Seems that way.
It's only a matter of time before they turn on AWB - "good defender but can't cross" "not fit to lace TAA's boots" "for 50 million i'd expect much more".

Bloody joke if you ask me

AWB is 5 years younger and playing better than Maguire

IS the Caf turning on Maguire now? - oh goody.

Fecks sake, It’s minor criticism of an 80 million defender. It doesn’t have to be either he’s amazing and can’t be criticised or he’s absolutely shite.

His performances have absolutely dropped off and whilst he’s not been anywhere near awful I think he needs a rest. Did some decent work last night but a few moments that were a bit iffy. I think It’s fair to say he's not performing at his absolute best.

I like that he gave a talking-to to Fred when the Brazilian stupidly gave a pass away. Don’t know whether the Partizan striker baited him into doing that or he just blindly played the pass. Good on Maguire to encourage Fred’s head to not drop, another one of Maguire’s leadership qualities i suppose

If there's someone who will not break in this team it's the Slab.

Blind faith perhaps, but at the very moment, in the most frustrating rebuild he was needed like no one before. If our midfield, wings and attack could provide what required from them, we would never even had discussion about Harry.

The same Sadiq who didn't get past him once and didn't get a single shot off?

Maguire just looks a little frazzled at the moment. He could do with a week off.

Yes, Sadiq made him work hard and Maguire was clearly uncomfortable with him. Was the same back in Belgrade.

I'm not saying he's shit or turning on him. Sadiq's pace and trickery clearly were an issue for Maguire. Not as bad as say Vidic versus Torres but as I said earlier, Harry looked a lot more composed after Sadiq was substituted. He'll no doubt be happy to see the back of him.

There are two different sides in Maguire's case. One is people who were against the signing with point of saying he was never good enough defensively due to lack of pace & the other one is people who had no issue with the signing because he's better than what we had. The people who were against the signing is right now trying so hard to criticise him for every small mistake he's making even when he doesn't make the mistake they will still blame him.

I thought he's done very well so far, I don't know what game you were watching but I think he has brought in more composure in our defense, more forward passes from the back that can penetrate opposition midfield & statistically we had one of the lowest expected goal’s against. He's a massive upgrade of Lindelof which someone I never understand why we signed him in the first place, should have signed Maguire from Hull instead. To me once Tuanzebe is back he should be paired with Maguire not Lindelof and I think it will compliment Maguire's weakness, while Lindelof has everything of Maguire's weakness.

I personally really rate Maguire, he’s composed, makes good tackles, has great positioning and is a calming influence. Oh and he can actually consistently pass a ball.

I accept he’s judged differently as he cost so much but both him AWB are in my opinion superb signings.

Last season every time the opponent had the ball in our half I thought they’d score. I now feel our defence is our strongest area and competitive with anyone in the league. It’s the midfield I now feel is our weakest area.

We know that Lindelof has a mistake in him at least once or twice again and the Young has the positional sense of a schoolboy. On Thursday Maguire and the rest of the defence had to keep moving out of position whilst young was having tea with the other teams keeper.

If Shaw wasn’t injured all the time our defence would be superb.

If Shaw wasn’t injured all the time our defence would be superb.
Shaw has played in less than half our league games 4 of 5 full seasons here; he is not the difference between of defence being passable as it has been & superb.

The vast overestimation of Shaw is a huge reason why we’re in the mess we are. His horrendous positioning cost us vital points at the end of last season & attacks down the left end with a terrible piece of decision making by him as much as they do Ashley Young.

Not buying an LB & hoping for Shaw to finally prove his fitness is one of the inept decisions no one pays proper attention to; even if you believe his a top player we know he’ll miss games so should have an alternative; he can easily be bettered.

As for Maguire, he has been underwhelming £80mil or not. He’s proven at Leicester he can be good on the ball but has given away some terrible passes; doing so on Thursday aswell.

The defence isn’t fixed or anywhere near it; Shaw’s absence isn’t the reason Josh King scores a goal a good defence shouldn’t concede last weekend.

Our goals conceded is 11, one more than city and two more than Liverpool.

Our defence is up there, it is our lack of goals that is costing us.

If Liverpool or Man City concede they go up the pitch creating chance after chance and score 3.

How many goals did we concede in 11 premier league games last season.

I don’t care what anyone says we are a lot more solid and if/when we sort the attacking the defence will be under less pressure.

I agree. Especially considering how bad our defence was last year and that we don’t seem to have a certain partner for Maguire. Compare that with him playing with the same defence every game last year. that’s before you even start looking at the midfield he’s playing with, both going forward and defensively.

There’s always going to be times when defenders get beat, or mis place a pass, even VVD has been made to look stupid a few times this year.

What is unforgivable, is players being stood around making zero runs or being able to pass the ball forward in midfield. It’s damaging us way more than the defence.

Welcome to Man Utd. The twilight zone where players come to the club and turn to shite. It's amazing that other managers make players better, we historically make them worst and then blame the players. Harry didn't have pace before he came here but seemed to manage ok at Leicester?

To be fair, not many of us saw him as an £80,000,000 player. I think most of us would qui tree happily have taken £40,000,000. His value was inflated due to the World Cup; where he played in a back three.

