Eagle eyes will see that the picture above shows him catching just ahead of McClair, but for the opposition. He was on loan to us as cover but made 0 appearances

Nah it was the right time to go. Even in the 99 season he made a few blunders. As you say he's levels were dropping.

Citing the training, the demands on the physical side, the constant travel, and it was taking him longer to recover from injuries.
He felt he could no longer stay at the level of fitness United demanded.
