Frenkie de Jong - Part 2 - Chase Harder.

Yeah can see Barca being more open to selling Gavi than Frenkie at this moment in time. He's their best midfielder at the moment.

Before the world cup Barca were better off starting Gavi over Frenkie. Gavi is also 2 years younger than Pedri, so it is expected for him to look rougher around the edges and be more inconsistent. But even when he doesn't have a good game, Gavi will put in the hard yards and doesn't need to be babysat. I'd be more than happy to take him if De Jong isn't available. Pedri plays higher up and isn't what we need.

This summer it'll be more of a question of do Barca even want to sell anymore?

He's looked a nailed on starter as of late and his performances have him looking undroppable

Because this is still a thing. Our only hope really. They essentially need to sell 200m worth of players to comply with their regulations.

But would leaving Barca mean forfeiting his pay? Couldn't he just pursue that legally while not being a Barca player? I don't know how this works, genuinely asking.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm a legal expert. Based on what I have read Frenkie deferred wages during Covid pandemic (along with other Barca teammates) to help the club in its financial crisis. This money was then amortized over the length of his remaining contract. Ex ( I make 10 million a year over 5 years. For 2 years I only take 2 million in salary with the promise that the other 18 million will be spread to the final 3 years of my deal. This would make the value of the contract 16 million per year instead of 10 million.) Now the club wants to sell me before I get to the 3rd year.

It's all shite, so please just stop it for your own sakes. He isn't joining us and a pile of clickbait articles from various news outlets isn't going to change that.

We're gluttons for punishment on this site. It's almost as if we revel in doom and gloom. Now that we're playing really good football and, ironically, The United fecking Way again, we're following this shitshow again even though we all know it's going to end in tears.

Until Ten Hag comes out and says "he's my number one target" I don't care. And even at that point I'll just be coming back for the awesome memes like last summer.

Its pretty much well-documented that this isn't what happened. If your job owed you 3 years' worth of wages and then tried to fire you would you willingly leave?

Literally straight from the horse's mouth. The Barca higher ups were clearly willing to move him for a price but he personally has never shown a willingness to leave no matter how much people want to claim it was over wages owed to him, even then do people think Barca are going to suddenly pay him the money he's owed because United are a better side than last summer? It's not happening no matter how much people want to mentally masturbate over it, looks like Barca wouldn't want to let him go now anyway based on his performances.

Yeah this is a nothing story and pretty sure it's now hit home to Erik he's not for sale and will need to look elsewhere this summer

Perhaps this update that Barca need to sell links to some of the Ansu Fati rumours a couple weeks back. As talented as he is his injury record is pretty appalling so I can see why he might be a big name to leave.

Can’t see anyone paying what they would want though given his record.

Ironic saying “we” when you are the one spouting doom and gloom

One thing is not being able to sign and another thing is having to sell.
If a very good offer comes for Barcelona and FDJ wants to go to United there will be no problem. We'll see what happens.

Hasn't Tebas just said you need to make 200m thru sales?

Ten Hag should be instructed and demanded to never say that considering it puts us in a horrible position negotiation wise.

Yeah, if he leaves he loses out on the deferment so I don't see him ever leaving. Also he's prove so valuable for them, I don't see them getting rid. I know they have to sell though, thats the big asterisk. If they absolutely have to then surely we could capitalize on something, but it doesn't seem like it would be him.

There is a lot of context missing here. At the time Barcelona was trying to strong-arm him into a different contract and threatened him with legal action. Admitting that he wants to leave reduces any leverage he has in the situation, and what was best for his situation is to stay and collect a larger paycheck than he would get anywhere else. Depending on your source he is on a 37.5m Euro deal annually through the end of his deal (https://www.capology.com/player/frenkie-de-jong-35562/). As I said in my previous post if your employer was going to pay you 3x for the same salary you would probably want to stay at your job as well.

Either way, Barcelona is in a poor financial position. De Jong is an expendable asset that they will try to move this summer. Its fine if you don't believe that it will happen, but there isnt' a better fit for how ETH wants to play. His signing would take us up another full level.

Just wondering. Has any manager ever come out in public claiming players contracted to other clubs as his targets?

Tebas said that they won't let barca sign players in the summer given their economic situation.

Its pretty much well-documented that this isn't what happened. If your job owed you 3 years' worth of wages and then tried to fire you would you willingly leave?
If my employer treated me like that and tried to force me out I would definitely not stay. I am not holding it against him that he stayed at Barcelona, I can come up with a lot of reasons why some would rather live and work in Barcelona than in Manchester. I just don’t think that we should go for players who needs to be persuaded to join one of the biggest club in the world in the best league in the world.

You'd let your employer steal wages from you and leave without a fight?

Lowering the wage bill is different from making sales.
How, in all that’s holy, will you make 200m in one summer by lowering wages? So many players have already bent over for you by forgoing money, you gonna make them play for free next?
You didn’t even lower the wage bill last year on top of that when you brought so many in.
Ridiculous

I hope we don't chase him around in the same manner as last year, when it was obvious he didn't really want to join.

