FourFourTwo: Louis van Gaal has told FourFourTwo who was on his transfer target list when he became Man United manager

He didn't want Kroos though and lumbered us with Rojo for the last 6 years. That's the Dutch team manager at a time we could have got Van Dijk for £15m.

Why couldn't we sign Mane, Mahrez and Kante?

Lvgs last season was leicester league winning season there were never going to sell them in the January window of that season. Unless he says he sported them in their relegation miracle the season before.

Now we can see who was actually trying to assemble the new galacticos

I remember he was very clear at the time he wanted a striker, and said the one he wanted wasn't one who had been written about in the media. That ended up being Martial. The club may have been interested anyway but it still requires the manager's approval.

I think it's generally accepted Di Maria and Falcao were pushed for by Woodward while the rest were van Gaal picks.

I think I’ve read that Van Gaal was satisfied with the Di Maria purchase until he understood that he couldn’t really thrive by following De Philosophie. Anyway, the same goes for that as with Martial and Depay, it’s a measure of cooperation. Either way, the current regime is the first time since Ferguson were we see acquisitions regularly fitting in with playing style and hitting the ground running.

I find odd that people think lvg is making it up. Doesn’t strike me as an attention seeker who’d make this stuff up. Seems like he’s telling it just like it is.

Regardless of the football I don’t see how people can doubt that Louis was a decent guy and actually had integrity. Lots of people said he was a very difficult man and he had lots of fallouts but I don’t recall dishonesty ever being a criticism. I always saw him as old school through and through.

I seem to remember Ed’s comments that Man United were the football equivalent of Disney world and could do things in the transfer market other clubs couldn’t dream of. Pretty obvious he was peddling that crap to LVG. In another interview Louis said he was getting players in who were seventh choice from his targets. Frankly I believe him over this clubs board.

Bizarre given how easy it is to check out the list and why 99% of the players on it were unobtainable.

LVG has clearly been playing too much FIFA Manager in his retirement. That list is far too unrealistic for Football Manager nevermind real life.

Neymar
In fairness this is what Ed told his managers was possible back then. Bale and Fabregas under Moyes. Ed wanted to recreate the galactico model. You can’t fault his ambition he was just hugely naive and ultimately let his managers down time and again.

Some of those don't look credible to me.

Neymar and Lewandowski joined their clubs in 2013 so not sure why LVG though they'd want to cash in on them two years later. Kante was a complete unknown in summer 2015. Perhaps he was on the summer 2016 list but Van Gaal was sacked 24 hours after the season ended and it was an open secret from January he'd be sacked at end of the season.

Main one I can remember was Mane and thinking whether he was good enough to play for Man. United, think you signed Memphis instead.

Was it really summer 2015 when Ramos was flirting strongly with joining Man. United, time does fly. I think deep down everyone knew he'd eventually agree a new contract with Real Madrid.

Mane didn't want to join us.

We weren't interested in Mahrez or Kante when Van Gaal was at the club. Van Gaal took over in 2014, Kante joined Leicester as a complete and utter unknown in 2015. If Van Gaal was actually interested in signing him, it would've been piss easy in both 2014 and 2015. Mahrez wasn't performing in Leicester, no way was Van Gaal interested in signing him in 2014.

Another example of how full of shit the looney is, Lewa signed a pre-contract for Bayern 5 months before Van Gaal took over, there was no way of signing him after Van Gaal took over.
So you're saying he desperately wanted players like Schneiderlin, Rojo, Darmian etc? Its obvious he wasn't get his 1st, 2nd or 3rd choices!

But haven’t you heard this is Manchester United and we can do things in the transfer market no other clubs can. Biggest club in the world, football’s Disneyland etc etc.

This tops Moyes' muppet list, but only marginally considering he thought we could bring back Ronaldo
Moyes was a scouting genius! He identified Ronaldo, Bale, Fabregas, Thiago & Kroos. They all ended up being class. It’s not his fault our board couldn’t get them done! If he’d got the players he wanted he’d have got in that top 6 no doubt! Everton were a tough team that year I’ll have you know! Finishing beneath them was no shame!

Imagine not buying him 1b worth of world stars. Incredible.

Hes clearly going against woodward here.

Why are people laughing at what Van Gaals saying here and yet crying about us possibly not signing Sancho on other threads & questioning Woodward themselves

We spend money differently when we are out of the CL vs when we are in it because of our owners. Look at Van Gaal's first season's signings vs second - seemed like 2 different teams, 2 different tactics, 2 different ages and so much more in 2 different ways.

What he is saying isn't about the type of player he targets- its about the fact that woodward dictates transfers much more than a manager might do. The same was said by jose Mourinho and it will be interesting to see how Ole's 2nd season transfers will turn out.

Not entirely sure where i've written any of that, have you considered text to voice apps?

What i'm saying is that Louie is making things up as he goes along. I have no idea how anyone can look at that list and think that the majority of them were serious suggestions.

Van Gaal tok over United in may 2014.

