Perhaps it is because I can't figure out why anyone would be so emotional about signing or selling players.
I couldn't agree more. Why does it happen? This isn't a thread to complain about the transfer muppets or to try and tell people how they should react to things like Thiago going to Bayern or us making a bid for Baines or whatever, it's simply a thread wondering about what's behind this phenomenon. How did it come about? Ten years ago there obviously wasn't this abundance of information available to give people the opportunity to follow every single moment of these wonderful transfer "sagas", but with things like making a bid for Fábregas - did people react with embarrassment and outrage at something like that? Or is it down to SSN and the rest of the media successfully making the transfer window a big event of the football season in itself, and then this has been given it's own drama-filled narrative for people to get consumed by?

It's information overload combined with the fact that football is just really, really important to some people.

It's partly down to the club looking incapable of signing a central midfielder ever again.

Agreed. I think the more pressing the need for a player in a certain position, the more fraught emotions tend to be.

I think some sets of fans, like our Anti-Glazer brigade or the Arsenal fans, obviously feel money should be invested back into the club, and so they look at the club's perceived transfer policy and is angry that more money isn't invested.

I think that's where a lot of the emotional attachment comes from, i.e. "they're only here to suck the club dry".

I'll just throw this out there: People who are more "detached" from the club seem to care more about transfers. It's like part of a soap opera/football manager style entertainment that they can enjoy from their sofas. Of PL supporters I know, the general trend is that match-goers aren't as bothered about incoming transfers. But who knows.

It's really pisses me off. It's embarrassing. It's like this FM generation when you're delighted to have completed that star signing, but it's just not how it works in real life.

Sky definitely play their part. They make a huge deal out of deadline day with reporters up and down the country monitoring every potential transfer going. Then of course there's the rise of twitter meaning there's more speculation than ever before, and before you know it, you have a group of 'football fans' who care more about transfers than football. It's sad and embarrassing and I know there'll be posters on here who fit that category.

Who cares about winning anything when we might sign Fabregas?

It's all about how the media play it. They're the instigators.

Same here. Media is everywhere today (literally) 24 hours a day. Imo, society in general is still adapting to this relatively new scenario (last 15 - 20 years or so).

Moreover, the way news and even films etc is being projected today, it is giving away only partial information in a way to trigger the fantasy of the receiver. In the case of football, it s working perfectly

 That's bollocks.

Well that's a dangerous post.

Arsenal fans want us to invest more money? And how did they end up in the same pot as the Anti-Glazer brigade. Dafuq?

You speak as if transfers and winning things are totally unrelated things.

Also, when there's no football then of course we're more interested in transfers. You know, because there's no football.

The sagas themselves are generally exaggerated on here, it's become a laugh at times for people who browse a lot. Although it annoys me when people seemingly start criticizing the club off the back of a saga that seems worse due to the fact that the person is following it so much.

This could go hand in hand mate, that's why people care about transfers.

Completely agree. I doubt that we would be so muppets if we were looking for great wingers, strikers or defenders (in the level of Cesc Alcantara). Our desperate need for a top midfielders brings the worst out of muppets.

It' worth noting that for the most part the Caf' is drastically over exaggerating when it comes to transfer sagas, that's half the fun.

Shit journalism, uncontrollable 24/7 connections to information no matter what it is and people with a vicarious obsession with thinking because they support the club they think they know how it works when in reality they know little to nothing about it.

I haven't picked up a single paper article in this summer. It's been brilliant. A little slower than normal but satisfying none the less.

I think the whole "I'm a muppet lol" shtick makes it seem a lot worse. The whole thing is weird and embarrassing but pretty avoidable.

I really don't see what's strange about it. If we're emotionally invested in the club why wouldn't we be emotionally invested in who the club brings in? It's part of being a fan. Anyway, the vast majority of the transfer bullshit on this site is just a way of entertaining ourselves until the new season comes around. Not much else to talk about, is there?

Okay can we stop blaming FM for everything. Seriously how does blaming FM makes any sense in that regard? It's like blaming killer games for people shooting up schools.

I think in general there are people who take everything that happen to the club very personal. If it's us missing out on a top player or another top player wanting to leave, there are some people who will react very emotional to it, may it be due to being insecure persons can't handle rejection or just generally being a very emotional person who get emotionally invested into everything, who knows but it's sure as hell not due to FM.

Thiago was. Nobody seems that emotionally involved in the Fab transfer though, probably because most people don't think it will happen.

The emotional investment in the caf and its members is more of a strange phenomenon.

Some of you take the transfer forum way too seriously, and I'm not talking about the muppets.

To be fair, if it wasn't for RedCafe I'd be a lesser muppet.

Sounds like sanctimonious, "top red" bollocks to me.

To be honest, I don't know what came over me during the Thiago 'saga'. It just seemed so possible, all the right signs. Not only that, but I was/am a huge fan of him. Loved what I'd seen of him. It didn't quite seem like a United transfer. Out of the ordinary. A very stylish player. I think as someone has said, information overload. There was 'news' and tweets umpteen times a day. It was SO ON umpteen times a day. It was just ridiculous.

I've never been that invested in a transfer story. Sneijder, Ronaldinho, Hazard etc... They were exciting possibilities, and if they happened, they happened. This time, it was just crazy. Didn't get a whole lot of work done during that time. It didn't help that a "friend of the family" Graham Hunter was updating every day about it. I think that certainly amplified the situation into utter silliness. fecking Hunter.

If we miss out, it doesn't change my love for United, but us signing the best players is hugely exciting, isn't it? And certainly boosts the prospect of us remaining competitive with the mega-rich, which is what we all want. But that said, if we had a baron run and slipped down the table, I wouldn't stop loving United, or lose any love for it. We're very blessed to have been competitive for so long. No other club in English football can really boast that. It's very unique in the modern era in England, as teams go through cycles, where as we've always been there since 1991 or thereabouts.

Cider's "Tomorrow. 11am" pretty much screwed up my emotions though, and I don't think I'll ever be able to love again.

You speak as if transfers and winning things are totally unrelated things.

This is the crux of it.

People are arsed about transfers because success in the modern game largely revolves around transfers and keeping the team competitive. Especially in our league now with City and Chelsea spending huge sums every window United fans are aware that not competing with that will harm our chances of winning the league.

I think it's mainly down to how boring the Summer is without football. Transfers and pre-season games are the only connection we have to it during the off-season.

Pretty much goes for every other muppet, it's just a bit of fun here on the Caf'... Don't why some take it all that seriously.

I know the majority are taking the piss and having a laugh. As I said the whole "muppets" joke probably makes it seem a lot worse. But there are people who genuinely get pissed off and start losing the rag about the club because of every single little made-up detail that they read on twitter.

They're loopers.

Pretty damning coming from a bloke who searches, downloads and watches football matches played before 30 years.

We've head cases in every thread, the match threads remain the worse...