Only players I want as this club are players Ten Haag wants and players who are eager to join us.

They'll do the same thing they did during the Covid year but way more drastic.

"Hey Lewa! How about you collect like 10 pounds a week from now until 2 years, then we'll pay you 20 million a season from the 3rd year onwards?
Don't forget, More than a Club!"

Don't do it to yourselves. He clearly didn't want to join us last summer. He did everything possible to avoid the move it seems.

Don't want anyone like that.

I agree with that. After assembling this really likeable team that really seems to love it here I feel this guy wouldn't fit in.

Even though he'd be absolutely perfect for us I don't see this happening. How would it help Barca to sell the spine of their team just to be able to do transfers? They're better off keeping him and others

His contract is already drawn up to to where he and his agent earns more every season he stays to avoid ffp.

I don’t know if he had to stay to take that fight or he could have left and let his lawyers fight for him in court
There's nothing for his lawyers to fight. He knowingly signed a contract which dropped his wages significantly for the first two years but would then increase dramatically so he'd make those wages back in the latter years. Barca were in financial trouble and he agreed to that deal to help them out. In terms of legality, if he left Barca before those later seasons came along then he isn't owed that money.

Morally though, Barca trying to force him out after taking advantage of him helping them out was an absolute disgrace. He did the right thing to help them out and they turned around and tried to utterly screw him. As far as I'm concerned he did the right thing refusing to move in that situation, as much as I wish he had come here as a Utd fan. It was one of the most disgraceful things I've ever seen a club try to do to a player and made them as a club look even worse.

It's gone how I said it would for Frenkie, that he'd get back in the team, get CL football, great chance to win a league title just by being there as it's usually Barca or Madrid. Sees himself in Spanish football, has been dismissive of English football in the past. They have to strongly force him out of the club, they were just open to selling at the right price at the time and really they should just take the contract on the chin, he's a top player worth having.

It's a waste to try and follow and guess their financial state, the rules that change, so many scare stories and false fears of unregistered players that for two years have suddenly become registered, people claiming they have to sell him and Barca are doomed.

United and ETH look more stable to join but the pressure from the top to sell might be less and he and his partner will want to stay ideally.

It either went like -

"Please please please De Jong. We love you. Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase.' 'No. Never. I fkn hate United.' "We won't give up. We love you"

Or
"Do you want to play for United?" "Yeah it definitely sounds interesting but if I leave my lawyers say I forfeit my due wages.'

Im going with the second one because Ten Haag is not an idiot. He knows De Jong and if United were chasing him then he must have been told he is keen and wants to play for him. Just chasing him around for months for no reason would make him some kind of weirdo bald stalker which I don't think he is.

I never understand how everyone just makes up stories and parrots them around like they are facts. What goes on between United the agent and the player is privileged information. Sure there are some leaks but only part of the story and only what they want known. The pursuit of De Jong and Casemiro was probably very complicated. For instance here is how I envision the talks go during a transfer window-

Ten H - You have 150 budget who do you want. Timber, De Jong, Antony.
Day 2 - Timber wants to stay for the World Cup. Ok get Martinez.
Day 3 - De Jong has legal issues but Casemiro wants to come. Oh I love him but I think we need De Jong more. We have Fred and McTominay but no one like De Jong. Can we afford both? Well lets see how much Martinez and Antony is.
Day 4 - Ronaldo definitely wants out. We need a striker. Oh sht. Ok drop Antony for now. Send me a list of striker targets

Times this by a hundred/ a thousand back and forth with everything changing hourly/daily/weekly. Then all we get is 1 percent of the overall story and take it as facts.

Not sure what’s exactly unrealistic about that? You think even with the United tax, we can’t find any of the striker listed that would go for around that money? We have been rather shit at buying not that shit, I hope.

A summer net spend of ~ 80m is pretty normal for United, even if the Glazers remain in charge.
Wasn’t a dig mate, just that real life doesn’t work like that very often.
I am certain ETH is protecting Donny and he absolutely won’t be sold. I don’t see Pellistri leaving permanently either - he’ll probably get a loan move again.
Scott and Harry I can see leaving for playing time, but we’ll take a massive loss on them. 15ish and 50 or less respectively. I’m not sure we will find any takers for Martial - a footballer who seems unable to play football and who bombed on loan.
Id rather sort a proper striker and then see if Barca are desperate enough to sell us FDJ for spare change. If he will come.

We have a pretty tight FFP too, so we need to either spend to buy or convince a player swap. Unless Barcelona is interested in something like Lindelöf and Dalot, its not happening.

We don't have restrictions this extreme, we can spend we just can't go crazy like we did last summer without selling

Not enough hehs

I would take anything that Tebas says with a pinch of salt.

His words have the same value as water.

I say this because he has been harping on about this for the last 18 months, Barca always find a way without selling.
