Frenkie de Jong - Part 2 - Chase Harder.

At least he must be more tempted to join now that we are making clear progress and will probably offer CL football. Barca might also be more tempted to sell if they need to raise cash. Frenkie at 85m makes more sense than Bellingham at 130m.

He's a guaranteed starter at Barca now. If he didn't leave last season after they brought in midfielders and after a season where he was in and out of the squad why would he leave now that he's one of their untouchables in the starting eleven?? It's over.

Barca tried to get him to take a paycut last season during the time they were also trying to get him to move, and when neither looked like it was going to happen they started threatening to start legal action. He stood his ground then and stayed there on his current contract, so I can't see anything changing now. Maybe a small paycut, but there's nothing to indicate that he'll let Barca screw him over.

It seems to me like the relationship between him and Barcelona wasn't at its best last season while it has completely turned around now. He'll likely get a restructured contract where he'll take deferred payments later on. The situation for him at Barca has changed compared to a year ago and if he didn't leave when he was in and out of the squad why would he leave now that he's a guaranteed starter? Makes no sense whatsoever he'd even consider a move now.

Unlikely Barca turn down anything north of £60m for De Jong but it comes down to what the player really wants and we have been here before, however, maybe Mcallister at Brighton would be a good alternative.
completely agree.......down to the player I feel.....hopefully the prospect of playing with caseimero attracts him and being the main man in our resurgence

Making an unobtainable player our number one target is kinda sneaky in a way. We can quietly grab other players without being noticed e.g Casemiro behind the din of muppet screaching.

This. Spot on. Lets "chase" him the whole summer :wenger:

Difference is Wesley Sneijder would have actually signed for us that Summer if we hadn't been operating along Glazernomic lines and lowballed them -ideally of course we should have just got him and Robben on a job lot from Madrid back in 09 after selling Ronaldo and still had 30m to spare, if it wasn't for the parasites. Wiith Frenkie, whatever Barca are claiming retrospectively, its fairly reliably verified that they at least accepted an offer in principle, conditional upon FDJ giving up his claims for the existing wages (or coming to some agreement, this part hasn't been made clear) and he (and his fiancee) wouldn't go for it...

I wonder if the day will ever come where world class players at the top of their careers will move from Real/Barca to a premier league club or if it is ultimately only going the opposite way.
I can see many reasons why you would choose Spain over England and La Liga over the Premier League. But if you want to play at the highest level and not only enjoy the sun and the easy money then there is no doubt that England is the place to be.

Oh there's plenty of doubt. If you look at the European trophies won and iconic teams in the last decade Spain is head and shoulders above England. Add here the easy life and it's clear why it's the superior life. England would pay you more money in absolute terms though, that's for sure.

TIFO IR L did a piece on whats missing from the Utd midfield i.e. the sort of skillset required when you combine bruno, casemiro and player x. Putting frenkie in with bruno and casemiro gives you a midfield that can do everything very well. Each have their own strengths but combined they can do it all. TIFO IR L showed this with a 'pizza chart', take the abilities of bruno and casemiro and overlay them. Then for example add frenkie to that 'pizza chart', the chart becomes complete.

In a nutshell we are missing a ball carrying, dribber in midfield who is press resistant. Thats what frenkie is in a nutshell.

If we cant get him, we need someone who can offer a similar skillset. Those alternatives are few and far between in world football.

Link?

Thanks - very informative. It's clear FDJ would help this midfield a lot, and failing that maybe a cheeky bid for Gravenberch?

PS Depressing how Arsenal were able to get a free run at Odegaard

They are just depressing with this title charge full stop, when is Erik gonna know he is not going to win this one

I think Matheus Nunes from Wolves is very similar type of midfielder as FDJ.

Fdj, gavi, pedri, fati, and maybe dembele, they will keep. Will try to get rid of the others.if the reduction isn't enough, one of the above will probably make way.

Pedri, Gavi, Araujo, Koundé, Balde, Lewandowski. The others are sold with the right offer.

Am I the only person who doesn't want FDJ?

We chased him last summer and he didn't want to come. Right now we have such a great team of warriors who seem committed to the club - I want to sign more players aligned to that culture. Not some whiney, money grabbing, under the thumb midfield 'maestro'.

Much rather bring in Bellingham who is going to be an absolute beast by the time he's 23

Absolutely not! I just loved watching him and his Barca chums trudging off the pitch to boos when we dumped them out of the Europa. Feck him!

I'm pretty certain there's a line of communication between Ten Hag and De Jong so we surely wouldn't pursue him unless there's a chance he wants to join.

I think the fact he's starting for Barca and about to win La Liga with a young team, makes it unlikely he'll leave.

If we win the PL and CL next year, optimistic I know, then we could lure him I think.

The PL is very attractive also.

This exact same thing was said for all of last summer

It's more complicated than I understand as he's owed wages and Barca are in huge debt and need to sell, so it's hard to know exactly whats going on.

All of these things were the case last summer as well. He was owed wages then. Barcelona was in debt then and needed to sell.

The only thing that's changed between last summer and now is that we aren't crap. There's no reason to believe this is any more likely to happen now than it was last summer.

He wasn't starting every game last season and Barca were way off Real.

I think there has to be some truth to that. The alternative (ETH chased him without contacting him, or worse contacted him and was told he isn't interested) is too absurd to be true.

But I do agree it doesn't seem likely to happen. Whatever the issue last summer (contract related) is still there, and now he's first choice and winning the league as well the cnut.

5mins onwards

Love videos like this. Thanks for sharing.

I totally agree with him but I think getting a Bruno replacement is far down on our list of priorities, and instead, as the video quite rightly pointed out, we should be looking to find a player to compliment Bruno and Casemiro.

I think if ten Hag wants a ball carrier, then look no further than Jude Bellingham, who's stand out attribute is his ability to drive with and without the ball. According to whoscored.com, Bellingham has completed the most successful dribbles (2.5) per game as a DM/CM, with his closest rival being Man Utd Kone (1.8) and Sergi Darder (1.8).

That being said, we want more than a ball carrier, in my opinion, which is why ten Hag has been so insistent on playing Eriksen, who, although he doesn't have the ball carrying ability of a Bellingham or De Jong, he has the composure and ability to dictate games, which I believe is important next to Bruno, who, as the video said, is a high volume passer.

Moving on, if we can get someone like De Jong, who can give us both, ball carrying and controlling attribubtes, then it's a win win. However, I wonder whether ten Hag could attempt to get Jude Bellingham and mold him into the same type of player Gravenberch was under him.

Be interesting to see what type of midfielder ten Hag pursues in the summer.
