Badly needs a solid partner as the lindelof effect seems to be dragging him down with mistakes creeping in here and there. Can't wait to see how he does with Tuanzebe.

He is the best CB for sure but Wan Bissaka has clearly been the biggest contributing factor in the back line. Everything is shut down nicely on his side. I do think we look better organised defensively than we have been, but I'm not sure that is down to Maguire being a leader.

AWB is a good defender and is contributing to the defense but i don't think he's organizing it. DDG? I'm not sure about that. Only other newer member here is Maguire. He clearly looks to be having the effect.

We look more organized defensively because last season was a shit show and Ole had a summer preseason to try and sort it out

He’s been ok. Doesn’t look like a £80m player so far though. AWB and James have been the better summer signings for me.

Maguire should have fouled him once he got goal side of him. Glad it didn't cost us and I hope he learned from it. Other than that, solid performance today...

Eh, it was a mistake and not one that would expect too often from him, it was more something I'd expect of Lindelof.

My bigger worry defensively is in situations where our CBs have attackers run on them; 1) they tend to back of so much, letting the attacker get a head of steam 2) When they do engage them, they tend to get turned inside out too easily. Need for them to be better in that department.

It's a mistake doesn't mean it's his weakness like what Lindelof did against Palace. He could have done better, overall he's been very good for us.

Brings a lot to the team but has zero recovery pace. Needs a Bailly or Smalling type next to him in a high line.

He was at fault for the goal, he completely missed the sight of the ball and then was behind the striker. Still Bats had half of the pitch to cover and we had 2 CBs (lindelof and Rojo) ahead of striker. They just backed off instead of at least one trying to tackle.

It was collective failure with Maguire initiating it. Nothing to worry anyways, it's something that happens very rarely. 9/10 times Maguire wins the header.

There’s a reason he carries the armband 10 premier league games into the season for Manchester United. Colossus

Poor for the goal. Not sure how he is losing that duel. He never loses those. But if he wasn't winning it, he shouldn't have gone so tight to his man. Once he turned he was gone. Probably could've fouled him once he'd gone by.

Though Rojos effort to stop any kind of shot was non existent too, and if Maguire went tight, Lindelof should've been covering as well, so it's not 100% on Maguire. There was 3 players around their striker and they all reacted poorly.

Three slow players, ideally we'd have better balance in that regard.

When Lindelof missed that header early in the season, it was all fire towards him. I checked to see if there was any consistency on Harry and I read some posts like "it's OK, even Rio and Vidic made these errors"

There would be heaps more vitriol had we not won last night to be fair. Plus we've seen Lindelof be weak at headers quite a few times during his time at United which highlights a weakness that people are frustrated about. This is the first real big error we've seen from Maguire (unless I'm forgetting something) so I'm not surprised the reaction isn't as harsh.

It still amazes me that any PL defender doesn't have the wherewithal to know that you have to just take a yellow in that situation, 100% of the time. Seems to happen with us so much, you can see the goal happening nearly 10 seconds before they score. Where's Herrera when you need him?

This is the state of our fan group. But I guarantee you alot of the goal will still be blamed on Lindelof for not covering by posters on here.

I said it then, and will say it now a CB will miss the odd header, you cannot expect them to win 100% ariel duels.

It's not a knock on him it's a general gripe but it pisses me off no end that we spent a world record fee on perhaps the second most dangerous goal threat CB in the league and have yet to reap anything from it.

Maguire could easily score 5-6 a season for us yet we don't have anyone that can make this happen.

It's feels like we're not maximising our investment at all with Maguire.

He actually had more goals and assists than any other centre back in the PL in his seasons in the league before signing for us. He should have scored a couple of headers so far in fairness.

Yeah, our lack of quality of our delivery from set pieces have always been a running joke here on the Caf.

No but you must expect them to win most of their headers. It’s basic for a cb
That’s the difference between HM and VL.
The former wins most of his headers, the latter doesn’t

Agreed, you expect them to win majority of headers. Look at the size of Maguire compared to Lindelof.

On the contrary, Maguire gets beaten on the ground easier than Lindelof, I have seen Maguire wrong footed on more than 3 occasions this season.

What I am getting at is the criticism on Lindelof was over the top.

Seriously? Blaming other defender for his own mistake? I don't like the word "agenda" but..

Perhaps, but the mistakes he makes usually result either in a goal conceded or a massive chance.

I am however one of his most vocal critics from day 1. I just don’t see the basics there of a top class CB. For me, the 2nd CB spot needs upgraded

I understand but lets look at where Maguire has been caught out if we are using the same metric as judging Lindelof.
Vs West Ham Yarmalemko scored after cutting in and Maguire was caught on the wrong foot
Vs Chelsea Batshuay bullied him for the goal twice
Vs Partizan was put on the floor
Vs Norwich too

I am not saying he is a bad defender on the contrary, I think Maguire has been brilliant for us, but the criticism on Lindelof is a bit over the top.

