Arsenal are closing in on France striker Olivier Giroud, according to his club Montpellier.

The 25-year-old scored 25 goals last season to help Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title, igniting the interest of several top clubs.

But Montpellier manager Rene Girard insists it is Gunners manager Arsene Wenger who is leading the chase, and told French radio station RMC: "Arsenal are very interested and Giroud wants to play in England, if Arsene agrees with the president, he will sign for them."

Giroud is to consider his future after Euro 2012 with Arsenal favourites to make their second signing of the summer following the acquisition of Germany marksman Lukas Podolski.

How would they do that? Giroud through the middle, RvP on the right, Podolski on the left?

I don't really know much about Giroud but Podolksi has played on the left a lot and Van Persie is a proven deadly striker through the middle so I would assume Giroud is shifted to the right

That won't make any sense IMO. RVP should play in the centre, much as the Arsenal deny it, i think Van Persie is off.

Yeah I agree, he plays centrally for Montpellier so wouldn't make sense if RVP was staying.

Except arsenal are so short on strikers than even if they get Giroud they are not overly stacked in that department

Fair point. On second thought, he needn't be out wide though - they could always pull him back and play him as a No. 10 - doesn't do Rooney's prolificacy any harm.

GIROUD

PODOLSKI RVP WALCOTT

SONG WILSHERE

not bad at all tbh, maybe gervinho for walcott

That would be very attacking. Song and Wilshere in a midfield two is hardly a solid combination defensively. They both like to get foward and Song can barely perform the defensive role with three in the middle let alone two.

Where would that leave Ramsey, Arteta, Rosicky? And they seem to be in for M'Vila as well...

Don't think he has any plans to move away from 4-3-3, to a 4-4-2 which most people on here seem to think it outdated anyway.

RVP would be wasted like that, he has shown this year that he can be an absolute beast when injury free and played through the middle as the lone striker (we all assumed that anyway). It would be stupid to change that.

EDIT: I agree with Theon, it's not the style of their formation that is the problem, it is the players they have that aren't that level good enough yet. Plus Arteta has been excellent this season for them and him, Song and Wilshere would be a very good midfield.

I know its a cliche but the PL really is going to be harder than ever. Looks like Chelsea and Arsenal are rebuilding and ofcourse City will strengthen at some point.

Chamakh and Park are as good as gone. Giroud is a necessary purchase to actually provide some competition in the team.

A defender who can play along the backline, a CM and maybe an attacking midfield option and I'd be happy.

He's much better than Chamakh or Park. Dont think he's going to go there to sit on the bench

If RVP stays, there can only be one place for Giroud and that's the bench. He's better than Park and Chamakh combined. If RVP leaves, he'll be pretty much guaranteed to start all the games

Rotation, RVP can play across the front three and they could occassionally line up with him behind Giroud. I don't know what's Giroud's style but I assume he's a target man?

Park was a weird signing. He didn't get many chances but when he did he looked well below the level required.

Is this fellow another shitcnut Frenchman that Wenger wouldn't touch with a bargepole if he was English?

No.

He looks a quality forward, left footed, good in the air and can set up team mates. Basically if your team had Van Persie but Van Persie left, he's about as good a replacement as a team like Arsenal are going to get. Has also been linked with Valencia and several other clubs.

Has the most shots of anyone in Ligue 1 last season, won the most balls in the air of anyone in Ligue 1 last season, also 8 man of the matches (3rd behind Nene and Hazard) and led his team to winning the league last season.

So you know... He's good and far too good to be a backup at Arsenal imo. I would personally think either he's their new starting striker if he goes there, or he'll go to one of the several other clubs who have been linked with him.

RVP can play across the front three but he's clearly at his best in the central role. They could play very well together but that would mean that Arsenal would either go 4-4-1-1 (2) or 3-5-2.

He's also as dreamy looking as Bob Pires.

Or probably we will rest one of them and not play all of them together because we also have Walcott, Gervinho and Chamberlain in our team.

If Van Persie was told he'd be playing deeper off a number 9 he'd be off IMO. They'd be better off getting a young number 10 to sit behind him and play Wilshire and Ramsey in midfield.

After a season he had in his current role, you really think he fecking cares whether he is asked to play there again.
