Games Released in the Next Month

Did you enjoy oblivion?

I've been playing that for weeks now.

I think the levelling system is shit and makes the game too hard on the default settings if you play "naturally".

If you learn to efficiently level your character though... I did it, with a lot of patience and am now mesmerized by the depth of that game in all aspects, specially lore. I've been exploring and questing for 3 weeks now and I don't seem anywhere near the end. So much to do.

I always lag a few years behind games, so only when I finish this I'll buy Fallout 3.

GT5 and PES 11 I'll get them soon though, the later only if the online cheating is sorted.

I used to certainly look at Edge's high ratings as somewhat of a luxury but not so much anymore. 10/10 for the likes of GTA IV and Halo 3 really do bemuse me, they're a strange reviewer. Or they've could have just gone down the route of the commercial reviewer and succuming to advertising revenue tip-offs ala GameSpot and IGN.

That's interesting, a lot of gamers claimed that Oblivion was dumbed down from it's predecessor Morrowind, I certainly share that opinion anyway. But if you're a novice to that style of RPG then I suppose it may seem daunting to get into.

Reason I asked was because the same team responsible for Oblivion also did Fallout 3, and it certainly shows: some people simply dub Fallout 3 as simply a futuristic, post-apocalyptical oblivion with guns..not that it's a bad thing though. It's just that those who didnt like Oblivion also didnt see any appeal in Fallout 3, vice versa with those who did like it.

Late 90's early 00's was when they finally started accepting the little incentives on the scale of everyone else.

Correct. One word, consoles.

Which is basically a dumbed down Oblivion.

Well I'm having an extremely easy game now, but I really power-levelled to an extreme... I simply can't die, so in that sense it's probably dumbed down.

The "normal" levelling though it's counterintuitive and can make the game unplayable if you don't study the levelling system properly (and recognize what are obvious faults). Because of that attribute multiplier thing, every time you level, you can either maximize your attributes by level 35-40 or you can have them only increased by an average of 10-15 points. Considering your opponents level efficiently regradlessly of you doing it or not, you end up a lot weaker than them at later levels. Instead of feeling more powerful I was running away from lonely bandits when I was at level 20. Had to start over after reading a levelling guide.

That was the daunting part about it, having to study the levelling system to be able to make a strong character that could last through the game. If it weren't for the attribute multiplying system this wouldn't be needed. Instead, I ended up selecting my main skills as minor and major skills the ones that I use little but can control, so I only levelled when I had gained the multipliers.

interesting post this, and something i wish i'd known ages ago!

Oblivion had always seemed right up my street but i too found myself struggling with basic enemies the further i got into the game. i started over several times but came up against the same issues and gave up in the end - might have to check out one of these level guides and give it another bash now

I adored Fallout 3 btw, i can't wait for New Vegas

If you ever want to get back to it (and I strongly recommend it as this game as so much to offer for RPG lovers) I recommend reading this

Oblivion:Efficient Leveling - UESPWiki

I chose the +5/+5/+ 1 route (luck is tremendously useful in this game) and roughly followed the advice posted on point 9, to avoid the boredom of being locked in a room fighting scamps. It works fine.

Any other tips you want just ask, I've mastered this process by now. Maximize Endurance first, if you want maximum health.

Will be getting Fifa11, Fallout New Vegas, LBP2 and COD Black Ops.

Must say though that im not particularly excited about playing any of them because they are all sequels.

There are not enough good new titles about.

Not much on that list that really excites me tbh

I wasn't overly impresed with either the footy demos in fact i've not invested in a footy game for 2-3 years as i've not found one i like

After reading an atricle in Edge about Enslaved a month or so ago i was looking forward to playing that one but I have to say though i was underwhelmed by the demo - reckon i'll rent rather than buy

Fallout will be awesome though

Which all of the games discussed are for PC as well?
I know AC3, COD7 and FIFA 11 are for PC. What bout the others discussed here?