I don't think he will be our long term CB because I personally think by the end of the season Tuanzebe will partner Maguire. Lindelof is a very good backup to them.

I would rate his season so far as 6/10. He has been good but hasn't been amazing, a few avoidable mistakes but I'm sure he will iron them out (hopefully :D). He lost out in the air yesterday which led to Chelsea's goal but majority of the times he wins the aerial battle. Yes, he is one of our more 'experienced' player but he is yet to hit his peak and as a CB, it's usually later in their careers. His first season here so willing to give him time.

Would have liked him to be more expressive though with his ability to bring the ball out from the back, isn't that one of the main reasons we forked out all that money on him? He seems to be playing it a bit too cautious at times.

IMO, I believe Tuanzebe - providing he develops into the player we want him to become, would be the ideal long-term partner for Maguire as he has the pace which Harry does not have. Lindelof is not the quickest either. So maybe playing Axel alongside Maguire may get the best out of them both?

Im surprised the Maguire fans on here haven'tblamed Rio ior Vidic yet for the goal as they have tried to blame everyone else .

Never seen as many weak excuses . This is why i felt he was a huge wate of money and will make these errors .

He is just far to slow and when he is caught out of position which has happened time and time again it is game over .

80 million for this was a total joke

The difference for me is that HM is proven st this level, Lindelöf not really. He’s had several years now and not really looked good enough consistently. I also think AT will be maguires partner when he’s fit. VL as backup

VL is part of the setup that is one of the best defences in the league.

The day we start scoring goals, you will see a difference in the defence too.

This team needs a few more very good results, a few clean sheets and you will see when they play with arrogance VL and HM will look class.

When is Axel back? the number of games we have VL and Axel will play 30 games each anyway.

OK he was culpable last night but Lindelof and Rojo hardly covered themselves in glory either, but other than that he was immense and we have a captain for years and years now.
Awesome signing IMHO

I like him and overall he seems to have a good mentality and a good effect on the squad, but he's been average at best this season.

Out of our 3 signings, I've been expecting the most from him, but AWB and James have been much better.

True, though Rojos fairly mobile tbf, and he's not chasing, he backs off and makes a half arsed attempt to block.

They were all too close and poorly positioned. 3 defenders just shouldn't be losing out there, regardless of pace. It's a downside of a back 3, especially a continually rotating one. I feel a pair will always have a better understanding of each other.

I think he gets away with a lot less criticism than he should because we don't want to believe we wasted 80 mill. That goal was shocking defending. Yeah you can miss a header but if you do you need to recover. He lost sight of the ball and when he realized it was behind him he was more in the way then helping. Being put on his arse what twice? 3 times?was comic as well. He's good but Im judging him at the level we signed him at which should be one of the best and for me he is a few levels off that at the moment. But I still think he can improve and we will see what he is really capable of

Seriously? Blaming other defender for his own mistake? I don't like the word "agenda" but..

Goal was almost all Maguire, but I would like to know why Rojo tried to get out of the way instead of blocking the shot. Did he just lose where he was relative to the goal and thought it was going wide?

When he signed i expected that it will be other way around. But Lindelof has zero credits and Harry has all credits. Lindelof makes first mistake in season; " give me Tuanzebe". Harry makes mistake; "yeah, he could have done better but where is Lindelof there?"

Harry Maguire is worlds most expensive defender, already a leader of this squad and personally i expect more of him than from any our defender.

Wait, did someone really just check and compare the response to Maguire's mistake to... Lindelof? On his third season with us and shown little signs of improvement on his weaknesses? I wasn't a big fan of breaking the record to sign Maguire, but the desperation here to defend Lindelof is amusing at times.

He improved the defence and i think he will also improve as a player. That being said, Forced to overpay for a good defender.

Maybe he could be compared to Cahill in the end. Cahill was a good English defender but he had a really good defender (Terry) next to him. Cahill had a good career as a Chelsea player and Maguire could also have a good Manchester United if he had a really good defender next to him. You dont always need to have two world class defenders like Rio and Vidic to have succes. Sometimes one world class and a good defender (like Cahill or Maguire) next to him is good enough.

Liverpool have one world class defender (VVD) with a good defender next to him and that was good enough to win the cl...

It's like a weird cult. You've got the Lindelof supporters, then you've got the Smalling supporters, then you have the now dwindling Bailly supporters, the Shaw supporters etc.

At least everyone hates Young, so there's that.

He's been fine. His passing from the back between the lines, punching the ball forward has help a lot considering we don't really have anyone in midfield that does it. Disappointed with the lack goals from set pieces, but I guess the quality hasn't been that great
The issue is the price tag, people are expecting VVD, but if VVD was sold he would be going for 150m. VVD is a level above, maybe there on his own for this generation. Maguire is in that tier below.
