Wouldn't be a terrible move for Wenger IMO, especially if Arsenal have serious thoughts of winning the league now. Soon enough Almunia or Fabianski will cost them precious points again.

EPL News: Brad Friedel in line for shock exit from Aston Villa

Aston Villa's veteran goal keeper, Brad Friedel could very well be on his way out of the club as early as January.

This news came into existence after the club went ahead and started to stall his contract talks and those talks have now been put on a hold indefinitely.

The American shot stopper, who is currently aged at 39-years-old, happens to be one of the highest earners at the club, bringing in a massive forty thousand pounds a week. The keeper joined Villa after impressing in the Premier League with Blackburn way back in 2008.

At the moment his contract is set to run out in the summers therefore it is strongly believed that Gerard Houllier is willing to let the player go.

The keeper who has managed to make around two hundred and fifty consecutive appearances for the clubs, has been put up in the market indirectly after his name was given to a string of agents to try and develop a hype and interest for the player by other clubs.

As a result the board are currently hoping that a club will come knocking on their door for the keeper in the January transfer window and that way Villa can let the player go for a small fee as opposed to letting him go for free in the summers.

Earlier it was reported that John Carew was told he could leave the team and now it appears like Friedel has also joined that list of players that the Villa officials are chalking up in order to cut their losses.

At the same time the team is also looking to try and land Rangers shot stopper Allan McGregor in order to replace Friedel as the number one shot stopper at the club. Nonetheless a move for the McGregor is subject to the fact that Friedel does end up leaving the team as early as they are anticipating.

With the market demand for a quality keeper on the high at the moment, it is safe to say that it won't be very hard for the keeper to find a new employer.

It's not the most well-written piece I've ever read, not that dissimilar from that loon Phil Mac Giolla Mbain's writing.

Friedel really is getting on though and the McGregor rumours show little sign of abating. Keepers can go downhill quite quickly once they hit a certain point.

I hope you are being sarcastic because he is not that good.

Whenever United played Blackburn, he was not just good. He was a super human. He single handed hold United to 0-0 draws countless times. Making astonishing saves one after another.

He is freaking 39 years old and you want to replace VDS? You must be barking mate! He may have been good but he is not good anymore. His reflexes are far worse than VDS and VDS is already almost a year older than Friedel.

Sign him so we don't have to play him.

I'm a bloody genius.

I think he's been really poor this season. The first time i've thought he's looked his age. He's made a few uncharacteristic mistakes and his reactions seem to have gotten worse.
I think Friedel has passed his sell-by date. You can't defy the sands of time forever and for keepers the end comes swiftly.

He's been shite for a while now... and nobody seems to have noticed.

I agree. He hasn't been all that great recently and not sure what signing a 39 year old keeper will achieve for Arsenal. No long term stability. Which is why Wenger's pursuit of Schwarzer was weird.

Alright, alright you don't need to scream at me. Jesus. VDS playing his last season. And we sign some unknown, unproven young kid from some unknown country. Sorry for wanting United to have somebody proven and with a little experiance as an option next year. do you really believe it's so much better to stick with unknown kid and PIG, than having an alternative?

BTW interestingly wasn't it Houllier who got rid of him at Liverpool as well? Perhaps there is some past history there.

That was crazy for three reasons: his age, his competence and not getting him and undermining the keepers you've got. Not Arsene's finest moment.

Didn't know 26 was still counted as "kid". In that case Macheda must be the first toddler to play for Man Utd.

There is a difference between a Goalkeeper and a field player you know, Anyway being honest i thought that unknown keeper was younger.

Latest news on him: Reds lead Friedel chase | Aston Villa News, Fixtures, Results, Transfers | Sky Sports

The "Reds" are Liverpool, before people get upset about the misleading headline.

Liverpool are leading the race to sign Brad Friedel and take him back to Anfield, skysports.com understands.

Friedel is out of contract in the summer at Aston Villa, and the Midlands club are keen for him to stay.

The Amercian has held talks with Villa, but skysports.com understands that up to three other Premier League clubs are ready to make the 39-year-old an offer.

West Brom and Tottenham are also very keen on Friedel, who is set to make a decision on his future following Villa's final game of the season - which coincidentally is against Liverpool on Sunday.

If he goes to Liverpool, he'll no doubt be a bit part player, only ever playing matches against us (because he turns into a demon whenever he sees a United shirt). The other two clubs would probably make him first choice, and I'm sure Spurs will have more wages to spare than Albion.

At the age of 39 though, he surely can't have many more seasons at the top level.

He would be a good buy for Tottenham, even for a single season. I think he would be a back up there though as for some weird reason I expect Gomes to remain number one, Redknapp doesn't mind him.

Spurs would do well to get him if they don't think Gomez is a fit. Friedel has another year left in him, so if Spurs pick up a second, younger keeper who can be mentored, it would be a good fit. New guy plays second fiddle next season and Friedel plays second fiddle the next allowing for a stop gap of development.

Saying that, Gomez would be fantastic if he could just concentrate better. He pulls off saves that are incredible, but his lack of concentration is going to cost you about 12 points a season. At what point do you give up? He's had 3 years and has improved, but Spurs don't have any more time.

Yes. That long article with all the sources and quotes well and truly confirmes that.

Anyone else see it?

I can't imagine Friedel would settle for being a backup to Reina, unless the latter is on his way out of Liverpool. Friedel would surely have other offers to be the starting keeper.

Not the worst thing. At 40 years of age he probably doesn't want to play every week.

A nice easy ride into the sunset.

Cudicini must be leaving, how long will he settle for being a number two? he'd be a great signing for someone like West Brom.

Not sure, don't think he was as good as he has been last season and if it begins to go at that age it can be a slippery slope a la Seaman.

Think Cudicini loves being number 2, hasn't ever really shown a desire to fight or move at Chelsea or Tottenham.

Now he'd be a number three though wouldn't he? Unless Gomes is leaving.
