Golf Season 2010

Incredibly harsh on Johnson but it was the correct decision. How that can be construed as a bunker is beyond my comprehension but they were warned. He copped it himself after he grounded the club. I'd say he thought he got away with it after he wasn't called up on it at the time.

Woods speaks publicly about divorce

Tiger Woods today spoke of his sadness at the end of his marriage to Swede Elin Nordegren earlier this week.

On Tuesday Woods and Nordegren's divorce was confirmed after the world number one golfer earlier this year apologised publicly for infidelity after a series of revelations emerged that he had had affairs.

'I wish her the best in everything,' said Woods, before The Barclays in New Jersey, the opening event of the FedEx Cup play-off series.

'It's a sad time in our lives. We're looking forward in our lives and how we can help our kids the best way we possibly can. That's the most important thing.

'As far as my game and practising, that's been secondary. We're trying to get our kids situated to our new living conditions and how that's going to be. That's where our focus is going to be right now.

'You don't ever go into a marriage looking to get divorced. That's the thing - that's why it is sad.

'My actions certainly led us to this decision. I've certainly made a lot of errors in my life and that's something I'm going to have to live with.'

Asked what trying to make a comeback was like with everything that was happening off the course Woods stated: 'It was a lot more difficult than I was letting on.

'Being asked questions all the time, even as the tournaments are going, is always difficult, especially when I'm trying to work on a few things.

'Certainly you try and block it out as best you can and focus on a shot, but at times it certainly was difficult.'

He has worked more with Sean Foley since the US PGA Championship two weeks ago.

Woods added: 'It's just a matter of getting it more solidified. I still haven't officially decided to change my swing yet, just because this would be the fourth time since I've been on the PGA Tour.

'It's an undertaking that I have to wrap my head around because it's going to take some time.'

European interest will centre on the performances of Paul Casey, Pádraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Justin Rose.

All four have elected to stay in the States rather than cross the Atlantic for the final Ryder Cup qualifying event in Scotland.

They will all know by now not to leave their best until last on this occasion - the final round will be in progress when European captain Colin Montgomerie names his three wild cards.

There is Ryder Cup importance too in how Woods plays. A bad week could knock the world number one out of the play-offs.

That would give American captain Corey Pavin no more opportunity to evaluate Woods before he names his four wild cards on Tuesday week.

Hopefully now that his personal situation is becoming less complicated I think we'll see a return to form from Tiger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In terms of the Ryder Cup Im starting to get the feeling the USA may cause an upset. Alot of strange vibes from the European team at the moment.

History shows ranking/form goes straight out the window and the best "team" generally prevails, not convinced with the leadership of the European team this time round.

As always its a great sporting event and heres hoping its no different this time round.

He has to pick Molinari now he's won. I think he'll go for Molinari, Casey and Harrington as the wildcard picks.

Moinari and Casey looks like certs to me. One from Rose/Donald/Harrington I reckon. Being Irish I hope its Padraig. I'm not so sure though

Come on Monty you big cross dressing fecker.

Suprised Casey's not there, Molinari was expected after his win and I thought he would go with Harrington based on his reputation.

Europe's team on paper should be stronger, but if Tiger's back to form and chosen by the Yank captain, he's almost as good as 2 players. Should be interesting...

It will be interesting to see who the Yanks pick.

Giving Garcia the fourth vice-captain role was a nice way of saying "you're not on the team son." Honestly thought Rose would be in. 2 big wins in America and up there this week. At one point he was up there every week. Should have gone.

Another win for Kaymer. The European team seem to be in great form going into the Ryfer Cup.

Its gonna be the likes of Kaymer thats gonna steal the headlines this year. I hope so anyway because it still has been GB + Ireland Vs USA untill now. The Other Europe lads are gonna be the real strength we have this year!

Luke Donald showing some great form going into the Ryder Cup, 2 shots ahead.

Will be interesting who performs the better between Woods and Harrington. Both have been picked on reputation, having struggled a lot the past 12 months.

Edit: he's just dropped a shot, now shares the lead with goosen.

Tiger Woods is no longer world number 1. After 281 weeks as the best golfer, Tiger is replaced by Lee Westwood, after Kaymer failed to finish in the top 2 at the Andalucia Masters. A bit unfair on Kaymer imo as he did win a major, whilst Lee didn't, but at last someone replaces Tiger as the best.

Still, I expect Tiger to reclaim his spot next year.

