Yup, it was so obvious too. Kept praying all summer that it wouldn't go through, but here we are. We got a worse 'Arry without getting rid of the original bad 'Arry.

Annoying how obvious these things are to some of us. But unfortunately not the club.

I honestly thought that this was his extended year. I really hope we are not seeing him here next season. Ineos has been as bad as Woodward with their footballing decisions so far.
 
Go back to winning every duel with confidence and demand your space. This was played with red panties on. Just looks ridiculous trying to get cheap freekicks and fouls by diving
 
That second goal doesn't happen with a quicker defender to get back into position. He struggles so badly at getting back when he's higher up the pitch. You see it time and time again. All three of the centre backs were dreadful so he's hardly alone today.
 
His diving was almost as embarrassing as his attempts to get back to stop their second goal.
 
He's been terrible for a while and I'm not sure why Amorim persists with him whilst Yoro is on the bench. It feels like with every goal we concede Maguire contributes to it in one way or another by being a bit of a dope.
 
At this point with him it's not a question of perfomances from daily basis, it's about what he brings to the table in characteristics since day one, the big sum paid for him and the concept of trying to build a defensive line around him for years to come.
If it didn't worked for many reasons time ago, to nowadays try it again with the lad being way older it does not look like the wisest choice.

Won't be long before Yoro takes over and we use De Ligt in the middle. This might have been the game to finally show him up as being not fit for purpose.
 
Beto really had his number today. That was vintage bad Maguire. Hopefully an isolated performance, but it’s clear that you can’t carry two cumbersome CBs with De Ligt. It’s got to be one or the other, especially coupled with this idiotic keeper.
 
He really looked overwhelmed in the center of that defense. If i recall, he played really well as a left sided CB for england’s back 3. Why not play him as such with de ligt in the center?

I hope so. De Ligt isn't the most agile but next to Maguire he's a prime Ferdinand, so you'd think him, Mazaroui and Yoro could be really aggressive and front foot defenders. Saying that we'd probably get tonked 5-0 if we try it.
 
That's the worst I've seen Maguire play in a long time, and there haven't really been any standout good performances to mitigate one like that. Awful.

That's not true. He's been one of the better players under Amorim. But today, he was very, very bad.
 
Awful. Absolutely dogshit. Slow, poor reactions, lacking desire. Sick of him, never been good enough and sick of people bigging him up when he has a decent game every now and again. He would have been fired out a cannon at any serious club.

Well I can’t see De Ligt being anywhere near as lumbering as Maguire. In fact Lother Matthaus was furious when Bayern sold him to us, as he claimed he was one of their better players!
 
Has to be benched for the next game, even in a back 3 he’s still not good enough week in week out.
 
Problem - the whole backline is making mistakes and when Maguire is panicking, he is probably the worst player on the pitch.

Can't believe we still need a defender after spending on Yoro and De Ligt last year.
 
Been noticing for a while just how passive he is. The whole team is but still it stands out with him. He's always a step behind the players around him and sits off waiting for somebody else to do his job. Today it cost us two goals.

He's very good in a back line that sits deep and reacts to attackers but he's out of his depth trying to play any kind of progressive football.

The problem is that this is exactly what suits him and MDL. Other than that, both just aren't good enough. We better hope Yoro really develops and Martinez somehow regains fitness for more than 10 games.
 
Doesn’t fancy jumping does he?

He’s a good lad but this should have been his last season. Can we really not find a CB whose good at heading and athletic on the cheap?

Think one of the reason he plays is that he is our best defender for long passing without Martinez.

Second goal In particular, de ligt gets caught ridiculously high up the pitch, Maguire goes from trying to cover the entire left side of our half, to charging backwards into a one one situation in the centre of the box and than trying to head a ball out from under our own bar from a standing position. Literally a one man band, all while Maz overcommitted, de ligt was nowhere, Onana made a decent save than refused to take command and Dalot, ugarte and Casemerio slowly jogged back watching the game rather than playing it.

Granted though is wasn't a particularly good performance either.

Hardly disastrous? He didn’t clear the cross and then the header along with Onana for one goal and again for the second. Both led to goals. If that isn’t disastrous in a footballing context I don’t know what is

He's going to be a year older and looks like he is being found out in the back 3. There has to be better options than just keeping him on 200k for another year.
 
Think Maguire has probably been our best CB over the last 18 months, and was pleased we extended him. He's been fecking shit since we did though.
