Continuing with the gangster theme, 90% of people will prefer Goodfellas, but I read recently that Scorsese was a bit unhappy with it - especially having Henry Hill rather than Jimmy Conway (Jimmy Burke) as the lead character (a result of basing it on the book Wiseguy) - and made Casino in an attempt to remedy what he saw as the problems with Goodfellas.

Anyway two iconic movies, been going through some of the scenes of youtube again, feck me Casino is violent!

Possibly heresy but was really underwhelmed by Goodfellas.

One classic, one half decent movie.....then followed up by a third using the exact same formula 20 odd years later in Wolf of Wall Street, which is also pretty decent, but not classic.

Wolf of Wallstreet is a classic. Give it time.

These gangster-themed movies seem to have lost mainstream appeal in the 21st century. Too bad, I really like gangster movies.

I think they've been done to death. You can only spin the "rise and fall" story in so many ways.

Goodfellas is one of the best films of all time. Casino was pretty good, but not quite on the Goodfellas level. The Godfather trilogy aside, Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco are my favorite mob flicks.

I guess so but it doesn't have to be 'rise and fall' all the time though. Plenty of gangsters retire as rich men and die because of natural causes. Also gangster-movies don't have to be based on real persons to be entertaining although a movie does have a certain mystique to it when you know it's a true story.

Honorable mentions:

- Carlito's Way
- King of New York
- A Bronx Tale

90s crime movies are

More depth to Goodfellas - the cinematography, storyline, acting and score are all richer. And while Casino's decent enough, it's very derivative of the film that came before.

It's a terrible film. A bloated overlong one paced attempt to replicate one of a great artists best works. Like that new single the Stone Roses released, but worse.

It's rare that I stop watching a film but I did with Wolf of Wallstreet, even Margot Robbie being insanely fit couldn't save it.

Taxi Driver shits on them all.

Goodfellas is my fav movie of all time. I will never ever forget this scene:

Its a movie whenever its on, no matter which point it is, I will just watch.

This is great...

[edit]: and this:

Goodfellas has, arguably, the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. Well, at least for OSTs using popular music.

But yeah, great movies. Also...

Yeah I loved Goodfellas. Wolf of Wall Street too.

Where did it all go wrong for Di Niro?

Rocky and Bulwinkle?

I think by the time of Casino and Heat, he'd stopped taking any kind of challenging roles and was basically playing the same character. Last great performance was probably Cape Fear.

Well he was good in casino and I loved him in This Boys Life too....and for some reason Frankenstein

So I'm gonna say late 90's

Did you overlook the Departed or think the formula he used is different?

I loved him in Meet the Fockers . One of my favourite comedy films!

I thought it was fairly good fun as well...but on the whole he's gone downhill as an actor from someone who did acclaimed dramas to someone who's done whatever big Holywood movie is out. He's got plenty of duds in there.

Out of the two Goodfellas is much better...memorable scenes/dialogue etc. While Casino's alright it was relatively unmemorable, I'd struggle to pick out much that's iconic or interesting about it, and for the most part it's basically Goodfellas on the West Coast.

The best thing about Casino is DeNiro's wonderful suits @simonhch .:

Goodfellas is getting a cinema release next month in 4k

I will be going to see that in 4K, good fellas is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
Casino is good but not quite on its level imo
