Goalkeepers preceding Onana (in my lifetime)

This thread makes me feel very old... I can remember far too many before Chris Turner (who, I felt, was very underrated just because he was only 3ft 2in tall!). Stepney/Paddy Roche anybody? Roche was The Doc's blindspot...
Do you remember David Gaskell? I only mention him because he played for both United and my hometown club, Wrexham - nearly 100 appearances for each according to Wiki

So I googled it and it seems the previous world record fee for a GK in 2001 when he left Juventus was Peruzzi from Inter to Lazio the year before (2000) for £15,7m, before that the WR for a keeper was Pagliuca from Sampdoria to Inter for £7m in 1994.

Van Der Sar went for £7m to Fulham, which would puts him in the most expensive keepers ever category of the time, but in the same year Buffon went to Juventus from Parma for £33m which is why VDS left Juventus in the first place.

Didnt that make VDS the most expensive goalie in PL at that time? or was it Barthez cause i swear we broke transfer record for Barthez.

No, Buffon was, and he held that title for years.

I'm talking about PL term because obviously we all know that Buffon was the most expensive goalie in the world when he moved to Juve.

Might have been the most expensive GK in England, not sure though. I remember the transfer fee being a big deal at the time.

Poor old Paddy. Doc threw him in at Highbury and he had a nightmare. His confidence was absolutely shot though he did hang on through part of Dave Sexton's tenure. My two favourites though are Gary Bailey and Alex Stepney from the old 1st Division days.

When I was first following this forum it took me a while to figure out who the PIG that kept popping up in threads was.

Paddy Roche was appalling. Ended up at Halifax if I remember correctly. Gary Bailey was very good although he was at fault for Arsenal's last minute winner in the 1979 fa cup final - just coming into his prime when he got injured while away with England and that was pretty much the end of his career. I think United offered £450k for Jim Blyth from Coventry to replace him, which would have been a world record fee for a goalkeeper, but he failed the medical.

I was at that game in 1979. We would have done them in extra time except for that error but he was young and inexperienced. That was one of the few games the United fans chanted Sexton's name. He saved us in the last seconds against Brighton in 1983 though. The story was that his old man gave him an African charm that he put in the goal that would lock out opposing forwards. He never conceded again in a Wembley final.

Were you not alive when Gary Bailey played for us GB? You're not THAT young, surely?

He went on to have a very good career as a motivational speaker and has written books on the subject.

Early 60's when I first started going to OT we had 3 goalies. Gregg and Gaskell (both known by most of the "oldies" on here I would imagine) and a 6ft 2" Irish lad Ronnie Briggs who was 3rd choice. Briggs was thrown into the 1st team for his debut away to Leicester and let in six. He did make a further 8 apps for the 1st team. I doubt though if anyone on here would remember him??

I do believe we had to wait until 66 before we had a top goalie. I'm not saying Gregg was not good. However not top notch and there were better goalies at some of the other clubs back then.
Alex Stepney who we paid 55,000 to Chelsea for, was a class keeper. So good our reserve keeper - Jimmy Rimmer, as good as he was, didn't get a look in. Rimmer moved on and had successful careers at Arsenal and Villa.
Gary Bailey came after Stepney and was a great servant for the club and part of the Tommy Doc era. Although not on the same level as his predecessor.
Following Bailey and up to today we have imo had 3 klass GK's and no more. The one we have today not being one of them!

100% clean sheet record

Absolutely disgusted that this absolute shot stopping, clean sheet totalitarian, legend of the modern game, man mountain, was missed from this list.

Why am I even on this forum?

I thought he left us to begin a career as a train robber and fugitive from justice.

I no Taibi gets a lot of flack being our worst ever keeper, at least in the premier league era, but i swear Ricardo was worse than him, every game he seemed to give away a penalty.

Gary Bailey was hugely underrated... thrown in at the deep end on a very stormy day at OT when many keepers would have fumbled the ball. he was faultless

Leighton was my first United keeper as a kid. I was too young to remember most of it but had enough videos to know it wasn’t good.

That Everton game where Bosnich made his debut for us is on YouTube and is a bit of an eye opener in terms of just how bad he was at kicking. Also worth watching as Keane starts a couple of fights with the Everton players
