General Forum shutdown

No, as I said, as far as I can remember, forum viewing is done on a group basis. So, for each group, you have a list of what that group can see, not the other way round. My memory could be going and I could be totally wrong, but I think it was done that way, you can then go to the user level and do the same.

I'd log out and check, but I have no idea what the feck my password is so I'd never get back in.

Google can't see the newbie as guests can't see the newbie. I just can't remember which way around it was done, whether it's the group that has the access to the forums or the forums specify the groups that can see them.

Niall and Modmins - cleaning the general from the inappropriate content was a hell of a task, too much for 15 people. Maybe you shoud have asked some trusted posters to help you out with it.

Anyhow, shame you had to close the general :( but i don't think you had any choice.

The bunker has the same access permissions as the old general.

'Hiding' a forum doesn't prevent the google ads from being rendered on its pages. The adsense javascript runs on the page, scanning its content and serving appropriate ads. Very easy for them to still determine if there is inappropriate content on the page, regardless of whether the google search engine crawler can see it or not.

So, one option is to turn off guests viewing the general, lock the thing so no new threads or posts can be made, but it can still be read. Then, little by little, validated threads could then me moved slowly one by one into this new forum.

Ok, but how does Adsense know what the images are, unless of course it then refers back to the Google database created by the search bot? If this is the case, why do the Adsense apps not report back to the search bot?

Anyway, does this help, or is it too old?

Closing the General rips the heart out of the Forum.

I can't say that over the last few months (certainly since Niall's most recent warning) there has been much in the way of 'so called' porn images.

If the General has to cleaned of 'inappropriate material' going back to the dawn of time to get it back up , so be it.

I would be happy to volunteer to help look at all those tits an asses if it would be possible.

This is a serious offer of assistance btw...

Maybe we have a Spy from Google in the mains....with newbie access?

You posting a pic of your cocks probably didnt help either

I always thought that the general should have been hidden from non-members anyway. If people want to log on to check what we're saying about football fine, but the general is too personal.

I understand what your saying in relation to adds though!

This wouldn't be such a big task if enough people volunteered to do the checking. I'm sure giving certain members access to the hidden General wouldn't be to hard just like the mad forum. They wouldn't even have to give people the access to move thread just set up a system that people could approve threads and pm the links to a modmin who could transfer them over without having to check them all individually.

Are we all right in the assumption that seems to be being made that most of the inappropriate content is historical rather than current?

I blame El Duce. The new guy.

He posted a naked chick and a cock in a pad lock on the same day.

Lets get him

I confess to the penis lock which I was fairly punished for, but I have NOT posted a naked lady. Not that it makes much difference though. I'm sorry!

TBF the Bunker is pretty funny. All the Muppets are tripping over each other to be the starter for all the big threads. It's going to be a very busy evening in there!!

Thanks Weaste, will look into those.

Just a suggestion, if what you say about adsense is the case, that it knows what the content of threads are, etc. When Google turn it back on for you, would it not be sensible to make sure that all moderators and admins have adblock installed and turned on for the website as they are inspecting the general forum, otherwise they will get served adverts and the problem will re-occur?

Yeah that's a possibility Weaste, I'll pass that on to the mods.

Does Google AdSense's revenue it brings in cover the costs of hosting this site?

Gutted for Niall but I would be simply to lazy to crawl through the old General Forum in a mission to find threads worth being saved if I were him. Too much work and not really worth it, given it's a football forum.

Or maybe the General Forum could be uploaded as an archive on a new plattform so that it wouldn't be associated with Redcafe anymore? Thereby there wouldn't be a connection anymore and Google could put its ads back.

You just need to be methodical, and make sure only one person at a time is doing it. Most of the stuff in there is total trash, and I'd expect most threads are under three or four pages, so the best way to start is to do a search showing threads with say less than 120 posts. From that list it should be quite clear what's total bullshit and what might just need reviewing. All you do then is go, click, click, click, click....... on the check boxes and hit delete. Rinse and repeat. You could get rid of several thousand in an hour. Then you do the same, upping the post count.

I can see your post count going below 50k if that happens.

I think your guess is quite wrong, but carry on trying to be clever. Most of my posts are not in that forum for a start, and you also in your cleverness fail completely in missing a quite important fact. This account was not registered in Jun 2001, and its post count doesn't go back to then either, the name, join date, and post count was manually configured because the original WeasteDevil account was deleted. Any posts from that account are not linked to this account. So, guess again!

We have a new general now, just delete the old one and carry on, we've managed happily enough so far.

This seems a bit suspicious to me. I know, from browsing other clubs' fora, that the General is actually very mild in content comparitively. And I don't just mean regarding images alone. Again, this crackdown by Google just doesn't add up.
