You paid £50m for a right back from Palace without a cap. What De Ligt cost has nothing to do with anything, they aren't premier league clubs, Ajax are a selling club happy to take the money and oh he's not English.

"Leicester are taking the piss out of us" you do realise he's our player and we're under no obligation to just accept the first bid that comes in before EireRed_GS thinks we should be happy with it.

We are owned by billionaires with ambitions of being a top 6 club, I think people need to get their heads around us not being a club like Burnley happy to just take profit with no ambition.

Jesus chill out man! i agree with you.

The more frustrating thing for me is that fact we have incompetent negotiators that seemingly fold to demands in every talks. But Maguire aint worth the money being quoted. no way! Yes, you's don't have to sell, but we shouldn't allow ourselves to be mugged off either.

And yes you have owners who have ambition. Im sure the majority of people on here envy that. Because i do, i wish we did. Ours are just looking at the bottom line, to see which profits there are.

Yeah and that's why I specifically said defender. Because his contribution was a lot to do with his attacking as well.
And Maguire's contribution was a lot to do with what he does with the ball, not his actual defending.

£70m was more than reasonable & and also it’s respectful towards Leicester. I don’t see it as bullying. If there is anything silly is Leicester’s demand fees to be above van Dijk.
Why should Leicester factor in how much van Dijk cost? They don't want to sell, they don't need to sell, they've named the price they'd be willing to sell for. It's up to us whether we meet it or not.

MUFC is followed by a lot of entitled fans. Most don’t remember pre Fergie and think they have the right to steamroll everybody to the top.

It will take time but eventually people will realize the landscape has totally changed and those days are gone.

Some fans are in for a bad few years if they can’t get their heads around it. Either that or they will move on.

Glad there are some sensible people about, some of the posts on here have been bewildering.

LCFC fan here.

What I dont like about this transfer saga is every single day media are reporting something new, either they are just spinning from nothing or someone from man utd keeps pushing them to do it, I have never seen this kind of relentless activity media before for a player leaving our club. If Man utd are pushing for daily harassment by the media then its lowest of the low.

Also If these rumours are led to be believed then.

Maguire is effectively been held prisoner yet hasnt even made a transfer request.

A deal is closed to been made yet our manager has confirmed our valuation hasnt even been met.

Man utd only have one CB target and cannot even meet the valuation for him?

It is ok for Man utd to ask for large money for pogba but not ok for LCFC to do the same for Maguire.

I will be annoyed if you suddenly meet the valuation and we sell him at last minute, why wait weeks to meet the valuation, if you not prepared to meet the valuation why not move on to a new target? its as if you think we will suddenly flip for no reason.

Is this how all your transfers play out?

Because van dijk is better than Maguire. The club & manager are aware that Maguire wants to leave. If the club decides to put £80m for the price, the player himself will find it is impossible to join a new club with such a silly asking price like that.

£70m is massive enough for a centre back. We have made an enough respectful bid.

It's pretty much how any transfer saga plays out tbh.

It's weird how people think about footballers so differently from real jobs.

Imagine a competitor offered you a great salary bump, it's a more prestigious company and you were kind of looking for a change, but your current employer had the legal right to stop you moving. Madness.

We could sign Alderweireld AND Milenkovic for less money.

For me the key is a transfer is a negotiation. So if LCFC believe Maguire should be the most expensive defender in history that is a position, United don't agree, so some kind of compromise should be met.

Leicester (and all selling teams, including us) appear to at least publicly take the line that they hold all the cards, which is simply not true. Players move, it's reality. Being obstinate to the point of leaving yourself no time to replace players doesn't help either side, and is more about some weird sense of pride about tough negotiating than doing what is best for the club.

The reason Maguire seems to be quietly pushing for a move is:-

1. This might be his shot to get better wages and move to bigger club. He will be 27 next year and who knows what kind of season he will have.
2. His fee will not be as high next year.

Southampton were happy to sell we aren't, its that simple

Kind of. He often gets early team news before games.

He's definitely a wee Brendan type of player so I can see there being a lot of truth in that, plus it would still leave with them extra money if they sell us Maguire

Imagine a competitor offered you a great salary bump, it's a more prestigious company and you were kind of looking for a change, but your current employer had the legal right to stop you moving. Madness.

Yet on the other hand, footballers sign contracts that net them absurd sums of money in consideration for x number of years of service to a club. If footballers really wanted to have the freedom to move employers, they'd start using NBA tactics - i.e. signing 1 or 2 year deals and constantly being on the cusp of free agency. The downside of short-term deals is that you aren't financially protected if you suffer career-threatening (or ending) injury, but the upside is that you constantly hold all the cards and, if you are good enough, can dictate your future at all times.

They're well within the right to take the piss out of us to be honest. They don't want to sell him, Maguire isn't kicking up a fuss and they don't really need the money.

Agree 100%, there are other CB's in the world that we could buy. If we don't want to meet their valuation we need to move onto our next choice. Leicester are fully entitled to price him like they have and keep him if they want.
The way we are acting it's like there is no other player even close to him in terms of ability that we could buy, it's bizarre! He's not that amazing that we need to obsess over him, you'd swear he was the next Beckenbauer.

Thats an odd way of thinking, so if you think a shop charges too much for a loaf of bread they should compromise the price instead of you shopping somewhere cheaper for your bread?

If you cannot meet the valuation buy a cheaper defender, its simple.

Of course we hold the cards he is an asset we own under contract.

Now whether its best for our club is of course not known at this point, but on a pure commercial transaction basis we have no obligation to lower our price.

100% agree. We are doing that with Lukaku, and Pogba. The reason no one has come in for him, the asking price is alot. This is because they both have 2 years on their contract. Maguire has 4, so either pay the asking price, or move on.

Watch how we accept a lower fee for Lukaku.. shows how crap we are at negotiating, that is why clubs take the piss.

It's bizarre you don't understand they are totally different situations.

Generally in a normal company you sign the equivalent of a rolling contract. There will be a notice period. It could be a week for some casual kid, or a year for a top boss.
The top guys can't just leave. They have to serve notice, gardening leave, or be fought for in court.

Footballers sign long term contracts for years.
They decide to do that.
They don't have notice as such.

They are totally different scenarios.

What was obviously wrong was the situation pre bosman. A player's contract could end but they still were trapped by the club.

Maguire fecked off from Sheff Utd and Hull the minute he got a better offer.

Leicester knew this when they signed him. He was always going to want to leave if a better offer came along.

It's all about maximising the fee and having a replacement lined up for them at this stage.

If we sign a replacement CB I doubt it will be from a prem club, Rodgers has already said he doesn't see enough value in that market

I don’t get this argument

1. De Ligt was not interested in joining us
2. De Ligt plays for a club in an inferior league
3. There might be some kind of gentleman’s agreement that he was to get his transfer this window
4. We are buying an English player with English tax
5. We are buying him from a club that finished not far behind us in the league

Stop comparing De Ligt with this transfer. The context is totally different.

Totally agree that argument is just dumb.