Lewa: Agreed in principle to join Bayern in 2013, signed a pre-contract in 2014.

Yup, we're sure as feck getting him.

Neymar: Made his debut for Barcelona in 2013, signed a 5 year contract with a release clause of €190mil, playing for a Barcelona side winning just about everything.

Yup, plausible as feck that one.

Higuain: Had recently moved to Napoli, €90mill release clause.

Sergio Ramos: We spent ages trying to sign him when he was using us to get a fat contract improvement at Real Madrid, he never wanted to leave Spain.

Hummels: Wanted to go to Bayern, obviously, given his links to the club

Kante: No one knew of him, surprise signing for Leicester in 2015.

Muller: We approached Bayern, told to get fecked

Mahrez: Shit until 2015/2016

At best you can say that Kante and Mahrez were players he wanted to bring the same summer he was sacked....

Milner: No way, no reported interest in him.

Mane: Didn't want to join us.

Meanwhile, Virgil Van Dijk, who is from the same country as Louie, joins Southampton in 2015 for £13mill, £3mill less than we signed fecking Rojo for. He's a proper genius that Louie.

fecking sublime that list of his

If he actually went to Woodward and suggested we should try to sign Lewandowski, less than a year after he signed a fecking 5 year contract for Bayern, we should've sacked the knobhead right then and there. Or fecking Neymar for that matter with his €190mill clause.

And some people in here reckons Louie has a point.

Great.

I was watching the game we lost against Chelsea at the Bridge with Herrera and Rooney in midfield. One thing you have to give the man is that he is brilliant at setting up a midfield.
Anyway looking at our team since he left, if we never made any signings since then, our lineup would be like this

TFM. Smalling Blind Shaw

Herrera Scot

Greenwood Depay Rashford

Martial
That team looks as good as our current one unfortunately. And this is after signing Bailly, Maguire, Lindelöf, AWB, Matic, Fred, Pogba, Fernandez, Sánchez, Lukaku, Zlatan, Mikhi.

Worst part is that majority of us were happy with these signings.

What?!?! You would take Memphis, Herrera and McTominay over Pogba, Fernandes and Matic/Fred? No way

Even after his last game AWB is better than TFM.

CB is arguable, I think Lindelof and Maguire are currently better than Smalling and Blind but for the amount we paid for Maguire he is not that much better.

first of all for the position Pogba is currently playing, Herrera is a better player. The other 2 I agree with you. About AWB, I believe with good game time TFM can prove to be an equally good defender with better attacking play to AWB. He used to defend better than this now in 2015.

About Maguire/Lindelöf vs Smalling/ Blind, I think blind is better than Lindelöf in everything and Smalling is equal to Maguire in defending but Maguire urges it with his on the ball play.

anyway maybe you are right but the point was that we shouldn’t be having this debate if we had a clear building plan.

I bet he's just saying this now. His philosophy states otherwise. Why did he get of Ángel Di María?

I get most of the criticism but why do people keep bringing up van dijk? Did people really think of van dijk as a great defender before liverpool signed him?

Our current team would dismantle that hypothetical team.

Not so sure I agree, going 3-0 down to Arsenal inside 20 minutes with the Schweinsteiger/Carrick of horror is still burnt into the mind.

He looked very, very good at Southampton

Yes. He was an obvious amazing talent.

There's a reason we had to pay a record fee for a defender to get him.

Personally I find it odd how he's slipped through the cracks for so long. There's nothing in his game that would have told me "but because of this he wouldn't be a top player". He's literally got everything.

His methods were so out of date that the only way it was bearable was if you watched it on an old black and white TV. Van Gaal made Moyes look like Bielsa. A total bullshitter who tricked us all into thinking that if given enough time, he'd turn Donald Love, Borthwick-Jakcson, Paddy McNair, Saidy Janko, Tyler Blakett and Regan Poole etc into the new Ajax team of 96.

My list of wimmins I’d like 2 shag:

1. Natalie Portman
2. Blake Lively
3. The one from Corrie and tough war series with the big norks
4. Emma Watson
5. Dua Lipa

Of all the women in the world you could have on your list, you have Natalie Portman, Emma Watson, Dua Lipa and some tart from Corrie

You need to do some more research if they are the best you could come up with :wenger::lol:

Sorry for off topic posts.

LVG is crazy, asking for these players is delusion.

He asked for Ramos and got Rojo, asked for Kante and got a 33 year old Schweinsteiger :wenger:

Oh sorry mate, I didn’t realise my list of wimmins I’d like to bone needed to be ran past a supervisor.

Anyway, the background here is - I suppose - that LVG was informed by Ed that United "could get anyone". That's the spin he's been putting on it before, anyway (LVG isn't a fan of Ed).

Of course, regardless of what one thinks about Ed, you'd be pretty feckin' naive if you took that statement (if it was ever made) literally - and thought yer Neymars and Lewas would be arriving in neat little packages after a few days, as though you'd ordered 'em via Amazon.
