Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that France international Olivier Giroud has agreed to join the Club on a long-term contract.

The 25-year old striker completed a medical before agreeing terms at the Club’s training ground on Monday evening. The completion of the transfer is now just the subject of formal processes.

Giroud arrives from French champions Montpellier, where 21 goals in 36 league appearances made him the French league’s joint top goalscorer last season and also earned him a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

Giroud, who enjoyed a two-year spell at the Stade de la Mosson and broke into the national team in November 2011, flew to London after representing Les Bleus at the European Championship in Ukraine and Poland.

The Chambéry-born player spent his formative years in France's lower leagues, developing his game with Grenoble, on loan at FC Istres and then at Tours FC, where he played alongside Laurent Koscielny for a season before being awarded the Ligue 2 Player of the Year award in 2009/10.

Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted to have secured the signing of Olivier Giroud. He has a very good physical presence and is exceptional in the air, with a great work ethic. We are excited about Olivier joining us and he will add an additional dimension to our attacking options next season.

“He has proved that he is capable of performing at the top level with club and country, and we saw what a big influence he was in Montpellier’s championship-winning side last season. We all look forward to Olivier joining us and seeing him play in an Arsenal shirt.”

Giroud, whose contract with Arsenal will officially commence on July 1, said: “I am delighted to be here at Arsenal and to be part of one of the great teams in English football. It's a huge satisfaction to join this great club and it’s been a dream since I was young to play in the Premier League.

“I was attracted by the philosophy of football and Arsène Wenger’s 'touch' at this club. I have always admired Arsenal with its great history and reputation, and I now hope to achieve great things here. I’m very proud to be a Gunner and I will give my best for all the Arsenal fans.”

Giroud will join up with the Gunners for the Club’s pre-season preparations ahead of the new season.
RVP replacement?

At least you won't have to use Gervinho and Walcott now.

If Arsenal get another defender or 2 I could see them challenging again.

Walcott will be our first choice.

Most probably, if there is no change in formation, it's Podolski - RVP - Walcott.
Backup will be Gervinho - Giroud - Chamberlain.

Giroud as a substitute will provide us a different dimension, with Persie playing behind him.

He is what Chamakh should have been and many fear he will go down the same fate; but for me he is much better than Chamakh, for the mere fact that Giroud can actually use his legs to shoot.

With the addition of Podolski & Giroud, we might have added 15 or so goals in our play, compared to last season.

I read on wiki that he signed his first professional contract when he was 19 and he spend a long time playing lower league French football.

If he's there to be a backup for RVP then he's a quality steal

I'd be worried that RVP is leaving though. He said himself "I like to play"

And also the fact that he can create chances out of nothing and create chances for his teammates.Chamakh was heavily reliant on wing play and crosses, Giroud has more in his arsenal (pun intended).

It's weird. I love my mates who support Arsenal they're great blokes but they're all gooey over Giroud.. Fair play to the lads in here I am sure they know a lot more than my mates but it's a bit weird.

If they were signing Van Persie now from another team I'd be saying fair play lads. Great buy and stuff. But one of my mates said his signing eclipsed the signing of Kagawa? I was a bit baffled. It's still another gamble signing. If he doesn't adapt then they're fecked again after the Chamakh fiasco???...

Hope he does well though.

Can't wait to see him (and Podolski) out on the field next season, I think both will be great additions for us. No faffing about with Podolski, and Girioud looks like the kind of striker that can bring everyone into play, along with having a wide range of skills of his own.

Though having these two signed nice and early makes me think that Van Persie is on his way out.

Anyway, on a lighter note: Giroud + Podolski + 10 million = Andy Carroll.

Well let's wait and see how they do before we start comparing them to the Carroll.

I'm still not bothered about losing RvP if we get a large amount of cash.

The two of them cost less than Carroll so by default it's a much better deal than acquiring Carroll and from a football POV I have no doubt it'll be the case so I don't understand your cautiousness Grinner

I do think Wenger might have some information about RVP perhaps refusing to sign that contract on the line and has already made preparations for that. No way would he sign 2 strikers when he usually plays only 1 striker for the most of his managing career in a 4-3-3 at the Arse

Chamakh/Bendtner/Jeffers/Wiltord.

I'll maybe think about giving it the big 'un when we sign a decent midfielder too.

Podolski will play on left.
Giroud will be Chamakh's replacement, a better one at that.

In short, i mean Robin will stay.

13m for Chakmah's replacement who came on a free? That's quite far-fetched considering Wenger's famous reluctance to spend and spend big unless absolutely needed

Anyway we'll see

Signs are this summer though that we've finally realised you can't just take the mickey out of your opponents and assume you're guaranteed CL football regardless of what you have in your squad. We were a Martin Fulop away from playing Europa League last season; we have to strengthen.

Montepiellar(whatever) president confirmed the deal is worth less than 10m pounds. Steal.

The price was a good one mainly because the president Nicollin and Giroud have an excellent relationship and Giroud badly wanted to go to Arsenal. If Nicollin wanted to fetch more there were chances Wenger wouldn't be interested anymore.
Giroud is a player with excellent behavior and mentality.Always encouraging his teammates and never shy to make effort himself.
