I've seen lots of threads concerning the quality of games for PS3 etc but as I cannot justify buying one of these to my missus (yes I am a mouse ) has anybody got experience/advice on games to get for a desk top

How old is your machine? What sort of games do you like to play?

If you like shooting stuff, have a decent high-end rig, you can't go very wrong with Call of Duty 4.

Just head to GameSpot, read the reviews and also download the demos before buying any.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is really good for FPS

But seriously it depends on what kind of game your into. COD4 is immense. Crysis is pretty good as well.

It may be 10 years old, but its still the best game to be released on the pc

Good shout. The other day I played a 4v4 deathmatch against the computer. Old, but still great. :)

RTSs aren't for everyone though, generally.

True, but for those who do like their RTS' this has to be one of the best. In terms of game play, there is no other like it. I used to play it online, it was immense. Although I haven't done that in about a year.

Don't you have to play AOEII on Gamespy now? I remember playing that on MSN Gaming Zone years ago.

Nah IGZones, or at least it was when I last played. I might re-install it actually

aoe1,2,3

prince of persia:sands of time and the two thrones
fifa 2007,2008
hidden & dangerous 2
need for speed : most wanted
call of duty 4

unreal tournament 3

Crysis... yeah.

You don't need Vista to have Directx10 effects in this game. Damn cheating Microsoft.

Get WinMAME - the arcade emulator that you can play all the old arcade games with.

Or have a wander over to worldofspectrum.org for a bit of 80's retrofun

Can anyone recommend a good mystery, adventure a la Myst? No action required, just an immersive environment. Something spooky a plus.

Bugaboo the Flea is really getting on my tits. I've been trying to complete that fecker since I was seven.

Europa Universalis III with the Napoleon's Ambition expansion is a great strategy game especially if you're interested in history. It's basically the only game I play.

feck! If he can afford a PC to play that on, he should be able to find a few pennies for a PS3 or XBox.

er weastie -its not me and pennies thats the problem - its my missus allowing me to expend those pennies :o

I've got a Intel core 2Quad Processor 4 gb of ram and a GF 8600 graphics card

Haven't really played any games for years - Quake and Flight sim were my favs years back

PC has a Core 2 quad processor, 4 GB ram and a GF 8600 graphics card and a 500GB HD- out of choice I prefer the shooting stuff anything more complex makes my brain start saying "Does not compute" :o

A personal favourite of mine, miles better than any other game in the same genre. How quick could you castle?

It depends on what map. Just for fun I had a build where I could be imperial by 19:30ish. I used to play online though and was a known player for a while when I had too much time on my hands. If you don't play online, then do it. You may think you are good but some of the guys online will kill you without even reaching second gear. Although to be fair theres not many great players around since aoe3 was released and the zone closed down.

thanks Smashed - will take your advice and include this one

Do it, its brilliant. Its still my favourite game of all time and I have a 360.

Feck, I am definitely getting geekier the older I get :nervous:

I played online a bit, was part of a clan and all. I don't play if it's not online, else it's just a huge step down and a waste of time. imperial by 19:30 is incredible, I would love to know what your secret is! I was never that quick myself; a good game would be castling in 17 min. What was your civ of choice?

What clan were you in? You know the michi map? I do it on that. Its basically a map where you have trees between you and your enemy so you dont have to worry about being rushed. I could never do it on open map I think that would be impossible. I haven't played in about a year though online, so I dread to think what times I would be hitting now! I might still have records though I am not sure