G-Mac, Kaymer share award
Duo share Golfer of the Year award for the first time in its history

The 2010 European Tour Golfer of the Year title has been awarded jointly to Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer - the first time it has been shared.

Recognition comes at the end of a season which has seen both players break through and join the ranks of major winners - McDowell claiming the US Open title in June before Kaymer won the US PGA Championship.

Kaymer pipped McDowell to the end-of-season 'Race to Dubai' money list title but with both players part of Europe's winning Ryder Cup side, it was McDowell who took the lion's share of the plaudits at Celtic Manor by claiming the winning point.

After much deliberation, the judging panel of writers and commentators were unable to split the pair, meaning the award will be shared for the first time in its 26-year history.

Humbled

McDowell, who also beat Woods in a play-off on Monday to win the Chevron World Challenge, said: "I am truly humbled to accept this coveted award.

"It is the icing on the cake on what has been a very special year for myself, Martin and everyone involved in European golf.

"It is an honour to share this award with a player of Martin's calibre. He is one of the best players of our generation and I am sure will enjoy many more successes in the years to come.

"I achieved many of my dreams this season and feel fortunate to have enjoyed some very special moments. However, the highlight of the year for me was being a part of the winning European Ryder Cup team.

"There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of the Ryder Cup and the experience of playing for both your team-mates and the European fans under the most extreme pressure.

"I hope that I am lucky enough to play in many more successful teams in the future."

Kaymer said: "This has been a truly great year for me and winning this award is the perfect ending.

"It is recognition for my performances in 2010 and to be voted for by the golfing media, the people who watch and report on our sport throughout the year, makes me feel very proud.

Footsteps

"I am always trying to follow in Bernhard Langer's footsteps and to see that I have now won an award that he was the first to win back in 1985 is very satisfying indeed. But he is still many steps ahead of me!

"Graeme deserves this recognition as much as I do. His winning match in the Ryder Cup was huge for all of Europe and for both of us to now make history in terms of sharing this award for the first time represents a very proud moment for both our families and also shows how strong European golf is right now."

Not that McDowell and Kaymer were the only Europe-based players to make the headlines in what has been a bumper season of success for Tour members.

South African Louis Oosthuizen became Open champion at St Andrews, while Lee Westwood took over from Tiger Woods as world number one.

Meanwhile, Ian Poulter, Ernie Els and Francesco Molinari all won World Golf Championship events.

Poor choice...

Northern Irishman adopts diplomatic approach

Westwood: critical comments

Is this yet another case of protectionism by the PGA Tour or are they so desperate to win something? Wouldn't have something to do with Rory not joining the tour next year? Maybe the PGA Tour just employs the same voting process as FIFA! Come on, fair's fair! Lee Westwood

World number one Lee Westwood has criticised the PGA Tour for snubbing Rory McIlroy as their Rookie of the Year for 2010.

The hugely talented Northern Irishman finished third in the last two majors of the year, claimed his maiden Tour title at Quail Hollow in May with a stunning final-round 62 and then played an important role with fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell in Europe's Ryder Cup triumph in October.

Westwood felt this clearly elevated him above award-winner Rickie Fowler, who though clearly an up-and-coming talent, has yet to win on the PGA Tour.

Westwood wrote on Twitter: "Sorry, 140 letters is not going to be enough for this rant! Just seen Rickie Fowler has been given rookie of the year! Yes he's had a good year but Rory McIlroy third in two majors and an absolute demolition of the field at Quail Hollow! Oh yes and on the winning Ryder cup team! Please!"

Last month McIlroy announced that he would be giving up his PGA Tour membership next year to fully commit himself to the European Tour. Westwood felt this may have had something to do with the snub.

Westwood added: "Is this yet another case of protectionism by the PGA Tour or are they so desperate to win something?"

"Wouldn't have something to do with Rory not joining the tour next year? Maybe the PGA Tour just employs the same voting process as FIFA! Come on, fair's fair!"

McIlroy refused to be drawn into a debate after finishing fourth at the weekend's Chevron World Challenge in California

He opted instead to congratulate Fowler. "It's fine," he said. "Look, I really didn't want it. I'm not a rookie. When I joined the PGA Tour, I was already in the world top 10. Rickie had an unbelievable year. He deserves it."

Asked if he'd been overlooked because he had snubbed America rather than the fact that he wasn't a true rookie, McIlroy said: "It might be a little of both."
