Greta Thunberg

The belief that there arent any suitable alternatives is horribly misguided. There are so many solutions and alternatives happening around the world that are slowly but surely making positive changes. You need to start to actually look, when you do you will see them.

like what?

It's amazing how ignorant people can be about how radical societal change actually happens.

Usually this is followed up with an explanation of what is really true

Why? You only hear about her when she is in trouble with the law in various countries.
She doesn’t have the gobby precocious kid angle anymore to shock and delight, and people are familiar with her shenanigans now - she doesn’t get much exposure anymore.
Im not saying don’t agree with her cause, but there are other and better ways to go about affecting change than anti-social behaviour and disturbing the peace.

history tells the opposite story

It's unpleasant for her and all those scientists to shine attention on something that makes me sad. I prefer to hear about climate change solely through large corporations telling me how much they care, they make me feel like everything is okay.

If we just wait I'm sure they'll sort it out, they do care loads.

What an incredibly naive world view. Name me an important historical movement that hasn’t involved civil disobedience.

Come on @Plant0x84, I’m waiting for this too. Enlighten us as to how our human society just does the right thing in the end.
Who do you think I am, Simon Schama?
Human society never does the right thing. We are the worst species alive and the worst thing to ever happen to this planet. Other than that my answer would be natural selection. The weak and stupid always get weeded out in the end.

Oh do give the examples! Especially the ones that make wholesale changes to industry and private sector profits.

The ones raging about traffic jams whilst the world around them collapses is a great example.

So this is Greta v the weak and the stupid?

While that may be true, they are the ones mostly polluting the debate, not the planet.

If it was going to just be an instant death for everyone, while before that everyone was living as normal, I could get on board with this thinking. But it clearly won't be that, so this way of thinking is incredibly selfish.

The point of a protest is to get attention.
The right attention though don't you think? She's getting attention but in this particular situation, it's mixed. It seems as if she got more negative reactions vs raising awareness. I love that she's one of the few trying but disrupting the daily lives of regular citizens will overshadow her cause.

Not only the fact that disruptions will turn people off, but historically, publicity stunts tend to benefit the brand of their perpetrators more than the causes they claim to support.

Agreed. She's crossing over into influencer territory or will be viewed that way if she continues on this new path. Would be a shame because all her previous efforts will be viewed from a different perspective.

For what is worth I interact with lots of teenagers and young adults and the vast majority like greta and support what she does and the protests. Older folks are usually so entrenched in their "meh it is what it is" attitude they fail to realize they are not the target of these protests. If you see greta getting arrested at a protest and your first reaction is to call her a twat or suggest these protests are counter productive, you were never in a million years going to be an active ally in this fight. So the protesters are right in ignoring these complaints of disruption and focus on the folks that can actually become active allies.

That’s the important part. Those who claim to be turned off by this stuff, didn’t give a shit before and wouldn’t have otherwise. They just search for excuses to justify their lack of action and their gigantic ignorance towards the severity of climate change.

I was thinking mainly of the Greenpeace movement in the 80s and 90s. Plenty of spectacular boat interventions of larger ships, but in the end, they did little to change policy and plenty to enhance Greenpeace's brand and fundraising capability.

Good point. The lines between being a monetized, for profit social media influencer and conscientious activist for a political cause are increasingly blurred these days.

All protests are publicity stunts. They'd be pointless otherwise.

No protest is ever praised by the establishment, by definition its them you are protesting against do they try to tut tut the whole thing. So most media, who are linked to many the of perpetrators, focus on the micro disruption and how Billy the cab driver (the ordinary man) is disgruntled.

The only time is if it fits with a national agenda abroad. We care about women in Iran because it casts a negative light on Iran.

Good point and her aim is to get people talking about it and here we are. I guess their hope is that the negative attention will bring some awareness which is better than no awareness.

Exactly. In this case there is awareness but huge opposition backed by the endless pockets of the perpetrators, so keeping it lit is very important.

Exactly this. Pissing everyone off and getting herself a criminal record won’t endear her or her cause to anyone.

Nah, she's not pissing me off, and I couldn't give less of a feck about this sort of "criminal record".
