Gaa 2013

Our ladies won the Leinster title today. Were 4-5 0-5 up at HT but didn't score for AGES in the second half. Thought that Seneschalstown were going to pick us off one point at a time. At one stage, they had us back to 6/7 points but our lassies scored a fifth and that was that. Its their second provincial title but sterner tests await now. Carnacon (Mayo), Termon (Donegal) [surprisingly enough] and St Vals (Cork). All good teams there now.

Yeah I agree. The amount of players that were asking the officials why fouls were given and that. It was much too stop/start and it's a game that the general fans dont fully understand. I think I saw an aussie lad get clotheslined at one stage and nothing given at all. It used to be great for fighting but that's gone now.

The shinty game is taking place this weekend too TBP.

Those who don't want to watch it shouldn't bother. It's clear enough that the players want to play in it and take it pretty seriously. It's getting big enough crowds and sponsorship to keep it going so what's the problem.

Of course there's going to be instances of bad reffing and players not understanding the rules at times given the very fact it's only played once every two years. I just don't get the calls for it to be scrapped when it's not doing anyone any harm. Just let those who want to watch it watch it and those who want to play in it play in it.

Also, on the fighting, you always see more in the second test especially if the Aussies are behind.

I'll watch the second test so but I found it very underwhelming on Saturday. Close to boring in fact. That Anthony Pilkington did really well though. Bulked up since his recent debut too!
 
I like the Rules but thought the weekend was the poorest game Ireland have won. Until the Aussies made a go of it in the third quarter, it was a walk in the park. Up to this year, the results have been remarkably close. 8 series each, Ireland winning 18-16 on matches and Ireland winning by about 52 points.

The first match was so uncompetitive for so long. I hope the Aussies make a go of it next time out, but I'm not sure if they're equipped to do so.

Incidentally, I think it was a Laoisman who scored Ireland's 2,000th point [since 1984] - Ross Munnelly.

It's such a pity that the Aussies are so uncomfortable with the round ball as that really is the key difference. Kicking and catching it are where Ireland excelled.

What I'd love to see is a series where the first game is as-is, but the second is played with an AR ball, but no tackle. That would be a truer compromise. Get the Aussies to being back their best team and both teams go for it.

I don't know man. Our lads wouldn't be able to hold or kick their ball for shit. That ball takes years to become competent at.
 
I couldn't believe Niall Donoghue was gone when I heard it yesterday evening. Galway is in shock, particularly here in Gort, Kilbeacanty and the surrounding area. He was a sound lad whom it appeared had a lot of things going for him and was a genuinely class hurler. I'll never forget his display at wing back for Galway last year when they trounced Kilkenny in the Leinster Final. Feck it anyways....

May he rest in peace.

 
It has to stop we're losing hundreds of friends, brothers, sisters, cousins ,mothers and fathers every year its heartbreaking stuff. The government needs to address this issue, really address it.

A mates wife had started an organisation that was going around schools with trained councilors giving group and one on one sessions. All they wanted was expenses and they couldn't get it. The schools of course didn't have the budget either.

Really sad and by now it's touched every family.

You know what I noticed? Not one report online that I have read has mentioned the fact it was suicide. There's a stigma attached to it in our country and it doesn't help, it puts these young kids off talking to someone as far as I'm concerned. We seem to be half afraid of confronting the problem here and it's about time that attitude ceased. It's so frustrating, every fecking day young people in their primes all over a tiny feckin island being lost to suicide.

There's very strict guidelines around reporting suicide. Repeated studies have shown that the more the media discusses a suicide, particularly a high-profile one, the more people commit suicide.

I hate this so much. Strangers doing this really upsets me because I like almost everyone had bad times and only luck and chance stopped me being the one.
 
Is anyone actually watching the International Rules match? It needs to be scrapped or totally revamped for it to be of any interest in the long term.

The Aussies were a joke and got what they deserved. They need to get their best back. Otherwise, what's next? Best left-footed team? Best blue-eyed team? A fecking joke.

