There’s a huge question over whether being more creative with the ball than Matic or Fellaini really makes a player stand out. He loses the ball a lot.

Yeah, because he shows for balls in areas he probably shouldn't. Most of the times he loses the ball he is surrounded by players as soon as he controls it. He shouldn't be receiving the ball there. It's a mixture of him and the other players.

Overall i thought he was alright last night. He lost the ball a couple of times, but he also made some important interceptions and he really does get around. He carried the ball forward now and then and i like his intent. He doesn't always look for the safe pass but instead tries to progress up the pitch. He wasn't perfect but he's getting there.

The general consensus almost seems to be that he's a flop already. Which is fecking nonsense.

I don't think he's a flop. It's obviously too early to label him.

I just genuinely don't see what he brings to the team that makes him better than Herrera. And I don't necessarily think Herrera is any better than a strong bench / backup option.

Hopefully he'll settle and some aspect of his game will become a noticeable improvement.

Wow, that's big conclusion. He has been here for 5 games, I don't think any such general consensus can be formed yet. He's looked decent when he has played. Brings a lot of quick passing and movement to our midfield but is a bit undisciplined in terms of spacial awareness.

It can on the Caf
This is the same place that had a massive thread about how Ronaldo was overrated and will never make it.

Mobility is a quality that we need more of in midfield. He has it. You can see he can pass, though his passing has been erratic, you can see he can tackle, though his tackling has been reckless at times, you can see he has an eye for forward movement of the ball. I'm not scratching my head as to why he was bought, he just has to apply his qualities more forcefully and consistently on games. Which was always going to take more than 5 games. Anyone waving the white flag at this stage is being overly dramatic.

That's not me thinking that. In case you somehow mistook what i said.

So with that out of the way, i don't think it's a wild thing to say. I consume a lot of football media (too much, really) and already he's been written off. He was on a list the other day of players who already look a complete waste of money. This was after 4 games...

Some journalist the other day also compared him to Keita and said that he (keita) is clearly miles ahead of Fred and he doesn't understand what United bought him for. They implied that he was a wate of money. Again, after 4 fecking games. In conjunction with a few hyperbolic comments on here, that's why i came to that conclusion. I don't agree with it, i think he's been fine, but that's the way things seem to be going at this moment in time.

Of course it's too soon to come to any conclusion. That's why i said it was ridiculous.

Thank god no one here is the manager, after 3 games some of you are already writing him off!

It always seems that not many of our players ever hit the ground running when they sign for us. On a positive note, although he's been poor he can hit a very quick pass in between the lines and into the forwards feet. Only displayed it once or twice last night but i noticed it in the other games. Could be very useful in speeding up our tempo when he settles a bit.

It was particularly annoying when every single one of their corners was an absolutely fantastic delivery. Been an issue with us for years. Kind of beggars belief that a club with so many stars as we have, doesn't seem to have a single player capable of striking a dead ball as well as BSC Young Boys' number 7.

To be fair to Fred, he does seem capable of hitting a decent dead ball. Just needs to do it consistently.

EDIT: Also. It's probably harder striking a ball cleanly on astroturf, when you're not used to it.

Yeah he can probably point to that for this match at least.

Where are his critics when yesterday Pogba and Matic lost the ball in dangerous areas of the pitch due to slow decision making ? Are they suddenly flops too ? Fred's tempo is faster and that's the problem here. I'm not really surprised he can't slingshot himself into this team just yet when this group of players is in great need of chemistry.

McKenna and Mou needs to sync this team to play like an oiled machine and that mainly includes tempo of play.

BTW, he was quite good in the 2nd half, definitely kept his stamina levels on high and sometimes I think his pace is suited also for a winger role. Play him more and stop pretending he's the only player who's misplacing passes at times.

Agree with all of this.

He was also involved in the 1st goal. Not sure why this is being ignored.

Let me ask you this and it's a sincere question: at the time we were being rumoured to be after Sanchez, did you find it baffling? Were you convinced it was going to be a bad move?

genuinely yeah! very little upside to a player like that, huge wages, no resale, was playing very poorly and visibly sulking for arsenal and is an older player relying on explosiveness which may or may not be on the decline. we also had martial finally getting going under jose. I thought he was signe d for the RW and would have preferred a gamble on Malcolm or someone else approaching their peak on 1/3 of the wages coming into our side. big wages dont mean big performances at this club- bastian, di maria , falcao, rooney etc etc. the one positive thing the signing did was show that there would always be competition for places and sulking would not be indulged. learn to fight for your place or leave.

There's a big difference between writing someone off and pointing out that one performance was poor. And last night he was poor.

I'm surprised at how harsh some of the replies are. He hasn't been great but we've already seen the qualities he has. He'll come good.

Yep and those doubters will re-write history and say how great a signing he is. Some on here are more inconsistent than the players they lambast. Pity we can fire fans or sell them to other clubs for making mistakes too....

Nah Keita has been distinctly average. He was dropped against PSG and hauled off against Spurs.

Basically like for like with Fred. Both need time to adapt.

