Harry Maguire | Signed

I have a theory that Man City feign interest in players who wouldn't get into their first team (Sanchez, Fred, Maguire) just so their rivals bid an extortionate amount for them.

AWB went for 50m - if that’s any indication of prices then Maguire for 70m is fine.

AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Shaw

Seems good to me. Hopefully sell one or two of our CBs to help recoup some of the fee.

Near on £180m on that defence, and are any of them really top class?

My thoughts exactly. Would be more than happy with that back four for next season.

Would be happy enough if we got him. Hes better than what we have. The fee? Gave up caring about these things a long time ago, it is what it is.

As a unit they can be.

It's a weird one - on paper TAA and Robertson never looked world class and nor does Matip but one signing and it all clicked into place for them. (discounting Alison here because we already have DDG. I think ours is an issue of playing out from the back and solidity at right back which we would fix).

It's a lot of cheese...
Hopefully we'll ship out some of the other defenders we've got, to re-coup some of the fee: Rojo/Darmian/Jones.
If we could get £40m for those combined it wouldn't be so bad.

In:
James £15m
AWB: £50m
Maguire: £70m
Total: £135m

Out:
Valencia: free
Rojo/Darmian/Jones: £40m
Zaha to Arsenal for £60m (25%) of the fee = £15m

Net spend: 80m

That wouldn't be so bad, to strengthen in all the areas we need, obviously the cost of a striker on top.

Could likely get someone like Tah or Romagnoli for less but if this is who the manager wants then so be it.

Depends what you define as top class
Walker - Stones - Laporte - Mendy
Cost around 2-220 and I wouldn't consider any of them top class either

Sometimes it's about how they play as a team, how the team sets up in general
Thats not me saying City's defence is bad btw, but I wouldn't consider any of them top of their class

Based on last seasons PL form that would be a very good defence. Especially if theres a pre season where they can drill together. Can also recoup some of the money and wages by selling darmian and rojo and maybe some others.

I know a lot of the fantasy football people wanted us to sign a fantasy football back 4 of De Ligt Cancelo Skriniar and Telles but thats not feasible.

Would be a good back 4 of proven and established PL players. But will we sign Maguire? We were meant to be signing him last summer according to sky but was obviously BS

What about Rojo, Jones, Baily? Why is it so hard to sell them first before buying new CB?

Solskjaer must be top manager if he thinks that he can go for top 4 next season with this squad.

Would complete a good and established back 4. Plus I think we need to be more realistic with our targets, with De Ligt off to Juventus and Koulibaly extremely unlikely to move. I actually rate Harry Maguire, plus I think his style would work quite well with Lindelof.

fair point, but those 4 may not be top class but for almost similar fees they are far better than what you bought. Not a dig, just an opinion. Mendy is a bit meh i reckon but the other 3 all better, comfortably so, although i also think John Stones can be shite

Value for money is more important than the fee i guess £70m, chuck it at Ajax for de Ligt would get yrs out of him. Add a bit more and get Koulibaly. Save 45m and get Toby off Spurs. Maguire really isnt that good. All opinions though

Laporte is top class.

Or Alderweireld.

He didn’t have a great season and apart from being more comfortable on the ball, I don’t think there is much difference between him and Smalling. Certainly not enough to spend that amount of cash on him.

Yup me too.

Maguire could be our captain. Can’t be said about other players we’re linked with.

I honestly can’t believe people are moaning at this potential signing and yet want someone like Koulibaly for MORE money, who is unproven in the league. This very much smacks of making a snap decision about someone based on things like their nationality or appearance or what your mate has told you .

Tell me what Koulibaly is better at because it damn sure isn’t Leadership, heading ability, reading the game or even ability on the ball. He’s a bit faster, that’s it! We need a defender with the things that Maguire is good at more, IMO. Perfect partner for Lindelof for most games and then Smalling for the games where we’ll come up against a lot of crosses.

How would Koulibaly do in the PL though? We dont know. De Ligt wont be here for years, hes bummed anyone who wants to sign him by saying hes using them as a stepping stone to go to Real or Barca later on, and Alderweireld obviously not amongst our targets

Maguire and Lindelof would be a slow pairing. I think that they are more suited to play alongside hodo erm smalling

When you have 70% of the ball and score 3 goals a game it’s a little bit easier to carry a weaker defence.

We aren't getting De Ligt or Koulibaly so he's the next best option really.

It's silly money of course, but we're desperate and needs must.

We can't go into another season with Phil Jones or Chris Smalling as a first choice centre back.

Would rather go into next season with what we have than spend this obscene amount of money. Being better than Chris Smalling does not mean we should spend £70m on a player. Neither is being "better than what we have". Fellaini was better than Cleverley.

There simply have to be much better options available at that price, he isn't that good.

Your point was that the defence would have cost 180m
I was just pointing out City's cost 220m

(All of which cost their prices a few years ago and price still seem on the rise)

65-70m should be enough surely? I mean they sold Mahrez for 65m last summer and he's an attacker

Between Evans and the lad that was on loan at Celtic they already have a new partnership lined up

Just sell him Leicester

Personally think it would be a good signing for that price but it just highlights how ridiculous the decision was to not get him last summer. We'd have got top 4 if we had.

I made that point last summer on here - Said our defence would be Valencia, Smalling Jones and Young. Was shouted down because apparently I had exaggerated by naming our worst back 4. Was like everyone forgot the lineup in the FA cup final loss to Chelsea. And then we saw an alarming amount of starts for those two and too many as a pairing.

Maguire is much better. And the people rubbishing him are the same who rubbished 75 million on Van Dijk. Thats what it costs in this market

He's got no turn of pace and is poor at recovering after a mistake. If we play high up the pitch, we will get murdered. If you are paying 70M for a CB you want a ready made world class player which he is not.

I think the myth of needing one quick CB is overblown.

And although not Rio levels of rapid, neither Lindelof or Maguire are a sloth.

Difference is Mahrez only had a couple of years left on his contract and kicked up a massive fuss for nearly 2 years to get a move

Maguire still has 4 years on his contract and isn’t making a fuss for the move

still journos on twitter claiming Leicester will refuse it, and it isnt enough. Madness that

If we got a pacey out and out defensive midfielder in as well then I think a defensive unit of De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire and Shaw is very solid and could grow into a great unit over time seeing as Maguire is the oldest at 25-26 years old.

I know Maguire lacks pace but his pro’s far outweigh his con’s and he’s far better than anyone we have at centre back, he’s consistently been one of the best centre backs in the league for 2-3 years now. We lack a leader at the back and leadership throughout the squad and both Maguire and Lindelof are great on the ball so could transform how we play from the back especially with the pace we have up top.

Who do you think we should get?
Alderweireld for a third of the price, givfe him a 3 yr contract and starting planing to move him on after 2 when the inevitable decline starts. Also gives time for Tuanzebe to develop and us to look for another promising talent if needed. Thats just off the top of my head. It's not like we're nearing deadline day with only Lindelof.
