. "I know he made a big effort to learn Spanish and lived away from his family at some moments, but he is a responsible guy - and always does his best.

"He has many qualities. He understands the game very well and all of his team-mates had a good relationship with him. He is so responsible when he is training. But if I had to pick one quality, I would say he is a good guy. He is one of the kindest players I have ever trained.

"He always listened to me and the other coaches, and he is a clever teenager. He was in good conditions as a player when he started with me but, last year, I think he began to understand the game better and take better decisions during the match."

According to The Sun, he has left United and joined his dad at Inter Miami. He will initially join their sister club Fort Lauderdale.

Probably a good move for him really, get some first team football young to differentiate him from the other players his age.

Don't know much about the lads footballing ability but if you ever wondered why ex pro's offspring's seem to make it as pro's this is further evidence.
