That's the whole point: I don't think he was thinking. Brain completely switched off.

To be fair to him, as much of a bell end as he was there, did pretty well to actually take the ball and not kill the man.

Yeh looks like an awkward one.
As I said, in that gif it doesn't look as brutal as in my recollection, but at full speed, Yang M'biwa's left leg sweeps Nasri's left leg at the level of the knee in a really violent fashion. I don't know whether it's the right or left knee that's injured though?
Looks like just a standard attempt to stop a break away by tripping the player with a bit of misfortune that the player got an unlikely injury.
Just a bit of a Sunday league tackle. Nasri is unfortunate, but it's not the worst tackle I've ever seen.
There is a better angle, more straight on that really shows the contact moving his knee.
Anyone got Rafael's tackle against Swansea. Forget who it was on, it was in the 2nd half right on the sideline, really lunged in and cleaned the ball and the man.
