Gaa 2013

It's unreal, lem8sh. From u14 to u21, I doubt there's a better structure around. The only problem we have is that many of them prefer the hurling and opt for that when the inevitable choice has to be made, not to mention the soccer. It might take ten years of consistent underage success for this attitude to change as there's no doubting the talent is there.

What's the story with Kerry anyway? Why is there underage structure failing in the last few years?

Hurling will always be number one in Tipperary. It has such a rich heritage and the passion for it in the county is up there with Kerry in the football. Look at all the main hurling counties in Ireland: Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Clare, Limerick, Galway, Offaly, Wexford, Dublin and Antrim. Most of them share a border with Tipperary. Unreal, really.

The talent just isn't here, simple as that.

Dublin playing brilliant football.

0-4:0-0 up after 15 minutes

Love kicking the feck out of west Meath. Great result.

Dubs 1-22 West Meath 0-9

Haven't seen it yet so I don't know who the best performers were. Cracking result though.

1-22 is fine scoring. Westmeath aren't great though so I wouldn't be getting too carried away with that result.

As I said earlier in the week, I still think Dublin are the closest team to Donegal in terms of physicality and panache. No other teams in the country can mix the two as well as those two. I'd love to see them going head-to-head in Croker later in the summer. It would be some game.

Who do you fancy in the televised games today, gents? I haven't looked into the football fixture too much to be honest but I am quietly confident about Waterford's chances in the hurling. Clare are expected to go well by a lot of people this year but I think they are still on the young side and Championship hurling is a huge step-up from Waterford Crystal hurling and National League games.

Waterford have their fair share of youth too mind, but they also have lads that are hugely experienced. Players such as Kevin Moran, Michael Walsh and Seamus Prendergast have all played in Munster and All-Ireland Finals and complement the youthful talent of Paraic Mahony, Jake Dillon and Jamie Barron brilliantly. Waterford's defence is very solid and they kept Cork and Tipperary's attack at bay when they faced off in the league.

I don't have Waterford as outsiders today and I think the 7/4 on offer in the bookies is great value. Waterford love Thurles and their forwards will relish the space there today. I have question marks about the Clare defence and think Waterford's attack could expose them today. I'm looking forward to a (hopefully) good game either way.

The Clare v Waterford match is going to be a good one alright. I'm going to go with Clare, purely down to them having a lot more pace than what Waterford has all over the pitch, they're the most skillful team between the two as well, they're a joy to watch when they get going.

Davy Fitz who'll know a fair bit about the Waterford set up will have them chomping at the bit as well. You could see some of Davy's never say die attitude in their display against Cork in the League, they never gave up. I think what they did in that match will stand to them today if there's nothing in it in the closing stages.

I remember the game against Donegal in 2011 on the way to the final, such a physically demanding game. Really scrappy one too.

Happy days! Great second half. Not too confident going up against donegal though to be honest.

Clare 2-20 : 1-15 Waterford

A handy enough win for Clare in the end and deserving winners. They've Cork up next now and if it's anything like their last meeting in the league it'll be a cracker.

The best goal I've ever seen on a GAA field was scored by a teammate of mine in an u14 divisional football final. The ball comes floating across in front of the goal about 14 yards out and up he leaps, alá Rooney against City, and scissor-kicks it into the top corner. We ended up winning the match by two points so it turned out to be the winning goal.

Over ten years later, he's still fecking dining out off that goal, the bollocks!

I bet he got shite for it, especially by the oul ones

If he did that in Strabane he would have gotten beat of the pitch!

 Doesn't take much in Strabane

naheali's Tipp are in action tomorrow down in the Gaelic grounds against a young enough and promising Limerick team. Tipp should win it but I'm not to sure it'll be as easy for them as some are making it out. I wouldn't be surprised if Limerick are there or there about's right up until the final whistle.

Offaly are taking on Kilkenny in Tullamore, easy enough to predict the outcome of that one.

The Wexford v Dublin match in Wexford this evening at 7pm should be an interesting enough match though. Wexford could cause an upset there easy enough.