Which is basically a dumbed down Oblivion.

You think so? I mean I'd certainly agree that Fallout 3 was dumbed down from the previous Fallout games but to call it a dumbed-down Oblivion is a tad bit unfair I think. For starters the levelling system and proficiencies isn't any less complicated than Oblivion's, it just perhaps has a more approachable skin to it. I would agree though that Fallout 3 would seem a more approachable game due to its more modern setting and not the Fantasy D&D settings which seems to repel quite a few of the casual crowd. Oh and it has guns instead of 'magic nd shit'

I really liked Fallout 3, but I prefer Oblivion. I am hoping that Arcania will scratch that particular itch.

I might switch on my PS3 and download the FIFA11 demo. Since I've not played a game for ages causing me forget how LIVE or whatever it's called works, are demos free to download? Actually come to think of it, is PS3 Live or whatever it's called free?

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, and HD Prince of Persia Collection, all released in 8 days.

:(

For me coming up there is

FIFA 11
Fallout: New Vegas
COD: Black Ops
Little Big Planet 2
Assassins Creed Brotherhood

Gonna leave a burning hole in my wallet.

I have 3 of these now.

Same here. I will probably pick up at least two of the three I just mentioned. I really enjoyed Assassin's Creed 2, but the screen tearing was diabolical. If they haven't sorted that out, I'll pass on Brotherhood.

Probably should be the other way around, but...

The Sly Collection in HD is out on Friday. I have never played these games before, what's the scoop?

I'm getting this, i only ever played Sly 3 so i can't say about the other two but basically...

You're a gang of thieves, a racoon, a diasbled turtle in a wheelchair, a hippo and a koala witch docor. It's all done in a weird film noir sort of style. The main gameplay is a 3D platformer a bit like Banjo Kazooie. There's some stealth bits thrown in there and combat of course, it's got a pretty good sense of humour about it as well.

It's the kind of game you don't see a lot of anymore, the classic over the top cartoony platformer. I really enjoyed Sly 3 and i'm looking forward to giving this a bash.

Thanks, sounds interesting. I might opt for the POP Trilogy instead, though.

I still have to finish NFS: Hot Pursuit and Fallout: New Vegas. And I own (but have yet to play), Red Dead Undead Nightmare, Burnout Paradise, and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

I can't help myself.

I haven't finished Resonance of Fate, and i bought that months ago! I just keep pushing it back down the pile. And at the minute GT5 has it's claws in me, i'm still only chapter 3 on Castlevania.

Really? You have a lot of fun ahead of you. It is only warming up.

Yeah, but GT as always is a game you can always put to the side and then pick up again, have a blast for 20 minutes, put down again, pick up again. It's like riding a bike really, you never forget how it works. I'm quite sure that if I tried Uncharted Drakes Fortune again I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of what I was doing or how to control it - what does that button do again? Ah - shit, dead. Start off at Chapter 13, what happened before exactly?

That's a good point there Weaste, I've actually forgotten what the hell was going on in Resonance of Fate (Nolan North is the lead in that game btw), but i remember this had just happened.

Only the Japanese.

Been playing the Sly trilogy and loving it, there's a huge difference between the first game and the other two. The first is a series of levels ala Banjo Kazooie (with time trials for each one, you can complete most of them in under a couple of minutes) and the other two are episodic, with each episode being in their own larger area with missions leading up to a big heist and a boss fight (about a couple of hours in each area if you go for the clue bottles and purchasing the upgrades).

The minigames are pretty shite though, probably better if i actually had Move but there you go.

Decent buy then?

I don't suppose you took the plunge with the POP trilogy?

I like it, and you can't complain with three for one. I've not gone for the POP one, probably will wait until after christmas as i've got to buy shit for other people at the minute!

I've just bought the digital download. First game i've bought using this method. A little annoyed it's no cheaper than getting a copy from a shop TBH.

Apparantly server cost's and bandwith are actually a lot more expensive than DVD's and their packaging.
