Gareth Bale retires | Begins his golf career next month

Was a very good player in his prime. His mix of pace and power was something else.

One of the most underappreciated footballers of all time. Staggering list of achievements and I don't remember too many players shitting all over the PL the way he did at spurs before he went to Real.

One of the most exciting players I have ever watched

I will forever wonder how things might have been different for Moyes/United if they'd succeeded in signing him that summer (or indeed back in... 2006?.. from Southampton)

Just realized Gareth Bale is Welsh for Golf Ball.

Think it was only Madrid fans that underappreciated him really.

Fair enough. No point destroying his body any further. 3 La Ligas and 5 CLs. Not bad.

It's weird that Bale has retired before Messi and Ronaldo. By the time Bale reached his peak, Messi and Ron had been world class for years.

A great player in terms of producing match winning moments. Often not so good outside of that. But all in all, he had a fine career for Spurs, Wales and Madrid (where excellent players can wilt)

I don't think he's underappreciated at all.

He was rank awful in Qatar and you can tell he’s been phoning it in the past 18 months or so.

I'd argue that Ronaldo retired a few weeks ago after that interview and upon signing for a club in the Saudi league.

His last couple of years at spurs were incredible. Was single handed my destroying teams.
Five champions leagues as well is amazing. Has any player won more?

He’s brilliant and criminally under appreciated at times. One of the top four or five players in the world when in his prime

One of the best big game players of all time. His body and mindset were not quite Ronaldo-esque, but his talent and ability to step up when it matters most was incredible. Probably also scored the best CL-final goal of all time, even better than Zidane.

186 goals, 139 assists in 554 games

Played the bulk of his career at the highest level.

Quite impressive when you think he could have done even more..

Still remember when he burst onto the scene.. as Micah richards would say. That game when spurs played inter I think it was and he was rapid down that wing.

How much is he worth?

Woodward would have tried to sign him this summer

Fantastic player. No one could have ever imagined he's have become the player he did.

Underrated player. Genuinely one of the best players I've ever seen.

Just a beast in his prime and still a handful in flashes towards the end.

Greatest Welsh player of all time. I still remember how good he was in his last few years at Spurs and his start at Real Madrid. Don't like using the word world class when everyone gets called it these days but he was without doubt that time an absolutely superstar

His record of Spurs never winning when he started made me larf, but he certainly proved those initial doubts wrong. Beast of a player in his prime and a shame he was so under appreciated at Real.

We should have signed him from Southampton. Not his loss as he got his move to Real and won trophies there. We could have gotten our new 11.

He can be proud of what he achieved for himself as a football player, the trophies he won at club level and also playing at the WC with his Welsh NT, something our Giggsy would certainly be envious about.
