Given tilts for United

He's a good shot stopper but being a goalkeeper is much more than just doing that.,

He cannot command his area, he's awful on crosses and he hardly comes off his line.
Not what we need

Look this keeper has to endure comanding Paul McShane at international level, he'd be able to deal with others who can actually defend.

Not much of an improvement on PIG imo, struggles on crosses.

He had shit defences infront of him all his careeer, maybe if he had a quality defense in front of him commanding his area might be a whole lot easier. It would be interesting to see how the likes of VdS or Cech would have coped with the defences Given had in front of him through out his career to date. If a keeper of Givens quality & experience takes over from VdS we should be thankful.

Well Cech probably has had some poorish defences prior to joining Chelsea, to be fair.

Not going for someone in their 30s? Dunno who said that, but you're dumb as hell. Why do you think Foster left? If you want to talk about age and experience he ain't half as bad as most talk about him.

All these young players being talked about...yes they're excellent but when you look at United, you want someone who's got enough games under his belt, not just some odd 3~4 years of first team experience. That's United, and SAF wants a goalkeeper he knows he can trust in.

So quite frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if I see a first choice goalkeeper in their early thirties, and I think most others should expect the same.

PS - Not a fan of Given, but the posts about young players ONLY was beyond ridiculous.

We have done worse than Given in the past and he could do a job for us. But Id orefer we went for a longer term investment and got a keeper we could plan a defence around for the next few years.

Id take Joe Hart in a flash.

There's some total crap being banded about in here about Given.

Yes, his best years are probably behind him, but when he was at Newcastle, he was probably one of the best keepers in the Premiership, year in year out.

I'm sure Van der Saar probably has too in his career, thats the point i'm trying to make there could be quite a few keepers out there thats game would come on considerably if playing with a quality defence in front of them.

We allready know Given is a quality shot stopper in his Newcastle days he was probably making more saves in a match than VdS would have had to make for us in a month. The commanding the area thing might not be an issue at all with Given if he was playing for us.

I don't believe he is too old either, he looks like a lad that looks after himself theres a good 4/5 years left him yet.

Probably, but that's only one element of being a keeper, particularly with the way most of them flap at the ball nowadays. I didn't think Neuer looked any great shakes at the WC (and ditto Stekelenburg) but people raved about him so perhaps I'm wrong.

No, I agree, thought Neuer was shite at the World cup and I watched all Germany games. He was shocking on crosses at times. Can't judge everyone because I don't know what leagues people watch week in week out but I reckon a fair few have just seen him in a couple of good Champions League games and along with the paper hype think he'd be perfect. If he was in the Premier league week in week out under our eyes I bet he wouldn't seem as good.

Whereas Given has been one of the top keepers for several seasons hence why City signed him, not just 'shot stopping' either. Think there is a sense of pride at admitting one of their bench players would be good enough or useful for us, yet IMO both Given and Hart could be good for us, with our team and players, defence etc. City have a few players who'd get in our team, just how it is now. And what if they bought Buffon next summer and Now Hart falls out of favour, would we say he's not good.enough either? Given has had more good performances than Harts loan season at Birmingham too.

I've seen Given come off his line a few times, like all proffesional goalkeepers he knows that you have to close down angles, he has good footwork and possibly has better distrubution than Kuszczak too. :nono:"
:lol:Dude, Do you even understand what a line keeper is? A line keeper is a keeper who hardly ever comes for crosses. Whose strength is not in dominating his area aerially. Such a keeper is great at shot stopping and coming off the line to grab balls at attackers feet. They are best suited to Spanish and Italian football.

You are under this strange impression it means a shit keeper.

I didn't see Hart straying off his line on Wednesday too much, and when he did he played rushed balls, so he must also be a "line keeper"
 Man first find out what line keeper is. Before disputing about it.

Thought it was a tennis anology.

No perhaps about it. Neuer is a superior all round keeper to Given. Same as Adler. It's Stelkenburg who isn't as good as Given.

Im sorry but Given is not a line keeper (never even heard that saying either). Never in a million years. To say one of the best premier league keepers in the last 10 years is best suited to Spanish or Italian football is a strange call too.

World class shot stopper, more than good all round goalkeeper. Would be perfect for 2-3 years.

We wont get him though.

Why are people even considering a guy who can't get a game for City? Do they think Joe hart is some kind of God in goal? Do they think Manchini is wrong to pick Hart? I just don't get it, we're Manchester United, we are striving to be the best club in the world, therefore we need the best players in the world.

This is particularly true in goal which is such a hugely important position, shown by our relative successes when we've had Schmeichel/VDS in goal compared to others. Does anyone think Given is currently one of the best keepers in the world? I doubt it. Does anyone think he has the potential to become one of the best keepers in the world? Of course not, he's 34. Therefore where is the rational in signing him? Why don't we sign someone who is one of the best, or someone who could be?

Jeez some people get excited over the prospect of any signing, no matter how shit.

He is not happy being on the bench at Citeh. I would imagine that he wont be happy on the bench with us as well.

he's shite. Overrated. Shit when coming for crosses, and crap on the deck - which is one of the key attributes a Utd keeper needs because of the number of times we pass back to him.

There is no way Given will be coming here. This article is pure shite. Whoever posted it on here should be ashamed of themselves. Its probably from the daily star or something like that.
I reckon United will buy Sketelenburg or whatever his name is or some top young prospect from Denmark
