Harry Amass set to earn his first start against Manchester City in Community Shield amidst fresh Luke Shaw injury setback | Isn't even on the bench

Hmm okay. Luckily those things can be taught, although if he struggles with that at academy level too it might be tough. Looking forward to seeing him today.
You can't teach temperament, I thought he would look more press resistant than he did against Liverpool.

I'm all for playing young players but when a kid is only 17 and just not yet ready, it's more harmful than good to play him. Reckless from us to be in this position.

I don't know how much we can make those kind of speculations, though. The determination of readiness is based on a number of factors.

You might have someone physically still needing to develop strength, but their stamina levels are really great.
You might have someone who has the physical tools, but is mentally not developed yet.
You might have someone who is still developing physically, but has good or extraordinary mental levels.

So, I don't know how confident I am just looking at any 17 year old and saying, "it's more harmful than good to play him."

Amass might well have a better and stronger mental disposition than you or I, who are older than him (assuming you are), and so his age cannot be a determinable factor without knowing him personally. If he lacks physical development but has a mentally strong and competitive mind, then I'd argue that there's not much harm at all him playing in a game like this. If he plays, and we lose, then he's not going to crumble under the weight of not performing spectacularly in what is effectively a glorified friendly game. If it's just sheer physicality you're perhaps worried about, then you only have to look at City playing Rico Lewis with very generous minutes over two seasons, when he was 17 and 18, and slight of build too.

Ultimately, the medical team, the professional sports scientists, personal trainers, doctors, physicians, nutritionists, coaches, and counsellors who tend to him physically and mentally, know what he is, and isn't capable and ready for.

I think we, as fans, do so much worrying for players when there might be no worries, or fears on their end of things, or on the end of those in daily contact with them.

You guys reckon this guy could be next in line of becoming a starter in the near future after Garnacho and Mainoo? I haven't seen too much of him tbh.
Too early to say. Talented for sure but switches off in key moment ( which Shaw does too)

You can definitely teach positional awareness, but the way you describe the whole package doesn't fill me with hope atm  here's hoping he does okay today.

Apparently it's better to start Maguire and Martinez when they might not be completely fit.

My point is that being forced to play a 17 year old because of injuries who was previously thought to be a year away isn't great. You want to play them when they earn it, when they make the natural progression with their body and ability. Not be forced into it due to all the senior guys being broken.

Seems to be the closest, though Shaw and Malacia’s injuries are probably bringing it forward.

There’s a few others who look good too though … maybe 1-2 years off, but some players progress/get opportunities sooner than expected.

I’m glad Ineos are changing the age dynamic in the first team squad and hope it doesn’t impede opportunities… but guess that’s on them to push their way through and make a promotion impossible to ignore, like Mainoo did.

It’s one game, he’ll either struggle or manage. Either way, he/we learn from the experience, but no one’s expecting him to play LB all season.

Just 17 years of age, big day for the lad. What do we think of him? He hasn't played senior football thus far so this is his rookie year but he is primed to get decent amount of minutes given how injury prone Luke Shaw is. Is Caf okay with blooding another youngster or do we look towards transfer market to sign a backup?
Change the thread title none of it is actually true . He isn’t starting and Shaw hasn’t had any setback . The Sun newspaper are looking for staff though .

He's not in the squad at all, so yeah we're just going with CB out at left back rather than Amass so clearly he's not seen as ready

Just no way a 17 year old is going to start at LB in anything other than dead rubber games further down the line in the season.

Who are the others ones?

The majority of other players who played in the final of the Euros or Copa America won't be playing 90 minutes in the first league game either.
Doesnt seem to a problem to start this match for Lisandro or Mainoo

The real point, however, was that considering everything Luke should have prioritized United, rather than playing two and a half games for England and being unavailable again for us

One of the things I liked about LVG was he would let youngsters get a game in their position rather than rush a player back from injury.

Isn't the community shield the perfect game? It's a friendly after all.

Ten Hagrid the type to treat any sort of trophy winning game as serious as he can, it seems. Said as much before the game on ITV
