He's not really a bad defender. It's never been a noted weakness for him in his development, and the idea basically comes from that one nightmare game he had for the senior team, so soon after his debut and having seemingly been made first choice with no settling-in. Neglecting the fact that he was sometimes very good indeed in the handful of games before that one. And he got great reviews at Castilla. Plus without Varela we wouldn't have Rashford. He crossed for Mata's assist for Rash's first goal, and then assisted the next two himself! Without those goals he'd probably be back in the U21s and the world none the wiser.

We have a number of players Mourinho might use at RB, but not many actual RBs. Valencia might seem a more Mourinho-friendly type, but he's hardly a defensive rock himself. And Darmian, while obviously potentially a good player, is surely too delicate for Mou. Varela is a proper RB who has been brought all the way up as a proper RB, and he has real, thoroughbred quality. Could be a Bellerin for us. Imagine him and one side and Shaw on the other, our attack would instantly be so much more multifaceted.

Seems a waste to send him on loan, to me. And I'll be gutted if we sell without him getting another stab at taking the position.
100%

Hopefully he will be. Like how Carvajal was for Real, whom himself was sold before bought back. He still have some hopes of being a good player for United.

during his short stint as the first choice RB last season he did better than darmian imo. defensively he is okayish but offensively he is like an extra player joining the attack which is great. just like Brightonian said him on the right and shaw on the left would be a very nice attacking fullbacks to have.

some part of me think he is a good second choice RB to have and maybe we should be looking for a top class RB as the first choice, unfortunately we have so many average RBs at this moment and even fosu-mensah who is a CB/DM has a chance of playing there regularly this season.

Varela has left United on a one year loan deal to play for Frankfurt

I heard there is an option to buy but i'm not totally sure.

Frankfurt are sponsored by Krombacher? Might need to get me one of those shirts for when I go boozing in town.

I'll be watching Frankfurt a lot this season.

His contract expires at end of this season and he is on season-long loan. We are really bad at managing outgoings properly and getting maximum value out if it. Why loan him and not sell this summer only if he is not in Jose's plans?

I heard stories that we were selling him so I'm delighted to see he is only being sent on loan for now. He looked quite good going forward in his appearances last year and that is good to see. If he has the confidence to go fwd then he definitely has the potential for growth, if he had been too timid it would have been a bad sign in terms of his likelihood of developing. Will be keeping an eye on Frankfurt a bit more this year, they weren't great last year so at least we know he will be getting plenty of practice at defending!

Because we don't have a director of football? So no one really cares about the loss. No one gets a bonus if we only make a loss of, say £20m instead of £50m in transfers.

Well, the CEO of the organization should.

He's in the squad for their pre-season friendly against Wehen-Wiesbaden.

He'll come on in the 2nd half.
Are you watching? I can't find the game anywhere so your opinion on how he plays today would be greatly appreciated.

His contract ends at 2018. At this stage of his career, it's important to get regular game time and we can't guarantee that. Unless he has an insanely good season on loan, I doubt clubs who are better than us would be interested in him, and if he does well enough, we can probably get him to sign a new contract a year from now. If he doesn't do well, then we'd let him go because by then it'll be obvious he's not good enough to be a starter.

Ah I misread his contract info on transfermarkt. As contract is till 2018 then loan is not bad at all. Then yeah, depending on kind of season he has and how we are stocked at RB position by next summer, we can take a call on his situation.

Had a couple of outstanding games, I've always thought technically by far our best defender on the ball

Yes i can watch it on TV.
But he's still on the bench.

Edit: He will not play today.
Ah, thanks anyway. Hopefully I'll have an easier time finding Frankfurt games that take place in the Bundesliga because I really want to keep up with Varela's development. :)

I thought, along with Blind and Shaw, that he was one of our most gifted defenders technique wise, too. That's why I thought José might've been onto something when he played him in midfield against Wigan.

I really like him, I hope we keep hold of him. A bit like Rashford, (or Rafael as another right back) he's one of our players who I get an extra kick out of him doing well.

Just seen the post.....his contract is til 2018.

First we must hope that he'll be first choice there.....they have now three right-backs in the squad.

Yeah, I know nothing is for definite in regards to his place in the team. Though, I am optimistic for him and think if he performs as well as he can, he can be a very important player for them. Who knows, with them already being well stocked at RB maybe Frankfurt loaned him to play in the centre of midfield after seeing his performance against Wigan? :p

We'll see......their first official match is just in 4 weeks so he has enough time to impress his coach.

I wish him well.

I rate him hugely and will be surprised if he doesn't go on to have a really good career - either with us, or most probably somewhere in Spain.

So now it seems it's down to either Darmian or Valencia for RB ? Fosu-Mensah perhaps, but he looked all over the place against Everton in the semi.

According to Eintracht Frankfurt's Director of Football Fredi Bobic

- They have no option to buy him
- They see him as right-back and right winger
- 4-5 other Bundesliga clubs wanted him too
- Coach Kovac has followed him since the U20 World Cup and is a massive fan of him

Hopefully has a good season and comes back and fights for a spot against the winner of Darmian and Valencia this season. I think he showed the importance of an attacking fullback last season, it was like night and day compared to Darmian playing there. Especially against weaker teams who sit back it makes all the difference and a player like Darmian may as well almost not be there.

Loan him (without buying option) is a sensible idea. He's very inexperienced for a player of his age and need to learn how to cope with his physical inferiority in top-flight football and improve his positioning. Still he's too good as a footballer for us to give up that easily.

Not surprised he's gone. Mourinho will only have defenders that can defend and while this lad is useful moving forward with the ball he's looked a liability at times doing his primary job.

Well he's not gone, he's on loan. He's clearly still in Jose's thoughts, otherwise he'd have been sold.

He's not here and in my book that means gone. You're saying he's not gone ? Where is he then ?

So a manager sends a player on a season long loan when he is 'clearly in his thoughts'........

Yes, do you know that they come back after a loan, it's kind of the point of it. If he didn't want him back he would've sold him, out there thinking I know.

I could give you a list as long as you like of players sent on year long loans that will never be seen again at OT. We've shipped hundreds out as a prelude to moving them on permanently.

A few might have a future but that list is considerably shorter and he's at an age where he should be much closer to first team reckoning.

I might be wrong, it's just my opinion.

Some here still haven't grasped that loans are rarely ever good things, from a player's perspective.

Shame to see him go in truth. Think he could of actually broke through this season as our RB situation is still pretty much up in the air. Hopefully he will make a big impact in Germany and it will potentially convince Jose to give him another chance next season.