You mean aside from 2 good matches?

If Fred had 2 good matches as well as the poorer ones things would be looking a lot better for him

The winning midfield formula is now Matic, Fellani and Pogba.

Hopefully he can stake a claim with Matic suspended. Doubt Mourinho will bench Matic even if he plays well.

I'm not going to lie, I don't think he's very good. I don't think he's cut out for this league and he doesn't offer much.

I didn't see him at Shakhtar so I can only go off very limited time here as my evidence but unless something miraculous happens and he suddenly beds in he's not going to get the time to show what he can do either.

Impressive, I have to say. You are largely being proven right but for the sake of the club, I hope Sanchez proves you wrong. Very worrying indeed if he does not pick up. Like many other people, I thought we had a big catch when we exchanged him for Miki.

He was good against the Spurs. The thing is, hes used to playing in structured offenses, he isn’t suited to our improvised 1 on 1 offense.

He's made 3 appearances in the league, and without a proper pre season with the team. Give him a bloody chance!

In Pogba and Fred we have two of the key central midfielders for France and Brazil, and yet people here are constantly whittering about their lack of "spatial awareness" and poor passing. It's just so weird that here on the CAF we have so many with an amazingly perceptive eye for good midfield play, yet France and Brazil are clearly struggling with coaches who don't have a clue.

Or, and just hear me out, maybe, just maybe, Pogba and Fred are both great but they are in a team still under development, one in which they have been instructed to accelerate the speed of play (which we have all been complaining about for years).

I'm surprised you replied to that nonsense comment. Anyone that thinks Fred 'doesnt offer much' is flat out ignoring what's happening in games.

Passing through the lines
Tackling/pressing

Loses the ball a lot
Struggles with heading the ball

He was instrumental in the 3rd goal, reacting to the loose ball quickly and putting a pass through the lines to Pogba in space.

One of the reasons why he was so good at this, he didn't need to take many touches and think about whether to pass backwards or sideways, he'll always look for adventure pass. Not to mention he is by the far best passing midfielder and also quicker in the league, especially with Jorginho in a league who passed 150 times each game but less accurate pass rate than Fred.

I can see that he may need to improve his positioning and tackle, every time I see him tacking, it is foul. If he can improve his tackling and shielding balls, he will come good as we expect him to be.

Even if Fred is having a bad game but never hide like Ozil, Eriksen, Mhki etc. evidenced in Spurs and Brighton when we were losing, he always tries to make it happen.

His passing is incredibly accurate and slick. Look a bit lost in the breakdown and when the ball is loose. Getting forward in the box plenty which is great. Expected him to be better at breaking up play but guess he is a pure playmaker

I agree that Fred's passing is very good. Good range and good delivery. He has no problem lofting one over the top for the fullback or striker to run onto.

He also brings a lot of pressing and attacking runs.

He's definitely not the finished product, a bit too eager which leads to a lot of fouls and losing of possession instead of being more composed.

He is ok so far. Has moments where you see class and then has moments where he looks lost on the pitch. But he needs time to adapt. We will see after few months how good he is

I disagree completely. Like his other performances he constantly lost the ball, was tackled 4 times and had 76% passing accuracy

Thats a good performance for a relegation threatened team.

A key central midfielder that got 0 minutes at the world cup...

Baby Jesus on a motorcycle.

- Joins us from a foreign league
- No pre season, recovering from an injury
- A first team that's not settled in

No idea why some are so quick to judge. It should hardly come as a shock that a midfielder from a foreign league needs a bit of time to settle in and adjust to the tempo.

In regards to complaining about lack of goals and assists, I doubt his main purpose on the pitch is to provide that. If his presence on the pitch allows Pogba to play with more freedom, and we unlock his full potential, then I'll sure as hell prefer that over another midfielder that adds a goal or an assist every once in a while. You can get players that gel with the rest of the team, making the whole team play better, without being the one banging in goals or assisting others. Look at the effect Edgar Davids had at a struggling Barcelona team.

Now, I'm hardly saying that Fred is going to turn us into an awesome-sauce team, destroying every opponent, but having a go at a newly signed player that's had no pre-season, complaining that he doesn't look like a footballer that will add goals or assists and is thus a pointless player, just seems a bit daft.

His only problem is his physique imo. He easily gets muscled off the ball and is clearly being targeted once he receives the ball. Every other thing is alright.

Tbh, that doesn't say much. We had an average 77% pass completion and Spurs, 68%. So that puts him close to our average and comfortably above Tottenham's average.
He(we) played a lot of low percentage passes in that game as we tried to break down Spurs.

And gave the ball away a lot, one of his biggest problems so far

Whats wrong with all you people here? Complaining because we passed it to the back and now because the guys tries to dribble and pass it to the front .

His passing is usually very good. That Spurs game was an outlier where there was a lot of low percentage passes. Although you could argue both phrases mean the same, I wouldn't say he gives the ball away a lot - more like he loses it a lot. That I'd say is due to his physique rather than being clumsy or sloppy.
With time, he should adapt.
