Guardian's Top 100 Footballers - 2014

Neuer number three? I agree he is the by far the best goalkeeper in the world but shouldn't be third on a list which includes outfield players.

Put Muller at the lower end of the top 10 and I agree with that list.

Why? Müller is Bayern's top scorer (goals and assist), fourth or fifth with goals and assist in Europe this calendar year for club and nation in that category (behind CR7, Messi, Benzema) and in difference to Suarez, Bale and Agüero has had a great World Cup (and apart from Suarez and Agüero more in the CL)

True, but Suarez, Bale and Aguero are all better players.

Says who? It is not about potential but performance...

I would even form it like this - Müller's contribution was by far more than goals and assists...

You for sure cannot say that City's or Argentina's defense started with Agüero... ;)

How is Neymar ahead of Lahm and why isn't Schweinsteiger in the top 10?

Bastian in the World Cup final was an absolute warrior

Why isn't Di Maria in the top 10 either? Tbh, Costa should be in it too.

Poor list.

I'm not sure we can read into positions after the top five, there's a good thirty to forty players at a similar level with nothing but personal preference that would alter positions from person to person. I'd have Modric above him anyway, that's for sure.

This. After about the top 6/7/8 it all becomes a bit pointless i think. Apart from knowing that Daley Blind should come 'somewhere near the end' there's nothing to base his position on.

Top 10 is spot on IMO. And the list bar a few stupid things (like Pogba, Xavi, Iniesta being very high while Godin being low and Gabi not on the list) is quite good. One of the best lists I have seen in recent years.

Some expert put Pogba at the number 1 spot :wenger:

You'd think this list was put together by Futhead (FIFA) users.

First thing I saw was Zlatan at #13. Couldn't care less after that. Costa above of Zlatan

how is Manuel Neuer the 3rd best footballer? It's just complete bullshit.

By being the best keeper in the world and likely the main player of Germany who won the world cup. Nothing bullshit there.

True, but Suarez, Bale and Aguero are all better players.

There is a very good chance that he will go down as the better player compared to all of them. His titles before the turned 25, the goals and assist numbers.
He is a superstar, a great fighter and I wouldnt give him for any player in the world if I had the control at Bayern. Not Messi, not Ronaldo.
He is a winner, a gamechanger. A better one in the big games then Ronaldo.
Just 25!!! as well.

He does a great job for Bayern and Germany, no doubt. But, I wouldn't have him in my top 10. I'd have Lahm and Schweinsteiger though.

Reading fan comments from the top clubs is always the same when it comes to these lists. They all want to know why it's not dominated by their players and at the same time pick a rival player (usually Suarez) and claim he didn't deserve to be where he is.

No doubt Arsenal fans will be questioning why Alexis wasn't in the top 10 and Scousers will be questioning why Gerrard wasn't number 1 with Sterling at number 2.

Xavi, Casillas and Pique are guaranteed to be included in lists like these no matter how undeserved. Falcao shouldn't be in there as well. Did he even play much in 2014?

Top 10 players deserve to be there but obviously there will be debate as to the order they were placed in.

19 in total including sub appearances so he certainly shouldn't be in there. 9 goals/0 assists all season in the league/cups.

Lists like this are pointless other than as discussion points, but you can't please everyone

Football fans opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one

Müller did better than them in 2014 and that is what the story is all about.

And how do you define a better player? Technically better? Müller seems to have everything needed to perform on the highest level and that is it! He found his own way to use his abilities to succeed - and it works. You might not like his way - but somehow people should accept it.

Well with my United hat on, we won zilth regarding player awards in the year we won the treble. They said the votes were all spread. I think there was always a pressure to stick a German in there and I don't think Germany got as far as they did because of their Goalkeeper. I think they are always outstanding and I'd give it to Muller who I've no doubt will go onto be Germany's all time goalscorer at some point. I think personally Robben should have been third but there tends to be no consistency with these lists.

Beckham finished second on Ballon D'Or voting.

German players won't win anything individually this year too, but it is fair that one of them to be on top 3 in these lists. And it was always going to be between Neuer and Muller. For some reasons (maybe because keepers are rarely in these lists) they have decided to go with Neuer.

Thought Keano was a bit unlucky - 98/99 he was better then Becks for us I think. Being banned from the final maybe cost him but I fancy he just wasn't their cup of tea and becks was prettier ;)
