These are always pretty fun to do. They've done the list from 11-100 so far, with the final ten tomorrow. Voted for by 73 'experts' including footballers like Hernán Crespo, Gilberto Silva, Slaven Bilic, Didi Hamann and... Quinton Fortune.

The list so far:

Now argue away.

Which should then mean we have a top ten made up of;
Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, Robben, Lahm, Neuer, Muller, Suarez, Neymar, Aguero

Who I would order as;
Messi
Ronaldo
Robben
Aguero
Neuer
Suarez
Neymar
Muller
Bale
Lahm

Vidal has by all accounts been shit this season, yet is 10 places higher than Rooney.

I'm done looking at it now, these things are always stupid.

Is this being based on ability or achievement? Either way it's a load of shite, typical Guardian hipsters.

It's the Guardian though, expect Neuer to be number 1.

Rooney below Pirlo, Tevez, Lewandowski, James, Iniesta, Kompany? Mmmkay...

Klose at 70? It's not a bad list, per se, but it's not a good list.

Courtois had a very good world cup as well, it's undeniable he's had a much better year than De Gea.

De Gea @ 55, Slippy @ 80  And they call themselves football experts, I think I'll leave it there.

Not really, you have to remember what Courtois was doing last season.
Yeah, the voting would have been done a little while ago so De Gea's spectacular form of the last few weeks wouldn't have been taken into account. Even so they have him as the third best keeper in the world so he hasn't been too harshly done by.

People take lists too seriously. It is per definition the opposite of anything objective. 79 Totti, 80...Wait, is that? Slippie G? YOU feckING USELESS PIECE OF SHITS CALLING YOURSELVES EXPERTS.

Courtois at 14 with De Gea at 55 is laughable.
Probably not. Generally the success of the team is also linked with individual players. Courtuis was one of the main reasons why Atletico won their league (the biggest surprise in football for quite a few years) and went to UCL final. He also had a good World Cup.

De Gea on the other side was the best player of England's seventh best club and Spain's third keeper.

I prefer De Gea, but can completely understand why they put Courtuis higher.

Yeah i had pretty much the same post wrote out so i'll just say 'this'

Pogba above Silva, Modric, Ribery etc? Costa is also too high in my opinion. No one will be able to rank the top 100 footballers without attracting criticism though and the list isn't ridiculously bad.

Modric and di maria should be top 10 easily. De gea, rooney, silva and a few others should be much higher as well. For a top 100 list I've seen a lot worse so it's not terrible I guess.

Great to see Blind receive recognition so early into his career, this isn't the first list I've seen him on.

lol @ the popularity contest. Juventus is a team full of scrubs. They didn't make it out of CL group stage with that mighty midfield of theirs, but no one seems to take that into consideration.
Seriously, no player playing in Italy should be in top 50 on this list. Their ventures in Europe confirm this.

Both Kroos and James are massively overrated. Bale and Neymar will be too.

Pogba is waaaaaaay to high in that list, laughable/
I'm not sure we can read into positions after the top five, there's a good thirty to forty players at a similar level with nothing but personal preference that would alter positions from person to person. I'd have Modric above him anyway, that's for sure.

Who is ? Not James because he's one of the nicest players you'll see.

What, no, the whole hype around him is obnoxious, not the player himself. In my eyes he's not better than Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Toure, Rooney, Fabregas, Iniesta and maybe one or two more on that list.

Although I understand it probably had a lot to do with his WC performance so there's that.

Having Rooney in 43 and Pogba in 20 is just ridiculous, although we had a poor year, Rooney has been better in every aspect. Or Boateng in 57? Arguably the best defender at the moment, won titles, won the WC.

I'm not exactly sure that is true tbh. I don't think Pogba should really be so high, but saying Rooney was better than him last season isn't exactly true. You also have to factor in WC performances in which Pogba stood head and shoulders over Rooney.

Rather unsurprisingly - the captain, spiritual leader and rock in the midfield of arguably the second best team in Europe in 2013/ 2014, Gabi Fernández has been completely omitted from another top individual players list. Yet somehow the likes of a subpar Pique and Alves find themselves in the mix. Quite staggering really and makes one question the criteria used by the decision-making panel.

Gabi not in the list? Wow

Rooney was way ahead of him, in the CL but domestically too. Although the team wasnt doing well, Rooney was individually still class, contributing 43 goals+assists. Rooney played 3 matches in the WC, that shouldnt have such a big influence on a whole year. Or shouldnt Ronaldo be favourite for the WC, he was at least as bad as Rooney.

Its just that I don't exactly agree with that statement. I think he was one of our better players, and he did better than he did the previous season, but he was far from his best IMO.

So, who will they list as their top ten?

In no particular order...
  • Ronaldo
  • Messi
  • Robben
  • Neuer
  • Suarez
  • Lahm
  • Bale
  • Neymar
  • Aguero
  • Fellaini

Rooney far from his best is still a mile better than Pogba, he is as inconsistent as it gets. This list is literally saying that Pogba has been Juventus' best player this season, above Tevez, Pirlo, Vidal, it's just laughable.