Biggest win ever 69 points 2013, biggest series win 101 points 2013, most team goals series (2 matches) 8 goals Ireland 2013.

Bring back the physicality but ref it right. The biggest Aussies are bigger than the biggest Irish, but that shouldn't mean that they can just bate the shite out of us.

The problem is its closer to gaelic football than it is AFL. Its just gaelic with tackles, and in fact its a bit easier with the addition of the mark and its easier to score. They should give the AFL ball a go or make the pitch oval or something. Its a bit shit as it is.

Scrap it. The Aussies dont want to play it judging by the quality of team they put out. Game was a disaster.
 
I was listening to it on the radio up until I think it was the end of the 2nd quarter when Wooly Parkinson pulled over Earley and asked him would there be any chance he'd give him a run if Ireland had a 100 points clocked up with a few minutes left and he managed to get himself the loan of some gear off a lad.

Terrible day out lads and last night was rough enough too, rain, thunder and lightening, high winds the whole lot. I'm having a bit to ate here now and a gander through the paper and I'll be heading off then to Niall Donoghues funeral. County final tomorrow then in Pearse stadium between Loughrea and Portumna. I'd say there'll be a strange enough atmosphere at it as I'm sure there will in the Galway dressing room when they meet up again too.

Galway SHC final

Portumna 3-12 : 0-14 Loughrea

Joe Canning scoring 1-5 from midfield again and Andy Smith (MoTM) with 1-4.

A good open game with the vast majority of the scores coming from play. Both teams headed in at half time all square but Loughrea who have now lost 4 out of the last 5 county finals didn't put away handy enough scoring chances at vital times of the 2nd half and Portumna punished them for it. So a 6th county title for Portumna now and a good bet for a 4th All-Ireland come Paddies day.
 
Season tickets for the 2014 season are out today. I was definitely going to get one since its 80euro for free entry to all league matches and the first Championship match, along with guaranteed tickets for the rest of the Championship matches(inc. AI final). Went on this morning to see that the Dublin ones are 165euro for Hill. The extra 80euro is free in to all club matches in 2014. feck that, I dont go to nearly enough club matches to warrant that. Pissed off now.
 
Cheap as chips that is man. Get the ticket and try to get yourself to as many club games as possible. Great entertainment on a Saturday afternoon.
 
Its a good deal if you go to the club games, but I play football myself most weekends both Saturday and Sunday so doubt I'd be able to make it worth it. I worked it out that with all the games I went to last year I wouldve saved about 5euro by getting the season ticket, and the only game I had a problem getting a ticket for was the final. I was gonna get it this year just for the fact that I'd be guaranteed a ticket if we got to the final again. The extra 80euro doesnt really make it worth it for me though, especially since a club game would be cheap for me anyway since I'm a student.

If these finish this weekend, it leaves just the Clare SFC. What indanameajaysus have the Clare football board been doing all summer? They still have a seminfinal to play between Doonbeg and Lisseycasey. Laois beat Clare on July 6th and four months later, they're still not done with their SFC?

If Ballyboden win, they will become the first Dublin club to win 6-in-7 since Garda 1925-31. Even Faughs, with all their wins, never managed that.
 
Re the CB annual tickets, I had it that the Laois one was €100. I enquired recently to find that the hurling & football are separate and cost €175 min each. It entitles me to the all club and county league matches plus the first c'ship match in that code.....but if Laois progress (no jokes please), I get charged even if I don't go!?! feck sake.
 
Our ladies football team - Sarsfields - is into the All Ireland semifinal. They play Carnacon but have to go to Balluntubber. How come the ladies association don't play in neutral venues?

The last time we won Leinster, we had to travel to Cork to play a team who were 10 minutes away from the pitch. Whaddup with that?
 
I think Vincents beat Ballymun in the Dublin SFC. Ballymun had a decent lead but were pulled back and Vincent ran out winners in a close finish.
