Graham Potter | Deal agreed with West Ham

They're one of those clubs where the fanbase feel they have a 'heritage', at least in terms of the way they play. Probably because they won the World Cup in '66 and all that...

Spurs are another. Even though for the first decade or so of my life WH were a yo-yo team between the top 2 divisions, and Spurs have never won anything. Well there was that league cup that one time, I guess.

It's why they sacked Moyes, even though he'd actually won a trophy. Doesn't matter how stable and solid their team is, they always think they should be up higher in the table and playing good football. I guess all fans think like this, in one way or another, but can't help but feel they're a lot more self destructive with it.
Technically speaking, they didn't sack Moyes. His contract ended and they didn't renew it.

Potter and West Ham seem like a good match. On the other hand, replacing Moyes with Lopetegui was always an odd choice and never looked like it would be good decision. Probably how many people felt about Moyes coming to United in 2013.

He should choose West Ham. It’s a no brainer. Much better squad than Everton. Everton have a championship level squad at best

Potter to West Ham, Southgate to Everton or vice versa keeps both away from United for the foreseeable future.

I think there is a degree of delusion at West Ham about what can be accomplished with that squad though, I don't think they will settle for less than automatic top 6 finishes at a minimum and all accomplished with beautiful football. Throw in that Tim Steidten seems to wield a lot of power and has already fallen out with two managers and it does not look a very inviting job.

Everton can effectively be for Potter what Newcastle has been for Howe, a little bit of cash in this window and a fan base that will take anything remotely resembling progress after a couple of seasons of Dycheball, a much lower bar to clear for initial success. Ultimately Everton are a far bigger club than West Ham so if he backs himself then he should expect to accomplish big things there or at least rehab his reputation to the point where he becomes the obvious successor to Tuchel if that is what he is looking for.

I think going from Dyche to Potter would be stupid to be honest. Theres a pretty huge gap between them in how they set up. I'd expect it to get worse before it gets better and there would be growing pains. West Ham have the breathing space to get away with that (and better, more suitable players in most cases). Everton don't.
Not that im saying they should keep Dyche.

Dyche press conference was quite something. He definitely knew if I lose one more game I'm pretty much gone.
Sorry I don’t follow Everton much but is it definitely right choice to sack Dyche? I’d back him to keep you up again and then ideally part ways with him. You’re not in terrible position in the table and recently got a draw vs Arsenal, Chelsea and City. Of course draws only get you one point but he should be able to get enough points?

West Ham find a sensible and ambitious option after that godawful decision to hire Lopetegui and they won't even give him a long contract?

Brighton went from Hughton to Potter and if you look at the players stats you see a massive shift in terms of them which shows that it is possible to change the mentality and ethos BUT you are right in terms of timings. If it were the summer I'd be very happy to go with Potter because I think he's better than the Chelsea debacle showed. I agree that his system takes time which we don't really have. There is the argument that we shouldn't be going for a crisis manager ala Dyche to the summer and I also agree with that so it's trying to balance the fine line between getting a manager in who will long term hopefully be a good option but also be able to help us in the short term. I think we do have players who can reflect what Brighton had though in their system with Potter in terms of CB, CM and out wide (assuming we get Philogene or go for someone of his profile and have Ndiaye/Philogene), but there are glaring issues at fullback in terms of that.

Yes. I disagree about not being in a terrible place in the table. If we are 20+ points, that's not terrible. To be 1 point above the drop zone and Ipswich? That's terrible. We only managed to win 8 games in 2024, with 4 of them coming in April. So that means we won 4 games in 9 months. We barely score any goals at all from open play and when you analyse the way Dyche plays it's clear why. We have one tactic which is to lump the ball to DCL and hope he gets a knockdown to our wingers or Doucoure. It worked last year because we still had an element of surprise in some respects but when it doesn't it means you're relying on the defence and Pickford to keep you in a game and hope you get lucky chance to score. We have zero attacking patterns of play and it's just piss poor. If it were any other manager then neutrals would be saying that we would be well within our rights to want him sacked.

Absolutely agree on the timing issue, Potter had a whole pre-season to bring in players like Trossard, Mooy and Lamptey and work with the squad, I think one of his issues at Chelsea was that he joined midseason and didn't handle that well.

Any chance of Moyes going back to Everton? also Hughton is available!

I'd like to see Potter at West Ham and see what he can do there.
He is a good coach and likes his teams to entertain so I think he would be a good fit.
His time at Chelsea was a shitshow and I wouldn't pay any attention to it.

Also choice of living in the London area or the Liverpool area.

Which in millionaire terms is Surrey or Cheshire. Not too much difference.
There’s a lot of difference. Surrey is within easy reach of London; Cheshire is near Manchester and Liverpool, neither of which (presumably ) have the same sort of pull for Potter as London.

If it was good enough for Ancelotti, I'm sure Potter would manage.

Potter pretty much has his roots firmly planted in the south, makes more sense for him and his family to stay in London. He wouldn't need to uproot if he took the West Ham deal.

Surrey is about 5c warmer and less rainy. Also a world apart in terms of access to culture, restaurants etc...

Liverpool, or more realistically Cheshire, every time. Plus you'd get to work for a proper football club as opposed to West Ham.
