Don't know if anybody caught this earlier

I've watched everything from Attenborough since time immemorial - Life on Earth, Life, The Living Planet, Blue Planet etc etc the whole gamut but this tonight was simply jaw droppingly astonishing TV - about the best natural history program I've ever seen

If you did'nt see it I'd urge you to iplayer it or get a recording of it even if only for your kids - simply wonderful imaginative learning tool

It really is worth taking the trouble to look at it - the last ten minutes watching how it was filmed is mind boggling, the quality of the camera work is truly exceptional

The panoramic views of the glacier are crazy because you don't get an idea of the scale, they look like small waves but the peaks and troughs are actually huge. Attenborough serials are always brilliant, I still catch episodes of Life whenever they're on iPlayer.

I totally forgot about this, another bloody blu-ray purchase a few months down the line no doubt.

Amazing stuff yet again from Attenborough and team. They never disappointment.

There is a scene with a seal that is pretty sad you'll know what I mean when you see it.

Does it involve a club?

Its being hunted by Killer Wales.

Starts off safe on a large sheet of ice. The whales makes waves to knock it off, then it falls in but manages to get back on to a small piece of ice. They then play with it and it escapes one last time. It drags itself onto a large ice sheet but is to knackered to move, and you get a horrible shot of it's face as it accepts its fate and is dragged into the water slowly without giving any fight.

A bit like the end of king kong. :(

That was er 'chilling' :D

No seriously very sad that

Outside of the incredible animal footage I found the takes on the movement of the glaciers and Erebus simply stupendous

Excellent watch. Really gave an insight into the alien quality of the landscapes there. And we got some polar bear action at the start

I love this stuff.

Well, except for Blue Planet where they spent half the series filming the same whale carcus and prattling on about the amazingness of tube worms.

"upon arriving at the bottom, scientists were amazed to discover an underwater lake ...but, even more astonishing than that *camera imediately cuts away from lake without any explanation being given*.....more tube worms!"

for feck sake, I don't give a feck about tube worms.

That poor slow bison thing that got eaten :( I thought the one from behind would try and save him, but not he just knocks him down and fecks off.

Hilarrious.

I thought, 'phew, his mate is gonna twat them wolves and they will rush off into the sunset.'

But, no, he merely head-butted his brother, left him for dead, then continued fleeing.

 If anything it basically resigned him to death as it knocked him over.

Blue planet was awesome, it proved how evolution doesn't care for intelligence. How many smaller species kept using the bait ball technique and then after an orchestral highpoint and few moody words from Attenborough it was gone, time and time again.

I felt most sorry for the polar bear in a beaten and bloody way at the start.

I felt sorry for him too. All that f*cking and fighting certainly took its toll!

How scarily intelligent are Killer Whales? If they evolve and grow legs, we're in trouble!

Stunning stuff. Some of the footage was just amazing, both landscape and wildlife. The bison bit and the seal bit were pretty horrible but some of the hunting methods were just ridiculous - not just the orcas' intelligence but also the wolves' sheer weight of numbers and ability to take down such huge prey.

Pathetically I had to switch channels because that kind of thing upsets me, especially as they're basically the dogs of the sea.

I find it really hard to think Orcas are/can be bastards because Free Willy played a huge part in my childhood. I thought the bison bit was shit though, I thought that one was riding in to save the day but unfortunately, much like batman he left more problems in his wake than if he hadn't rode in at all.

Stunning HD footage... I loved it.

The orcas hunting that seal was incredible indeed... animals always have a bit of ingenuity about them, but you could tell there was a bit of reflective consciousness behind the killer whales' hunt. Absolutely incredible.

Also loved the timelapses illustrating the movement of glaciers.

Is this like an episode in a series of documentaries or a single one? If its the latter I'd like to see it.

I missed it last week but watched it yesterday afternoon. Stunningly brilliant. I love David Attenborough. Been fascinated with his programmes ever since I was a kid, my favourite clip of his is when he meets the gorillas.

Wednesday. This was the first in the series so expect all the different moments in that first episode to be shown in greater depth in the upcoming episodes.

It struck me that the larger bison/buffalo knew the younger one was going to be killed by the wolves so he rammed him from behind and forced him head first into the ground at full speed, probably breaking his neck and killing him instantly.

Mercy killing IMO.

Attenborough said that they were running head down just focusing on escaping the pack. Looked like he accelerated into the younger Bison though. May have been a sacrifice to keep the pack away from him and the rest of the herd.

It shows the superior intellect of the wolves though, surely the bison would have been able to fight them off if they didn't bottle it and run away.

It's brilliant. I saw a show on Humpback Whales and how they hunt and then watched that chase with the Orcas. They scare you in the way they toy with the seal and their level of intelligence is incredible.
