George Best has laughed off Manchester United's chances of regaining their Premiership title.
Old Trafford legend Best, who is recovering from liver surgery undertaken last month, believes that, while Arsenal are likely to keep their domestic crown and Real Madrid are runaway favourites to remain top dogs in Europe, his old team's biggest chance of silverware will come in the FA Cup.

He told the Mail on Sunday: 'At the start of this season I was sure Manchester United would be walking away with the Premiership - how wrong I was. The team is a joke.

'My bet is that a rattled Manchester United will go for broke and lift the FA Cup. They won't be happy with just that - but at the moment it's all they deserve.'

ANY COMMENTS???????????????

He's probably been misquoted, in addition to being fairly realistic. It's a fair opinion, though I don't think he said it in the words the paper writes up.

However, he should also know better. DON'T WRITE UNITED OFF. EVER.

Everyone has their own opinion and Georgie is entitled to his, though I reckon he's been refusing doctor's advice again and getting plastered every night. ;)

There's a documentary on Besty on Wednesday, bbc1, 10.35, if anyone's interested.
Should be quite interesting, and will most ceratinly show some of the breath-taking things he used to do for us on the pitch.

"Alone"? I don't think so. He's got a fit young wife for company, the dirty ol' dog!

But Besty does seriously care for this club, and is only saying what his heart is telling him, I won't believe he's purposely having a go at us.

GEORGE BEST HAS GIVEN UP ON US

It's not the first time he's done this, is it?
Didn't the old codger leave early during the '99 CL Final.

:)

and we went on to win the Treble. Is it a sign ?

I wouldn't put much stock in what Georgie has to say right now,he's on some heavy duty anti-rejection drugs and they are known to cloud one's judgement. Add to that that he didn't get a visit from Sir Alex while recovering from his surgery he's probably a little miffed to say the least. Happy recovery George we all love ya ;)

Best is a United legend, but by reading the above posts you'd wonder if some of you really understand that he played in an era where there was a stauch pride to wear the red of united. Best himself was a beer lout, but he was one of the most gifted players to ever kick a football.

Let's take the Manchester United history in context and not just since 1992 eh lads ?

Besty is RIGHT if that is what he said I'm afraid. The United v Spurs game was "THE" most pathetic and boring game I have seen united play in 5 years. I will still support & love them, but at the moment what Best has been adjudged to have said is correct.

THE" most pathetic and boring game I have seen united play in 5 years. Get a fecking grip mate, I saw the game live and I have to say that your assesment is way over the top. Ok United didn't play that well but Spurs were hard to break down and we did well to get the points. As for Bestie I watched him from 1966 on and yes he was great but that doesn't give him the right to knock our team now, especially when some words of encouragement are what is needed not his negative sensational comments.

I think he shouldn't make this comment in the beginning of this season. Or.... is this a cheering??

If he wants to say," this is not the team that I want to be," then should he simply say," this is bullshit. See what I brought to United!"

It's my opinion. I'm not going to argue with you over it

What Best said is his personal opinion.

I find it to be rather sound and rational.

If you don't like what he said, don't read his comments in the future.

I don`t think anyone should get too worked up about Bestie`s comments. The man has just had major surgery and is on medication, And frankly, he is at a time in his life when he does not care about the opinions of others. Georgie is now about 55 if I am correct so why should he worry about what anyone thinks now?

Old timers always cast their minds back to the good old days and yes, Manchester United were famous for their cavalier football. But the English game is far more sophisticated now in every way and while someone like Bestie would still be a star, I don`t believe he would be given the leeway to do all the tricks he performed when he was playing.

Sure defenders in Bestie`s day were harder and could get away with things they could never do now. But formations and tactics are different now, making it harder for an attacking team to score against good not to mention top quality opposition.

And let me remind you all of Bestie`s comments in MU`s offical magazine when we signed Veron. He said MU now had the team to lift the European Cup again, as well as the Champiopnship. If we want to talk about egg on somebody`s face, then it is completely splattered over Bestie`s so why worry about what he has to say in this respect?

At the moment we're 7th in the league... but soon we'll be back in our top position. ;)

This is what he said; note the bit about the the champions league!

Gunners simply the Best -

George Best has branded the current Manchester United team "a joke" - and says Arsenal already have the Premiership sewn up.
The Old Trafford legend, who is recovering from a liver transplant, has gone back on his pre-season prediction that United would be back challenging for the title.
And the former Northern Ireland international believes Sir Alex Ferguson's side's title rivals will be laughing at his old club's predicament.
Best said: "At the start of this season I was sure Manchester United would be walking away with the Premiership - how wrong I was. The team is a joke.
"That sounds harsh, but the rash of injuries, loss of good players, poor discipline and instability surrounding the club have done it for my team.
"The Premiership title is a non-starter. I think that particular piece of silverware will be heading back to Arsenal come the summer.
"As for Europe I don't think anyone's got a chance of beating Real Madrid, although Liverpool could come close.
"Right now, even Leeds, Chelsea and Newcastle are laughing up their sleeves at Manchester United - they think it's the end of an era."
Best says United's most realistic chance of silverware this term might be a tilt at the FA Cup, and added in his column for the Mail on Sunday: "That might be the case - but I wouldn't bet on it.
"The team is in the doldrums, but on their day they can still beat the best with ease.
"The Premiership is all about consistency. The FA Cup is all about rising to the occasion. That's something no team does better than United.
"My bet is that a rattled Manchester United will go for broke and lift the FA Cup. They won't be happy with just that - but at the moment it's all they deserve."

