Gary Lineker interviews Juan Mata

Pretty much. Always impeccably dressed too. Plus I've never seen or read anything about him ever having a girlfriend. It just seems likely he might be gay. There has to be at least some gay footballers in the Premier League. He would be high up on any shortlist.
Google Evelina Kamph (what a name )

What a great guy. I was pretty gutted when I realised Herrera had a girlfriend and it meant he and Juan weren't a couple.

A child too. Which makes me think that Mata is just a very secluded chap when it comes to his relationships. Ander only started posting images of his child and girlfriend/wife on Instagram very recently.

Pah. Looks like my gaydar might be a bit off.
Still possible that it's just a classic cover up case.

If we're talking hypotheticals, Mata would've been perfect as the first openly gay footballer in the PL, everyone loves him unconditionally so he'll show others that it's not that scary. By the way it's so strange that there are none - considering how well-adjusted is gay community in the Western countries. I can understand why gay footballers don't come out in, for example, Russia or Latin America where the homophobic ideas are still dominant, but in the UK or continental Europe?

Been discussed in an interesting thread a while back. Homophobia is much less prevalent than it was in the UK but it hasn't gone away completely and there's a good chance a footballer would get additional stick from the terraces (and other footballers) if they came out, so I can understand why they might decide it isn't worth the hassle. It is a shame though. Gay kids need more sporting role models IMO.

I'm ashamed to admit I thought the same at one point (ashamed as it's none of my business, but also because it seemed a trite assumption to make about a footballer mainly because he seems pretty thoughtful and is cultured) but yeah he's got a bird.

He would be the perfect player to come out as well because no one would ever give him any shit because of how lovable he is.

Great interview, hope we see more of him once he retires (still some way off) as he's a standout personality amongst the usual grunting oafs we have in the prem.

Really hope we can win a big trophy or two whilst he's here.

Lallana, Ronaldo etc etc

This thread took a strange turn. I honestly couldn't care less about anyone's sexuality. Hopefully there will come a time where the need to come out isn't necessary. It may have something to do with the potential for visiting some countries in the Middle East, where I have read that homosexuality is still actually a crime punishable to different degrees up to and including death. All that said, funny that just because the man is clean and cultured, doesn't flaunt his women, the stereotype is "he must be gay". We are all still a bit backwards in our thinking on this I suppose.

And to turn back to the topic...yes, Mata is great to have on our side. He's almost a poor man's Messi with some of his wizardry on the pitch.

Edited. Is that better?

Why did you put quotes around "need" and "come out"?

A bit of the Spanish Beckham about him without the media circus. Love this man. I have never accepted or agreed with anyone that claims footballers are / should be considered as role-models for anything other than their football skills. But he is the one exception for me.

I think he was implying that both of those terms are bullshit and shouldn't be needed because who gives a feck.

Yeah, kinda sorta that too. Tired of all the division and identity politics of everything. I don't give a crap. Do what you want to do between consenting adults and no need to parade around and make a statement about it. The vast majority of us don't care. No need for "gaydar".

Spot on. I'm fully in the who gives a feck camp.

Don't think that it was a serious suggestion in the first place (re: Mata being gay), all part of the jokingly image that Mata has on here, with 95% of heterosexual redcafe members being sexually aroused by him

Coming out is a big deal for any individual, whether you give a crap or not.

In an ideal world, sure. We don't live in an ideal world. Why pretend that we are?

Fake it until we make it. I don't give a feck about gay bi transsexual or heterosexual. I really don't. And I think everyone on this forum I'm married with a girl and a boy. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest if either one was gay or bi or transsexual or hetero. If their happy I'm happy. That's my view.

Absolutely Love him. Hope he becomes a manager one day.

And, may I add, his taste in women is very good too...

Mine too. I'm just objecting to the idea that because you and me don't give a feck then nobody else does and someone who happens to be gay doesn't face any challenges or tough decisions when it comes to making their sexuality public. Or "coming out" as the other bloke referred to it. It's still a very big deal and will be for a while longer. If/when it's not a big deal then great, the world will be a better place. We're not there yet, though.

But the more people that don't care surely makes it easier.

Perhaps you could just point them all out with your gaydar?

All of them? Seems a big ask. Not sure that would work with my schedule.

Back in the real world, you keep on not giving a crap and gay people will continue to find the decision when and how to come out (sorry, "come out") as one of the biggest challenges they'll face.

I find the entire sexuality argument non existent to me.
What if I was gay. Would I be any different. No I wouldn't be.

I'd still be Billy Blaggs.
Apart from everyone knowing I have a wife and two kids(one that killed my stove) would it matter?

In the real world, I have two family members who are gay. They don't march around and make a big deal of it. Those that feel the need to do so, fine I don't care. My wife and I lost a good friend years ago to Aids. So I'm not living in a hetero bubble here my friend. It's just my opinion, and it's all it is. Live and let live is how I roll. That said, I come here to talk, read, and learn about my club and football in general. I'm sorry I even waded into this. Peace.

He and Ander need to stop lying to themselves.

Or perhaps we need to stop lying to ourselves about our own subconscious homoerotic football thoughts and just accept that Mata and Herrera have fit birds and probably roger them vigorously on a regular basis!

In all reality, the gay footballer is as likely to be a butch bruiser (Lawro...) on the pitch as he is a 'cultured', handsome foreigner.
