He doesn't react on DeGea save at all with the ball still in play, then goes to close Sheffield player on the 1st post leaving clean header for McGoldrick (Williams can't close that on time imo)... God knows what are both Lindelof and Jones doing tbf

Don't know, he had question marks about his actual defending and they still remain. Will need a WC defender alongside to make him look better and get the most out of him. Which would mean we would need to buy big at CB (again). A far more settled team or the one more on the front foot would also certainly help.

I still like him, think he has some good qualities, but 80 million was insane.

From a good purchase to a horrible one. I mean no middle ground here. Sure, not 80m worthy but would look better if the team would look generally better and more balansed.

Well said, we need to be looking at why we don’t defend well as a team.
The last goal was on him because he did not get tight with his man. Let him receive the ball, tee it up, and volley that sucker home completely unchallenged

I watched it again, whatever body part he used, it was inexcusable he had so much time to do it

I really don’t know how we managed to pay £80 million for him. The reason why he is our captain is because we spent so much on him.

I thought he was not that bad individually. Kind of surprised to see people reaction here.

The whole problem today was that our flanks were not covered like usual with Rashford and James and we had no specialist DM there which made the whole defending pretty shaky.

I was against buying him and every game is another proof to me that we payed 80mil for only solid defender. I don't see difference between him and Smalling at all( except ball playing ability)
They really are nothing alike except for the height and aerial ability. Otherwise they are almost extreme opposites. Everything Maguire is good at, Smalling is weak. And everything Maguire is weak at is what Smalling is good at.

There's a reason many of us thought that the two together would probably end up being our best partnership. They both have their weaknesses but at least they cover for each other. Instead we have Maguire and Lindelof who mostly have the same weaknesses (except for aerial ability of course).

Right now he doesn't deserve his place over Tuanzebe imo

People are giving Lindelof a lot of shit this season but for me Maguire has had been more obviously suspect than Lindelof has. Obviously never going to be dropped given the financial outlay on him though

Nobody expected Maguire to look like an £80m player because he simply isn't one. There are very few defenders on the planet worth that amount of money and Harry Maguire is certainly not one of them. But so far, he's not even looking like a 40m defender to me. I was expecting him to be a sure-fire hit, who would add calmness and authority to our backline but I'm not seeing those things so far. He does not look like the leader we thought we were getting, at all, so far. Very concerning.

Has put on some really shite performances this season, but gets away with it because he's a nice guy and a new signing. 80m worth of average. Leicester are laughing their arses off.

Also, I am not sure how he was appointed captain after playing 10 games for United? He seems to be a bit of a leader, but I doubt that he's won his teammates' respect in the few games he played for the club. It seems like a retarded decision that only creates more discontent in a squad that is already lacking in motivation.

Not good today like the rest of our defenders. He doesn't seem to improve anything around him either and his low pace gets exposed too much.

He's a solid, upper-midtable PL player who you'd be happy to have as a squad player in a top team if he came through your academy or if you could get him for a good price. Instead, he's one of the most expensive transfers in the history of the sport playing for one of the highest-profile clubs in the world, and he's never, ever going to live up to that billing.

It's Lukaku all over again.

The most expensive defender in football? I don’t see it. I can name 10 defender more valuable. However, it is just his first season. I expect more from him later and he will play a big role in the future...I think.

So have we improved defensively with the £130 million signings? Have we feck. I'm fuming at this the most, we could have strengthened the midfield instead.

I was against paying so much money in the summer, but people were adamant it was going to be worth it.

For people fuming here, please bare in mind that our options prior to Maguire were Jones (truly terrible), Smalling (out of the club) and Bailly/Rojo - the most erratic defenders you'll see.

He was poor today, but he's been sturdy overall since joining, which is no mean feat given the size of the step up and task.

It bothers me that’s he’s been handing the captaincy when he’s barely been at the club a few months and he’s been shit for most of it. Things like that should really be earned by at least some longevity.

I don't get that either. Armband has become meaningless in this club. First Ashley Young then to a new player who has just joined and hasn't been that great because the manager likes him.

Wasn't a fan of his signing in the summer, he's as mobile as an oil tanker and his passing is actually trash. Leicester sure saw us coming alright.

If it was up to me, i would never have signed the overpriced swell head.

That says a lot about the rest of our players and the leadership and balls available in the team. It's scary!

He doesn't even seem like the leader type, he is a big old white english defender like Bruce so he must be a leader. It's a fairy tale from the past, we've been down this road before. Get him a quick partner to cover up for his weaknesses defensively, or you might not even bother and just ship him out and try again.

It's crazy to think about it. Only United will pay 80m for a defender that needs other players to be bought for him to play well. Oh wait, we did the same with Pogba eh?

Maguire is a decent CB nothing more. Never an £80m player.

As for Wan Bissaka......he gets a nose bleed when he gets the ball. He can defend but for £50m you need more than that.

Jury still out on both for me. Only Dan James has been a success.

Do it.

Are people actually blaming Harry for the 3rd goal? Maguire was covering the other guy next to McBurnie and the ball went to latter. Not sure what different the defender could do here.

It actually Brandon Williams ball watching and not marking his man. There are lots of posters on here desperate for him to fail sadly.

To be honest it was kinda of unlucky he didn't get the block in on the shot, however I think Maguire should of been on McBurnie and Williams should of been on the guy that Maguire is on. Otherwise as you can see McBurnie is left open and Williams is essentially just standing there marking no one.

Why would Maguire be marking the player furthest left in the play?

Maguire was always going to get shit at some point because so many thought he was overpriced so expecting people to watch and realise that no, that wasn't his fecking man is too much to ask.

TBH in the dying seconds of the game its impossible to make these rational decisions when ball is coming at you. If Brandon had covered the other guy, the goal would have likely been prevented.

Clueless post. You want Maguire to be stood at LB marking a man?

Maguire would look like the worlds greatest player if he was in Serie A. Conversely, put Smalling in this United side and he’d be exposed every single game.
We've seen Smalling in this United and he wasn't exposed every single time.
There is a decent player in Maguire but he obviously wasn't as good as the expectation a fee of that size would generate. We had more pressing concerns than splashing out that ridiculous amount on him.

True.

Looking at the replay, ideally McBurnie was Williams' man. But you can argue they should of rotated and Maguire should of gone on McBurnie realising he was open, but that is split second decisions that he tried to do but wasn't quick enough at it.
But yeah Williams should have been on McBurnie instead.