Ok, I understand that Best was good for us in his time but it's annoying to say the least that some hasbeen figures it's gonna prop him up by having a go at us. It's not so much that, which I can understand might have been prompted by frustration but the air of arrogance and assurity with which he said it, almost as if to say "if only you had me there" is just plain pathetic.

I mean christ, what do you think this is going to do for the team? He clearly doesn't want to help us. Go on United, go out there and flog Leverkusen 6-0 and send Besty back in there for a heart transplant.

Besties spot on, ok weve got injuries, but come on only, gary nev ,scholes and keane, tottenham were missing 13 players....still at least were keeing the goals out even if not scoring em

erm, just out of interest, how many of you actually believe that george best writes that column? particularly at the moment while he's convalescing following surgery?

United's greatest ever player deserves respect, and just like if Keano says some players are too concerned with their Rolex's, then it should be listened to. He's only said what everyone in the game thinks - this is a pale shadow of the trophy winning United, for a number of reasons, and Arsenal are plainly a level ahead of us and favourites for the title, as are Real for the CL. Certainly no one here loves United more than Best does, and if you do love United, you'll never be so disrespectful of Best.

well if the team keeps struggling to score and put away all the chances it has, we'd keep losing to minor teams 1-0....I cant even see the FA cup ;)

N.B. That is the worst case scenario.

I disagree. Just because you are a football legend, doesn´t mean that you are always right in your opinions. Beckenbauer is Germanys greatest ever footballer, but everbody in Germany knows that 80 % of his talking these days is just nonsense.

Bang on.

Best is right. The table doesn't lie. End of story.

I hope for some serious transfer business in January.

Yeah, but he's German. ;)

Give the guy a break.
For fecks sake the mans dying.
You wouldn't be feeling to optimistic in his shoes would you.
Don't forget what he did for us.

A rocky start and everyone becomes a critic. Geez, either support them or don't but when they have a slow start don't suddenly not be a fan. If you are a fan you will support your team no matter how well/poor they are doing or do. That goes for people who used to manage the team or play for them. Fair weather fans should just shut the hell up.

Oh dear me what a mixed up bunch we have on this thread. We have Neil who is making 100% sense of this issue and then we have utter freakin MORANS who would fit into what Keane called the "Prawn Sandwich Brigade"

If Besty wrote this article he is correct. If he didn't write it then whoever did is correct. It is an article written in the last week based on the current situation in addition to the history of last season. I just wonder where the hell some of you United fans have been, and I question do you even understand the Glorious & Rich history Manchester United Football Club has been blessed enough to encounter and live through. Go on you MUPPETS, keep pulling the wool over your own eyes and pretend it's all ok. Then you never need to worry, but I'm telling you one thing, the true United fans tell it as it is but still love their team. Besty's article doesn't make him love United any less; on the contrary I would say he is concerned enough to say it as it is.

......but this is all a waste of time because there are ALWAYS going to be people like you on this forum and going to Old Trafford, who can not look the truth of the current situation in the eye and admit to it. It's a bit like having a brilliant party and then getting drunk again the following morning to avoid the hangover. When it's bad just admit it and get behind your team, but please quite the bull that it's all fine and that Besty is talking nonesene. Go home those of you who are calling him a senile fool, because the only thing such comments indicate is that you're not a strong enough supporter of Manchester United Football Club to admit when they're below par and that perhaps we won't be celebrating like we have done in the past.

You make a mockery of the past 70 years.

Spot on.

In fact the fans who can comment on the team's weaknesses and yet still get behind the team in every match is a "truer" fan than these blinkered morons.

Ichk - Very True !

There's nothing wrong with saying that perhaps Bex had a stinker or that Veron hasn't been doing well of late, but when becomes a situation whereby it's SELL SELL SELL then that is a few steps too far, but on the other end of the spectra one needs to be realistic and base everything on what has gone before us. So if the team is lacking then the team is lacking and there is nothing to hide this if the case may be.

We have been given the priviledge of Old Trafford by the likes of Besty, Law, Charlton to name a few. They went before us and paved the way. What they consider to be "Glorious" is as important as anything else ! They have seen Glory and loved it, and want the Glory days to continue. No one is direspecting Manchester United, they're getting behind the team and fanning the flame. I'd say that the likes of Charlton, Best and Keane get so angry at times when the magic is lost through egotism and self centeredness in the club.

We will NEVER stop supporting the team and the club we love, but a true United fan dicerns and speaks accordingly. Blindness is for the fan who just wants all the highs and none of the lows.

I would like to add on - blindness is for the fan who refuses to accept the fact that we do have our "lows" whether he/she wants to or not.

I can't believe some of the bollocks on here. Bestie is entitled to his opinion, we can choose to agree or disagree with it. Just because he criticises the team does not mean he has given up on us or no longer supports us, he's just telling it how he sees it. George Best has done more for United than any of us has ever done and for that he has my undying admiration and support.

Nice one. And its not just him either, on MUTV there have now been many ex-united players who've openly commented that this is a long way away from the side of old, and mentioned a great deal of the problems we have on this forum.
