Grand National 2011

This is going to be a really beginners question here but how does each way work? I'm going to stick a tenner on Oscar Time each way and it says my return is £190. What do you get if he comes second or third?

The thing is that a tenner each way will cost you twenty to make because it's two ten pound bets. One bet is for the horse to win (at the stated odds) the other is the horse to place, it will specify what fraction of the win odds you'll get in this eventuality and how many places the bookie is offering (usually up to fifth in the Grand National).

Don't fecking back any horse with a bookie only paying a fifth of the odds a place. You want a quarter.

Oscar Time is a decent enough stayer but the ground is maybe a bit quick for him. Can't see him winning as he'll get outpaced at some stage but has place prospects.

Who are you looking atfor the GN Nearco and and are you backing anyone else today?

Anyone have Ballabriggs backed? I just had 2.50 e/w so I just about covered my other bets, no profit for me there unfortunately. I have a Lucky 31 I could win a bit of money on if the last 2 races go my way though.

Glad the flat starts soon. They went too fast on that ground and I personally think they should run the race in March where underfoot conditions would be more suitable for that kind of race - springs are getting warmer after all.

Got 18-1 on him this morning, regretting only putting a quid on though...

Still, a better life than most animals.

True but it still doesn't excuse it.

Surely something can be done to prevent this from happening.

Less runners for starters. Literally!

Yeah, less runners, less demanding jumps. Basically you'd have to ruin the event.

Hmmm. Would lowering some of the jumps really ruin the event?

To ask horses to run an unprecedented 4 miles in this heat and go over jumps approaching 8feet just asks for trouble.

Running the race earlier in March instead of April would result in softer, safer, jumping ground. The jocks wouldn't go as fast so as to conserve stamina on their mounts.

So running in mud pits is safer? Hmmm I never knew that.

Horse are less likely to get jarred on landing or injured falling on soft ground. It's why they don't have jumping in the summer when the ground is hard.

Yup.

Gone each way on Oscar Time, Ballabriggs and Silver By Nature.
