Harry Maguire | Signed

But it creates a bad environment around the club, it puts immense amount of pressure on both the squad and the coaching staff and Ole has enough of that on him already.

We've seen how gullible a big portion of our fanbase is. Considering the toxicity it has reached, I have no doubt that things will turn ugly very soon if we get Maguire for the quoted fees and he doesn't have an almost immediate Van Dijk effect on our team.
It'll turn ugly when we start with Jones and Lindelof as our centre backs and Jones gets injured for 4 months 10min into the first game, or Smalling gives away 3 penalties in the first game due to his constant pulling of shirts at corners combined with VAR.

Move on.

Van Dijk signing helped out Liverpool immensely because their attack and midfield was already fixed.

We can fix the midfield and attack this season and sign a better CB next season, we will be fine with Smalling, Lindelof, Jones, Tuanzebe, Rojo and Bailly for this season.

What makes you think they're be a better CB next season? The same names we wanted last summer are the same names this year. What makes you think next summer will be any different?

I'd rather give Tuanzebe a chance than spend almost a £100 million on fecking Maguire. There is definitely less potential negatives on that if it fails.

You can't really blame the supporters. A RB from Palace, the runner from the championship and a possible swap between two underperforming players (Lukaku and Dybala) is an underwhelming transfer window indeed, especially considering the level of rebuild we need to do. Meanwhile we haven't yet filled the DOF role + we haven't got rid of any deadwood. That stinks of incompetence. We keep talking about us being the biggest club in the world. Shouldn't we act like one in the transfer market as well?
Best RB in the league and one of the most talented attacking players in world football. That's very decent actually.

Dunno what to think. This is ridiculous.
That's what happens when we delay the deals.

We slept on this deal and have no options now. At the end we will overpay for him.

people act like vvd to liverpool is the only time any team has ever bought a centre back.

he is a top 5 cb in the league but he may not fit our style, we generate money so that we can comfortably spend 150m + every summer. It will mean we can't strengthen other positions and we have to negotiate on every deal and not just pay any demands. Judge each situation on its merits - opportunity cost, fit, impact on future negotiations with premiership teams etc. 'absolute' cost is close to irrelevant

What’s this that i’m hearing on Leicester haven’t included him in their squad numbers for the new season?
He has a squad number, not sure who is saying he doesn't have one.

The Sun ran a ludicrous article yesterday about he he’d been omitted from a video on our Twitter page announcing some of the squad numbers, which was taken from footage captured at the Media day on Monday when Maguire will “ill”. He’s still our no. 15.

To be honest 99% of football transfers are clubs paying well over any market value for a player . But then until Man City came on the scene with their Arab money the transfer market wasn't to bad . City and PSG have completely fecked the market and the result is bang average players going for 20 30 million so anyone with a bit of quality about them are north of 60 or 70

I heard Napoli are in for him on a loan. I think the Bale move to China breaking down is beneficial to us because if that happened, I would have seen Real knocking on our door harder.

I feel Real are playing a dirty game here, wait for our transfer window to close and tell Pogba to start acting up.

They were but I think Real want to sell James rather than loan him out again. Just get him off the wage bill completely. Atletico want him but Perez doesn’t want to sell to a league rival. Of course it was beneficial to us that Bale’s move to China fell through. He’s reportedly on 600K.

I will not be surprised if there was some truth in that 2nd paragraph you have mentioned. Real are the sort of club that would do something like that.

Will see what happens mate.

You guys think this is happening?
I think it will eventually. The talk about the fees is guessing. Sky reported last night they wanted £80m and are now saying £85m. It's just guess work because it's being dragged out, and I imagine that it's just a matter of time.

Pogba scored 17 and assisted loads didn't he? Bit harsh throwing him in with sanchez who probably didn't even start 17 games. Or contribute more than one goal?

Yes, it is. Probably outright wrong when you point out bare facts like that. I have got on the anti-Pogs bandwagon & am a whopper, I think, :(.

Let's say as much as possible from Pogba then. And just something/anything from the other one.

This will happen. Brighton are signing Webster right? Which means Duffy goes to Leicester and Maguire to Utd.

I know that Ole really wants Maguire, but Leicester are not half milking it. 5million more now.

Those reports are probably not true. I think it's stuck with brigton trying to sign their defender first before they sell dunk to Leicester followed by this deal.

4 out of that 6 dont fill me with confidence with their injury records.

I also think this will happen. My hope is Brighton spending 25m on a CB, which would lead to Dunk to Leicester for double that and Maguire to us for double Dunk's fee. Some patience folks, Leicester dont want to be seen as a selling club and make things hard at the moment, but i think they want someone in before selling.

He scored 8 goals in 6 matches last season which wasnt from the spot. He played 47 matches.

1x Fulham
2x Bournemouth
2x Huddersfield
1x Everton
1x Young Boys
1x Chelsea in the FA cup

And his penalty record isnt great either. Took 11. Missed 3. Scored 8.

Miles better than Sanchez.. but I have heard people throw the number of goals he scored to suggest he was good last season.. He wasnt. Stat padding at its finest.

Anyway.. back to Maguire talk.

Whereas when Van Nistelrooy scored his goals, all 40 a season were wonder strikes from 47 yards against the top 4

While @prateik is a bit correct to say Pogba's stats show a bit of a romantic version of his season, I certainly don't think he's the biggest problem in any area of our team.

Sanchez had an absolutely miserable season.
Lukaku had a poor second season. Rashford had a strong spell, but very much the exception, and Martial was only good in tiny patches. I'd argue with anyone that says any of those out performed Pogba - yet people put loads of grief at his door.

Regarding the rumours of Dunk to Leicester, it has been mentioned this afternoon that Dunk won’t be leaving Brighton even if they sign Webster, as their manager is wanting to use 3 at the back

Brighton are doing a Leicester now. Soon they will say it’s 60m+10 bonuses for Dunk

Maguire must be regretting signing that new contract with Leicester now.

It was idiocy.
But then if someone offered to massively mash your wage up, for staying in your current job, you'd probably do the same.

These players gamble that a buying club will be able to work it out later.

They're not going to say
"yeah we're just waiting for Leicester to snap their fingers and we'll bend" are they!

Agree with that.
Silly money
Not the point is it the question is

Risk v reward on maguire coming in
Against
Risk v reward for using Tuanzebe.

We are gambling on a young lad who hasn’t played a full season at Pl, not to get injured and step up with complete consistency.

If we fail to get 4th we are screwed pretty much with sponsors and getting players next year.

Maybe Leicester will sign Balogun from Brighton?

BHA have sent three centre-backs out on loan to second tier sides.

Look this is a Maguire thread and we derailed it enough. However let me say one last thing. If we think we're going to stop the rot with just signing AWB and Dybala then think again.

Leicester are doing us a favor by overvaluing Maguire.

Maguire will not make us a contender. In 2-3 years he'll be a squad/rotation player like Phil Jones. Best to save the money for next year.
