Gabriel Paulista

Heard good things about him, better than what we have? If so why aren't we going after him if he is available at that price instead of carrying on with the rubbish we currently have.

He's hardly proven at the highest level. He's been with in Europe, playing for Villareal for a season and half. I would say at this point Musacchio is much more proven.
I'm surprised they're paying so much for him. But he might come good.

Interesting signing at reportedly 13.5 million pounds plus Campbell.

Haven't seen much but they needed reinforcement there.

Joel Campbell took that fans advice and got out while he could

Reading a bit on reddit and the villareal fans on there seem to really rate him. I bloody hope we've not let Arsenal sign a good centre back in January while we are left holding our dicks.

We are signing Dragovic mate. He's the shit.

Because we only have eyes for fvcking Hummels SMH

He looks like a really good player. Skillful, tall and very quick. He'll suit Arsenal's style.

Don't know too much about Gabriel but from what I've read he isn't the finished article but certainly has good potential to develop into a very good player. Signing him now will be good for him, gives him this season to find his feet and settle in and then hopefully push on next season. Though with the number of injuries we've had he might be required sooner rather than later!

Koscielny's probably my favourite player in Arsenal's team (just love his style of play). They said on commentary the other day he might have got through playing with pain for these injuries, but are you expecting him still to be in and out in future years? Is it one injuring reoccurring or all different kinds? Apologies, I love him as a player, but I don't follow Arsenal injury updates closely enough to know if it's the same or different problems keeping him out.

He has tendinitis in both of his Achilles, the problem with that kind of injury is sometimes you can never shake it off. I remember reading that simply resting is the best way to help but even that isn't guaranteed to work, Vermaelen also suffered from that and he was out for months as a result. I think Wenger said one of his Achilles had healed up around Nov time so am hoping his other is better but it could flare up again. We knew about this in the summer so scandalous really that we didn't bring in a senior CB in the summer.

Got a pretty big send off at Villarreal, a bit weird considering he was only there 18 months, but they must have liked him!
He's a virtually unknown player. Tim Vickery reckons almost no one in Brazil knows him as he left quite early. Vickery says he only saw this guy play once. Looks to me like the kind of defender who does the job well without a fuss. The discreet yet effective kind. Let's hope he turns out to be a good player.

He was voted defender of the year twice in a row in whichever league he was playing in whilst in Brazil.

Getting him for less than his release clause. :wenger: What a guy.

Wenger confirming it's more or less done.

You must just be buzzing you've actually bought a defender, hope he does well for you. You've looked a lot better recently and this can only help.

Good signing for Arsenal.

Watched him quite a lot in 2014 because I was spying on Mateo Musacchio as a transfer target for United, but honestly speaking Paulista outshone him in the second part of the 2013/ 2014 Liga season where Villarreal had one of the best defenses around as he settled into the Liga.

IIRC his anticipation was top class and that natural defensive instinct is something you can't teach. Decent physicality, good presence, and quite tenacious, never shies out of a tackle.

Although he can distribute the ball from the back pretty effectively, only knock(s) would be his occasional lack confidence in possession which is rather strange for a Brazilian footballer. Seemed flustered a bit to easily at times in the pace of a press and hauled it long, also broke the integrity of the defense with a mental lapse, lack of communication or indiscipline on a few occasions. But apart from that, he doesn't possess any glaring weakness.

Maybe Wenger can sort the couple of deficiencies out and coach him up. Wouldn't be surprising if he turns out into a Koscielny or even Miranda caliber of defender in a couple of seasons. All the basic ingredients are there.

"I am arriving at a big club and the fans can expect to find a Gabriel with a great will to help everyone. Not just thinking of me as an individual, because to me that is not important. I care more about helping the team and my team-mates. I want to help everyone, so the fans can expect a Gabriel that on the field has a lot of will to be able to help the team win important things."

Not sure about this speaking in the third person nonsense.

If he ends up becoming a great player we'll all be moaning, but I think in a position where we need proven quality, if you buy cheap you buy twice.

I'd rather carry on with what we have and improve the defence in the summer than buy a stop-gap who takes up space in the squad (a bit like Rojo may turn out to be).

This guy sounds and appears to be Koscielny mkII (raw, rangy and quick).

If he ends up becoming a CB of Koscielny's quality then us Gooners will be very very pleased.
