I am glad it is settled. He brings stability to our biggest weakness last near. That alone should be worth 12-15 points. Are we a shoe in for the league, no but will we compete for it yes. I think we are definitely top 4, the extra funds for cl next year alone will offset the cost of the deal.

Who watched Maguire last season and believed he was worth £80m or is one of the best defenders in the world?

I have to be honest, I taught he was decent/good defender similar to Smalling, but never world class. I was even glad that City might be after him.

For some strange reason, that perspective has changed and I feel that he will become a top defender at United. Maybe because he is being supported by better players, but regardless his addition has given us the strongest “defensive” unit in the league.
I didn't think he was worth that much or was world class. But I've been a fan of him since he was at Hull and he's only gotten better since. Super happy we have him.

Feels like the Lukaku thread when we signed him

80 mil.. Hmm say he stays 6 years. Thats about 17mil per year for a good CB. We are united and sponsors pay us tonnes and we generate tonnes and we always charged differently. Get behind the lad.

You forget his wages and bonus and signing on fees etc, which is expected to be another 12m a year at the very least, and that will be close to 30m per year in our total investment on Maguire for the next 5 or 6 years.

I think the onus is on Shaw now to really prove himself this year, he’s a good full back but if he steps it up a notch it’d be the difference between a good back 4 and a great one. If he gets injured though we’re back to Young

This is a huge season for Shaw.

If he can somehow recapture that form before the leg break, we have a very exciting backline which is something that hasn’t been said for quite some time.

If he doesn’t, I can see the club being on the lookout for a new LB to sign next summer.

80M 85m figures bandied around.
Can any journos agree about anything?!

This signing is massive.

His strengths align perfectly to our weaknesses.

I said a couple of months ago that I think the cafs assessment of Maguire is as bad as the caf has ever judged a player before. He's the real deal. He's absolutely mint.

We need midfielder, then we can become optimistic again.

I was also a big fan of his during Hull. He made some incredible forward runs, was a formidable force in the air and was good with the ball in his feet. Then he went to leceister and my opinion of him wasn’t as high anymore :|. Can’t explain why, but for me he caught my eye at Hull more so than he did at leceister.

Did we pay too much? Yes, oh well life goes on. At least he actually wants the move and play for United, that's the main thing about this deal. We've paid the fee so let's just move on.

I saw someone say that the fee is justified by spending £50m on Maguire and £35m on not seeing Smalling and Jones start for us again

I really like our back four. Probably two of the best one on one full backs in the world and both comfortable on the ball. Maguire brings leadership, calmness and aerial domination and Lindelof showed he was a consistent performer who will be even more comfortable on the right side of central defence.

Then of course we have the best shot stopper in the world and a top 3 keeper between the sticks.

Yes, we overpaid by about 30m.

But that 30m could be the difference between getting CL and not, between keeping Pogba or not, and between Sancho signing for us or going to Spurs or Chelsea.

Agreed, similar with some of their assesments of Luke Shaw.

Happy that we should have a settled backline with Shaw, Lindelof, Maguire and AWB.

How do people think he will do with Lindelof as a partner?

Also the fee is crazy but I'm glad we have this sorted. He is only 26 so his best days are ahead of him plus he knows the league and has performed consistently

Seems it won't work on paper, both are slow and ball playing defender, we need someone quicker and tougher to partner them, but who knows.

It will be the best back 4 we'll have had in 6+ years, and young enough to have us sorted for the next 4 or 5 too. Solid signing. The price is what it is, prefer to see it being spent than in the pockets of the Glazers.

Maguire could step up, sure, but VVD already had basically every attribute you could want from a top center back. Great in the air, great positioning, composed on the ball, great passer, quick etc. etc. so it was always likely he would make the step up. Maguire lacks some of those attributes, especially pace, so it's not remotely as close to being as sure a thing as VVD was.

Look, he might be as good as VVD, time will tell, but I'd be amazed if he was.

You're severely underestimating maguire here, apart from pace which he does lack, he does have all those attributes you listed, he’s a threat in the air both in defence and attacking, he’s very composed on the ball and a great passer.

Virgil was good at Southampton but not amazing and nobody could’ve predicted he’d step up like he did. I think we have a gem in maguire too that has the attributes to match him.

5 million up front to Leicester, then balance on the last day of his contract. Hopefully we sign him to a 4 or 5 yr deal.

Not the last piece of the jigsaw by any means but certainly a key piece. Should be a bit of a game changer for us.

Are any of City's CB's particularly fast? Pique and Puyol did fine together. While Rio was decently fast, he would rarely sprint at full speed while Vidic was never the fastest. Defending shouldn't be about pace. It is so much more about communication and ability to read the game. But I do think that Ole will go with Jones and Maguire as his first choice to start the season.

Lindelof is not slow - he's not Varane but he's probably as quick as Ramos/Laporte so I don't know why people keep acting as if we have some slow backline -especially with AWB and Shaw either side of them and both being great defensively

Got a feeling he will be a fan favourite.

People are raising their eyebrows (like they did with the VVD deal) but Maguire and Wan Bissaka are a massive upgrade to our defence when compared to Young and Jones.

feck the fee I don’t care if he cost £100m, let the Glazers spend some cash.

Imo, he has 1 season left to prove himself.

We still need another option at left back...

OK so this is done along with AWB. Neither have come cheap but hopefully this is us sorted out for six or seven years.

Future transfer windows need to be all about bringing in one or two to raise the quality of the first x1 and shipping out the dead wood.

He’s an upgrade, not convinced it’s a big one though based on what i’ve seen. If he’s judged by his price tag or against VVD then I think it will be a huge let down, expectations have to be lower and fee has to just be glossed over as it’s about 20-30m too much.

Interesting to see how him and Lindelof work as a partnership, there’s going to be a real lack of pace at CB and CM so might take some time to get balance right. Hopefully we sell one or two of our other cb’s now.

I am not sure comparing Barca and City with our team will give us an accurate picture. Afterall we rarely dominate with over 70% possession these days...

Only mind boggling thing is surely we could have got him for that price, or even a touch less, before we went on tour if it wasn't for Ed's inability to multitask (or appoint a DoF type)?
