Exclusive: Hands off Hyypia

By James Carroll
Date: 4/3/2002

Exclusive: Manchester United last week made an enquiry into the availability of Liverpool's Finnish international centre back Sami Hyypia, ShanklyGates.co.uk can exclusively reveal.

Sources close to Liverpool have informed us that Alex Ferguson's United contacted Liverpool last week only to be given a stern 'hands off' warning by the Anfield club.

Liverpool refused to even listen to an offer for the centre back, who has become one of the best defenders in the world since his £3.6m move to Anfield from Willem II in July 1999.

United probably see Hyypia, who has been linked with moves to Juventus and Inter Milan in recent weeks, as the ideal player to solve their defensive problems once and for all.

However, our source claims that the enquiry could have been an attempt by the Old Trafford club to unsettle the player during the final stages of the season.

Hyypia would command a transfer fee in the region of £20m + if he was to move on from the club he supported as a boy which is highly unlikely as Liverpool are unwilling to sell at any price nor does the player want to leave Merseyside.

Can't see Fergie going for a key 'pool player, this story is BS, made up by a LFC site to flatter themselves and their players.

You could never sign him, therefore he is out of your league ;) , as if we'd sell a world class defender like Hyypia to our bitter rivals

LOL , why does Sami Hyypia need flattering

Plus, if we offered some crazy money, poo would probably accept, then they wouldn't have to take on loan players from PSG.

In all seriousness though, if I were Fergie, of course I'd inquire but conversely, if I were GH, I'd say feck off.

btw, bitter is a poo trait matey ;)

If I'm not picking up on some misguided sarcasm ... one doesn't have to think to far back to when that big nosed tw*t of a manger sold arguably the finest finisher in the country to some bitter rivals up the road... still he has class like Heskey to fill his boots

Firest of all Leeds are'nt bitter rivals, they're cghampinship rivals but not bitter rivals, O'Leary and Houllier are a best of friends and at the end of the day Fowler was'nt a key player for Liverpool, he spent most of his time on the bench and did'nt have the right attitude to remain at Liverpool so we sold him. Hyypia is a vital player for us.

I cant see you say no to a 20m offer.Maybe if you sell pony or the overrated guy you could afford to keep your only class player. Please dont sell henchoz i love his handballs.

No you owe us big time for giving us that prick Paul Ince (anyway Inter sold Ince to us), theres no way you can buy Hyypia so you might us not waste your time and look elsewhere.

Just imagine. If you sold us Hyypia for say, 22m, you could buy Cisse without having to take out a loan. ;)

We had a first option clause but we decided to do youse a favour. :D

Its like this, if we want Hyppia hes ours, his contract is getting short and he is no doubt underpaid by the club that are so poor they have to charge their fans for radio coverage.
But we dont want him, for 20 mill we'd get a better player 5 yrs younger.

Thats the most blinkered thing i've heared, you have NO chance of signing him, he is a key player and is going nowhere. Secondly for you information Hyypia signed a contract extention last season  , and is getting a great wage as are all our top stars, so again you show how little you actually know. At the end of the day Hyypia loves the city and club and has stated his desire to end his career here, so mate stop dreaming he's out of your league.

Surely he's worth at least twice that. ;)

But than we'd have to take a loan just to pay his wages ;)

he get twice that at Utd not to mention extras and sponsorship.
He says he loves the city and wants to finish his career there, big deal, any player with a brain cell would say that before, doesnt mean anything.
Are you telling me that if someone told him they'd double his wage and give him a 1 mill signing on fee he wouldnt jump at it?

Why would he jump to it, we'd just match any offer you made, and i said £35K plus meaning he could be over £35k no one knows precisely, anyway Murt as i said, it ain't gonna happen so

Let me just put it this way Murt, you've got as much chance of signing Hyypia as we have of signing Roy Keane

Don't think you would match a weekly wage of 75k +.

Thats roughly about how much Owen gets, we may not pay out alot on transfers, but when it comes to keeping players we pay however much it takes. Anyway why are we still discussing this, you would'nt even get the opportunity to negotiate wages, as we'd tell you to feck off

I'm not doubting that United buying Hyypia is next to impossible. It's just funny hearing you say that you would match our offers. :D

We operate on a bigger transfer level than the scouse, because you see we sign the rvn and verons of this world and you are hagling over an arsehol reject........

Yeah real bigtime!!!!!!

Is this the same big fianancial corporation who could'nt sign Di Canio until they sold Dwight Yorke , the likes of Figo and Zidane, both have blanked UTD in the past not to mention Lizarazu and Thuram. You do have massive fianancial clout, but does'nt mean you can sign who you want.

Now you're making things up. ;)

Juventus offered Parma about 23m for Thuram and Parma accepted. I haven't seen any evidence that we bid for him.

We apparently bid for Lizerazu after he claimed he wouldn't mind playing for us, but Bayern turned down the bid, citing that they didn't want to sell the player.

I was just making the point to the other poster the united can't buy whoever they want, as for Thuram it was jsut that a lot of you UTD supporters (well the ones i ran into) believed he was on the way and he stated that he wanted to join Juve, forgive me if thats not the case.

Financially unlike Pool we can buy almost anyone, Figo and Zidane perhaps not which is a good thing imo.
If Fergie seriously wanted Hyppia and he could double his wages plus give him a massive signing on fee it would take some stopping.
Its up to the player, clubs have feck all power against a determined player, we'd get a better younger player for the same price if we looked abroad. Id hate to see a Liverpool player join Utd, its funny to see our rejects in a Pool shirt though. ;)

Let's be realistic. Hyypiä would be more than eager to come to United. United have more potential for him as a player, more chance of winning, are bigger and are stronger in Europe. It's clearly going to unsettle the player for the rest of this season..specially if United keep going after him.
