Frank Lampard's Sack Watch / Sacked

Can Tuchel really be the right man for the job? He has fallen out with the club hierarchy at both his last jobs after being unhappy not having more power over transfers. I can't see him being given that kind of power at Chelsea.

I do like to get my gossip from Swindon Town legends but would prefer to hear what Kevin Horlock has to say on the matter.

Fair enough but the press have clearly moved on from talking about pressure on Lampard to actively discussing potential replacements. It usually becomes quite ominous when that happens. This chancer might or might not know something but The Athletic have been quite emphatic about what is about to happen.

I think there's a class manager in Tuchel tbh, but a while back I read he complicates things. Footballers generally aren't the smartest (maybe "smartest" is a poor choice of words, but footballers generally just want to go out on the pitch and play their game) so if he manages to translate his ideas simply I think he can make any side very dangerous. And to be fair to him, the PSG team he managed wasn't all that except for Neymar and Mbappe and he got them to the Champions League final.

The power over transfers thing however might be an issue. Abramovitj buys who he wants and who he feels is a good fit. Either how, Chelsea appointing Tuchel would atleast speed their title aspirations up I reckon. Chelsea appointing a new manager sucks for us because I would love to have played Chelsea in their current state with Lampard as manager.

It's the biggest problem in the team at the moment aside from the manager. The issue is our midfield options are fundamentally limited - we have no one who can both shield our defense and distribute the ball from deep. Here's how I'd break it down in terms of our central midfield options:

Kante - not a DM and never has been. He can be crowbarred into that role but the tradeoff is that our buildup suffers immensely. Against Arsenal, they just stood off of Kante and Zouma and only pressed Silva. Kante was totally incapable of taking advantage of the space and time afforded him, and against any team that sits deep he isn't a real option. He's also a terrible option as an 8 - he's very poor at receiving the ball with his back to goal. Needs to play in a midfield 2 with a reliable defensive midfielder who can sit deep and move the ball quickly to make up for his deficiencies - it's not a coincidence that his best periods have come alongside players like Matic or Drinkwater (when he was good) or Pogba.
Jorginho - good at distributing from deep but an utter liability defensively. Will be rendered useless by any lateral or vertical movement from any opposing attacking midfielder. Also surprisingly vulnerable to pressing and is liable to give the ball away in dangerous positions when pressed. Needs to play in a different league where pressing is less prevalent.
Kovacic - absolutely brilliant dribbler and a tidy passer, but his value is hugely curtailed if he can't dribble forwards. He's also very poor with his back to goal, so a role as an 8 is unsuitable. Basically he needs to play as the more attacking member of a pivot alongside a deep-lying defensive midfielder, so he has license to carry the ball forward and receive the ball facing the opposition goal.
Mount - our best midfielder and player this season by a distance. He is best used as an 8 but can be the more attacking of a midfield 2 in a pinch. Better in a 3 though.
Havertz - can only play as an 8 or a 10. Throwing him in as an 8 where he has more defensive responsibility was probably a mistake this year; he's struggled with the physicality of the league and exposing him to more of that was wrong. His best performances have come as a 10, so a midfield 2 behind him is required.

Thus you can see we've assembled a collection of players who can't actually play together. The most obvious missing piece is a defensive midfielder who can break up play and distribute - hence our documented interest in Declan Rice. Personally, I'd have sold Kante last summer if there was a suitable offer; he's not the easiest player to fit into a side all things considered, especially at this point in his career.

The one player I'd try to incorporate more is Billy Gilmour - he's a brilliant passer from deep areas and he's at least defensively diligent, far more so than Jorginho. I feel like Gilmour / Kante could be a functional midfield pairing, or a midfield three of Mount / Gilmour / Havertz might work. Obviously it'd depend on the overall selection as well.
Thanks.
Top summary. That line sums it up really. Wouldn't be surprised if brown envelopes were involved

I like Frank tbh he usually comes across fairly candid but generally reasonable, so I shouldn’t laugh at these quotes but they are quite poignant under the circumstances (if real)

Wow, didn't consider AVBs time.
KARMA

I reckon Tuchel has a lot more potential and actually has a style as opposed to Lampard’s team selection tombola and continuously playing players out of position.

I feel Tuchel is vastly overrated and any sort of workrate asked fron this Chelsea side is doomed from the start. .

Tuchel is very good tactically, to turn get a system in that gets the most out of the very good players we have. Will work well with the German players we have, has multi country experience and with the biggest names in the game. Is free to get in and presumably won't get more than 18-24 month deal to start.

If the club don't think Lampard can do anymore to bring us forward, he's the logical choice.

I don't think Lampard was being facetious with these quotes when he was asked about AVB's dismissal and whether player power was involved.

But kind of interesting to see life serve him up the same test almost 9 years later. Such is life I suppose.

At the time player power was cited as the main reason Abramovitch decided to part company with a manager, with the Chelsea squad failing to adapt to his methods.

Which players would it even be nowadays?

Back in the day we had the likes of Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Ballack, etc. Huge personalities who had won boatloads.

Who in the current squad would have any influence over Roman's technical advisor (Petr Cech) or Marina?

If playing badly is "player power" then that's another thing!

Sky running a headline that he will be sacked if the form doesn't improve

I mean that much is obvious but not at the end of the season like many Chelsea fans have suggested, seems it hinges on the next few results

The man hasn't a clue. Can't see why Chelsea havent done something about this, Roman is normally very decisive. The man doesn't have a clear idea what he's trying to build. That then translates to confusion in the transfer market. Now they have a group of players, although most are talented, they don't really work well together. Normally happens when building without a blueprint.

Wolves (H), Burnley (H) and Spurs (A) are their next three league games. By no means an easy run. Could see him get the sack if he doesn't manage to win at least two of those.

Agreed though Wolves aren't great at the moment and it is only Burnley so if they don't get 6 points then he deserves the critiscm

Strangely (if Lampard is still here) the one i'm most confident with is Spurs. Mou will show us a lot more respect than our form deserves and Lampard seems to have his number on head to head's for whatever reason.

We aren't in great form either, and they beat us a few weeks ago. I agree though, he needs wins and he needs them quickly.

Well he’s a club legend. Any other manager would have been dismissed by now.

Objectively, he didn't deserve the Chelsea job after one year managing some loan kids at Derby.

Frank has been very good at keeping the press on his good side, the cracks are starting to show.

I quite Liam Twomey and from I've seen, some of the pieces he writes are about as fair to Chelsea as you can get.
Liam Twomey and Simon Johnson have both stated they were getting briefed from sources about Lamps' job being in danger. Even during the game they were getting info. I suspect what they reported was true, and they generally arent troublemakers with their pieces.... i think Lampard is pissed at the fact the article was published mins after fulltime v City.

Big few weeks for Frank this. I admittedly thought he'd be gone after Leicester. However, this weekend will be irrelevant as we should be beating Luton in the cup regardless.

He absolutely cannot lose to Wolves if he wants to ensure he stays in the job. IMO of course. Next few weeks and all of February is pretty brutal on paper

Tonights Transfer Window podcast starts with Lampard. The german players dont understand the fine detail of lampards tactics. Also a feeling among the foreign players (werner, havertz, ziyech) that he is favouring the brits that have come through the youth ranks in the dressing room. Hes is losing half the dressing room.

Some german managers have been mooted as replacements, because of Chelseas investment in the young german players such as havertz and werner. But it is Lampard's job to lose.

All 1 of them.
