Bolton Wanderers centre-back Gary Cahill has indicated that he is ready to leave the Reebok Stadium, saying that he wants a "big club" move one day. He has been linked with Manchester United and Tottenham in particular in the past.

The 24-year-old has impressed greatly for Bolton over the past couple of years and scored five goals in 29 appearances last season to help haul Owen Coyle's side to Premier League safety. The defender was thought to be in contention for Fabio Capello's World Cup squad until an arm injury ruled him out for much of the season. He has since been awarded his first England cap in September against Bulgaria.

Manchester United were said to be considering a £15million bid for Cahill over the summer. Meanwhile, Tottenham have also been linked with the centre-back, given the long-term injury doubts over both Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate .

Both Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will be encouraged by Cahill's comments yesterday which indicated that he is looking for a move.

According to The Star on Sunday, Cahill said, “I am an ambitious lad who wants to play at the top of my game. Who knows what the future holds?

“At this minute I am concentrating on playing well for Bolton but hopefully, I will play for a top club one day.”

Cahill will have impressed Redknapp again yesterday, having played in Bolton's 4-2 victory over Tottenham.

He's a good player but I can't see why we would sign him with Evans and Smalling already on the books.

Spurs would make sense.

Think he's quality, on a par with Evans and Smalling, but no space for him here. Tottenham or Arsenal, even Chelsea would be a good move for him.

He's a nothing player, a Villa reject who's found his level at Bolton. If it wasn't for his passport he'd rightly be dismissed as the average defender he truly is.

He's been linked with a move away from Bolton for a couple of seasons now, the fact it hasn't materialised is a better indication of his quality than what Coyle/Megson/and the Bolton club would have us believe.

Good summary

He's much more gifted than your typical defender in this league WireRed, technically and with his all round defensive game. Not quite Rio Ferdinand but maybe if he's lucky he could get to Woodgate level.

He'll be lucky to even get near the level of someone like Phil Jones tbh, a guy who's about 7 years his junior and twice the player defensively and technically already.

Still can't understand why Villa sold him to Bolton. Bad decision by Martin O'Neill, however if we're looking for a English Defender we should go for Phil Jones. Quality prospect.

He's miles ahead of those two at the moment.

He's ahead of Smalling in terms of experience (not in potential in my opinion though), but in no way at all is he "miles ahead" of Jonny Evans. If anything, he is miles behind.

I suspect you'll be proven wrong.

He's miles ahead of those two at the moment.

He's better than Smalling at the minute but he's not better than Evans and certainly not "miles ahead".

You don't think he's better than Smalling ATM?

And how's Evans been playing (in a much better side) this last season and a half?

As everyone has said, he is ahead of Smalling right now but to say that about Evans given what the two of them have achieved is laughable.

Your own manager rated Smalling very highly don't forget.

Evans would get found out playing for a team like Bolton.

Hmm...I could've sworn he had a magnificent loan spell at Sunderland and him being one of the reasons they stayed up. Yup he definitely got found out there.

He is just having a bad spell at the moment. He'll be back and he has a lot of time to improve.

Did I say Sunderland? I'm talking about BOLTON. If he were to go to Bolton now, he wouldn't do as well as Cahill. Now you mention Sunderland, he seriously wasn't as good as redcafe legend tells it. A player that has achieved a status of a potential world beater on the caf for virtually nothing. 'The main reason Sunderland stayed up' is both bollocks and not true.

Unbelieveable backtracking. You said a "team like Bolton" so the Sunderland comparison is more than valid. Also, his performances there are not exaggerated at all. He was very very good.

You're either deliberately wumming or pretending to know about something that you actually don't. Either way you're coming off a little daft Spammy.

I'd say that Cahill is a better defender than Evans at the moment, but not by a lot. You have to remember that Evans is playing with much better defenders than Cahill.

Personally i think Smalling has more potential but Cahill is a good young defender and looks like he could play at a better level than Bolton. I also don't know why Villa sold him, whenever he played for them he looked very good.

I never come off daft. Backtracking or not, he isn't better than Cahill in my eyes and it's certainly not laughable to suggest so.

More backtracking. No one is saying it's laughable to say Cahill is better, they were laughing because Storey said Cahill was "miles ahead" of Evans.

Most Sunderland fans wanted them to break their transfer record to try to tempt us to sell him. And I have no doubt they would've if we were willing to sell.

Think hes a decent player. On par / a bit better than Evans.

Definitely better than Smalling at current level, but Smalling's potential makes him more important.

Wenger's had a look at one or two English centre backs. If the stories are to be believed he was prepared to pay for Smalling. He was interested in Curtis Davies but would not pay the asking price which Villa did. I can't see him signing Cahill either but for me he is a better player than Kozcileny, Squillaci or what they had as back up last season. Will have to await to see him Djorou develops now he is free of injury.