I’m not sure he’s that slow, the issue you have is that he drives forward, leaving a hole in the defence. As a two, that hurts, it leaves gaps.

You may be better with a better holding player in front of him. We have N’Didi.

17 goals I think but we also need to acknowledge AWB and the fact that Matic doesn't start anymore.

Pretty much. Young playing RB behind Mata RW was the cause of plenty of goals early last season

Also fair to mention that both City and Pool are having one of there poorer defensive seasons

He was a £60m player at most for me. The problem was he was the best available in England. So we looked at no alternatives because his fans argued we must get someone with PL experience. When the short-list only has 1 player on it, you'll pay way over the odds.

Don't get it. When did what you pay for a player amount to what he's worth in reality? If you want to buy anything that's not for sale, you have to pay what the seller think they are worth not necessarily the true value. It's clear, the only way we could buy him was to break the record for a CB. If that record was 50m, we would have paid £51m and not 80m.....

Or you can shop elsewhere, that is how a marketplace works.

Irrespective of the fee though we’ll just have to see how he does. So far to me the biggest improvement to the defence has been AWB.

Agree.

When the defence wasn’t conceding many goals with Smalling in the team it wasn’t good enough because Smalling wasn’t launching attacks apparently. We needed a ‘ball playing’ centre back. Maguire was that player apparently. Now that doesn’t seem to matter so much anymore.

He's making mistakes we all thought were in him , and yes we overpaid but broadly he's still a stable presence for us who adds much to our game. Im not fussed.

The fact that he's a calming influence at the back is quite important for us, especially vs the panic-stricken mannerisms of Jones, Smalling, Bailly, etc. If he had a no-nonsense enforcer beside him, similar to the role Rojo played vs Partizan, that would be a complete partnership IMO.

That said, I don't think he was worth 80M, but nothing we can do about that now.

Easier to look good in a Leicester shirt when the level of expectation is different than playing for one of the biggest teams in the world. Also different when you are spending all your time playing counterattack football. Not sure why we bought a ball playing CB but play on the back foot with two DM in front of him.

Because we have a plan :p

On the ball playing side, I havent exactly been impressed but maybe its the way we play

They also concede more because they are attacking teams. They dont have fullbacks so far back helping the CBs

I think he has been an average signing so far. I think the vast majority of our defensive improvement has been due to Bissaka, who has already made as many tackles this season as Young made throughout the entirety of last season. Bissaka (47 tackles this season) has also almost reached the same number of tackles as Shaw, who was our top tackler last season with 55.

Bissaka is, again, positioned third in the total number of tackles made in the Premier League this season. Bissaka has made an enormous difference, which would inevitably have made the centre-backs' job easier. He can practically defend the right on his own.

In comparison, Maguire's stats have not been massively different to Smalling's stats. Maguire cost £80m. The improvement I have seen in central defence is minimal, especially when considering such a massive fee. You would expect far more for that kind of money. Defensively, he is no better than Smalling.

Maguire is better on the ball, but that is completely pointless when you haven't got any midfielders, aside from Pogba, who can actually pass.

He is a good player, but considering the massive fee, the neglect of the midfield in favour of him and that he is not a massive upgrade, I would say his signing has been an average one so far.

I was against Maguire signing because I thought the fee was ridiculous. I am not trying to criticise him but let's not pretend he has been great so far. He has been OK but made quite a few mistakes and certainly doesn't justify the fee. He is still probably our best defender (not much competition to be fair ) so I am fine with him, as long as we can get a good manager in he could be even better IMO.

I think some of the recent criticism of him has been harsh IMO, he didn't set the price we paid for him and we are running him into the ground.

I wonder how he feels about how well Leicester are doing . I know Utd are clearly the bigger club but with Leicester challenging for thier second title in a few years and certainly going to qualify for the champions league while we are nowhere close to achieving either .

It has to grate with you that you are missing out . Im sure none of the players who won the title previously would swap their medal to have played in the Utd team post Fergie

I honestly doubt he gives two shits and is just focused on making sure we win the next game.

He is human not a robot im sure he has some feeling on it .

Okay, well I'm sure his feeling is more along the lines of 'the season could be going better, but holy shit I'm actually playing for Man Utd after being in league one with Sheffield Utd, and getting relegated with Hull, not that long ago'

All jokes aside, Leicester are doing well this season, but their success has been compounded by how shit Arsenal, Tottenham and Utd have been. We're still a much bigger club and still the more likely to win trophies in the long term.

I'm sure, if anything, he feels happy for his former teammates and friends at the club. But I very much doubt he's crying into his cornflakes every morning, wishing he was back in the Midlands and having to help Maddison trim his chin beard every day after training.

He can help Maddison trim it next year with any luck

When Liverpool win tomorrow Leicester will be 8 points behind them. Its about as much a title challenge as United finishing 2nd under Jose was.

Unfair to talk about Maguire like this.

We literally loaned out our best defender just to replace him with another instead of partnering them up together.

Has to be one of the stupidest moves ever.

Leicester don't look affected at all with selling him. Like it was very easy for them to replace him. It's really weird, and maybe bad too.

Your logic is weird. What’s one player will do anything to the team? They have the same 10 out of 11 in their XI from last season since Rodgers took in charge, they barely getting injured this season. Unless what they lost is Vardy, it might be a different story.