There's zero build-up or hype in the lead up to this match, TBP. I was talking to the father on the phone last night and he said it's shocking how little fanfare there is about it. Go back even five years ago, let alone previous decades, and it would be the only talk around the towns, Championship hurling on the Sunday. From reading another forum, it's apparently even worse in Limerick.

I think the GAA have to take a long hard look at themselves in relation to the state of the game and how it's gradually falling from prominence within Irish society. Of course you'd always have your hardcore GAA men and women who'd never fall out of love with the game, but the folk who could take it or leave it are now leaving it. And for good too. It's €30 for a stand ticket for Sunday for Tipperary v Limerick. It's a scandal. The club at home have taken their lowest applications for tickets possibly ever (there'll still be a fair few who'll turn up on the day without tickets and pay at the gates, of course), and this is from a club which is synonymous with travelling support for Tipperary games, among the top three clubs in the county in this regard. I doubt the attendance will top 20,000 on Sunday, which for a Munster Championship semi-final, is atrocious.

For the match itself, everyone expects Tipperary to win cosily but I'd be wary of an Limerick ambush, too. I know two of the Limerick lads that are starting on Sunday from playing hurling at colleges level with them and both are quietly confident they'll put it up to Tipperary. As the old adage goes, "Limerick never fear Tipp!".

I'll be shouting on the Yellowbellies in this evening's game. I was reared on hurling when the likes of Offaly, Wexford, Limerick and Clare were at the pinnacle of the game and any number of teams could win an All-Ireland. I'd love for them all to improve significantly to make the hurling championship great again as it's dying on its knees at the moment. Amazing that the state of hurling has changed so dramatically since the mid-1990s.

Dublin had their chances tonight. Glad to see both sides get another run at it...they'll have to be better than that to take on Kilkenny.

I reckon the cats will beat Offaly by 20 points. Louth & Monaghan to win by 5 in their respective games. Tipp to beat Limerick. From a football pov, its the worst weekend so far in the championship. The hurling is only getting going now.

Aye, from a football perspective it's pretty poor alright. I'd be interested to see how Monaghan fare as they could well find themselves in an Ulster final against Donegal in a few weeks time.

As for the hurling, Kilkenny will beat Offaly a score a man - if not by more - and Tipperary should take Limerick by between 5 and 10 points. No great hurling games on today either to be honest but at least we're off the mark anyway and the games will only get better from here on. I'm especially worried about Tipperary's forward-line for the championship as there's question marks over too many of them. They should be good enough to take the likes of Limerick but I don't fancy them to beat the likes of Kilkenny, which is what we should be aiming for. Time will tell I suppose.

Any bets on the time of the first Kilkenny goal? I reckon they'll have netted inside the first ten minutes, possibly even five.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see the first score of the match being a goal.

* EDIT: I should have had a bet!

Kilkenny 0-00 Offaly 1-00 after one minute.

Offaly 2-06 Kilkenny 0-11 at half-time.

The referee is being particularly harsh on Offaly I think with some dubious frees being awarded to Kilkenny in front of goal. Good game so far, although I doubt Offaly can keep this level of performance up.

Terrible from Tipperary today, absolutely shocking. Well done to Limerick, though. Thoroughly deserved victory.

Tipperary, as I said, have too many lads with question marks hanging over them, and they are carrying too many passengers. I thought they'd do enough to get over Limerick, but my God, were they exposed today. Hopefully this will be the wake-up call that they need now.

Great win by Limerick.

I know I harp on about the added time but 2 minutes in that game was a joke, Maher's injury alone took up well over 2, other niggly stoppages and a rake of subs.

Deserved winners though. Blows Munster wide open.

I think the winners of the other semi-final will win Munster. Limerick fought hard and were obviously much hungrier than Tipperary today, but Clare - and to a lesser extent Cork - possess similar levels of work-rate, and both have superior hurlers to Limerick. That other semi-final is going to be a hum-dinger.

Delighted for Limerick, they fought like terriers for that win. A Clare and Limerick Munster final now would be brilliant not alone for Munster but for the game in general.

Kilkenny's dodgy back line earlier against Offaly might be a cause of concern for them as well, if they put in a performance like they did at the back today against a Galway team or forward line that's firing on all cylinders they'll be there for the taking that's for sure.

It was a good weekend of hurling to be fair.
