Gaming General VR thread

I'm considering getting Meta Quest for remote work. I normally use just a laptop but having multiple screens would help.

Is it a good idea or would it not really help? Basically I tried Meta Quest recently and am trying to justify buying it as I'm not much of a gamer

They're great for porn. East to justify the purchase that way tbh

Have never tried it for that purpose, but the battery life isn't great and I personally get a bit of a headache if I have it on for anymore than about an hour.

Its a genuinely ace bit of kit though. I use it wayyy more frequently than my PS.

Oh and I think the porn on there is a bit shit and weird tbh.. :o

“where’s carl, sweetheart?”

“he’s been pounding himself senseless for the last 45 minutes with those nintendo googles.”

I wouldn't recommend it as a productivity tool. You'd get fatigued after an hour. If you want a real justification it's tremendously immersive for VR porn, so you have that to look forward to.

I purchased a PSVR2 at launch last year, I enjoyed it for a few months (Horizon came free, its beautiful but I couldn't get myself to finish it, GT7 is solid), but hadn't touched it since last spring and had zero desire to set it up to play (I had it in my small gym room where there was the most space, so my PS5 was sitting in that room also. The fact that the Quest 3 was wireless piqued my interest, and I figured I'd grab it on amazon then return it if I didn't like it. Once I put it on, I fell in love. Man, pancake lenses are soooo much better than fresnel. With the VR2 I had to struggle to keep the system in a perfect spot on my head otherwise you'd lose most of your clarity. With pancake thats no longer an issue. The headset can move but the visuals will stay clear. And the visuals are much sharper than I expected, considering the VR2 is powered by the PS5. I didn't even miss the OLED screen (I love my OLED tv) because the mura was pretty terrible whenever it was dark on the VR2 making it almost pointless to have the deep blacks.

On top of that I love the more varied software. Small experiences like Walk the Plank should be available on VR2 but for some reason simply aren't. Workout games like ''The Thrill of the Fight' (hiiighly recommend, that game had me panting and sweating and I'm in ok shape)/Punch Fit/Les Mills Bodycombat are fantastic and other than shooters, nothing like that on VR2. Mixed Reality games like 'First Encounters' are fantastic too. Plus other videos Sony doesn't allow on VR2...

Graphically, its not that far off from what the VR2 was doing, but not having a wire hanging out the back of your head. And I don't have a gaming PC, so all my play is standalone. With the third party software 'Quest Games Optimizer', the graphics on Red Matter 2 are almost on par with what I played on the playstation. Most other games might not have as much detail but they're still sharp and look more than good enough to make you believe you're in that world.

I ended up selling the VR2 and accessories on marketplace. I've been playing/working out with the Quest 3 basically every day once the kids are asleep since I've purchased it

Still use my Quest 2 it ticks all the boxes for me.

You need to pay for it (some sites allow a one time charge which gives a 30 day pass and you can download whatever you want). The actual 8k stuff is fantastic. With MR its almost photo realistic. They won't give you actual 8k unless you pay though, because its an incredible amount of data they have to use. The small trailers and demos are usually under 4k and terrible to save bandwidth

Which is good. Maximizing your purchase. Just don't ever try the Q3 out of curiosity because once you see the pancake lenses it makes the quesnels feel soo outdated. I won't buy another VR system that isn't at least pancake. its probably the most important thing over processing power/screen material/weight/etc. I just wish Meta weren't such cnuts
