First window a manager under Glazers has actually got his 'first choice' transfer targets?

The issue is that almost every year we bring whoever the manager wants.
I thought we were finally starting to move away from that model though, toward a system that involves multiple parties at the club being in alignment on transfer targets.

I don't know about the OP but the thing we can say with a high degree of confidence is we've addressed the biggest issues with the team, with players at or near the top of our list.

How the feck do you know he got his 1st choice targets?

I dont , therefore putting the question to the forum to see what fellow reds think

I think He may not have gotten his dream signing/s (ie. Kane), but its the first one that doesnt feel like a complete failure to address glaring holes in our team, as we have done almost every other window

ETH clearly really wanted Mount and Onana, and it's fair to suggest that these might have been his first choices. It's equally fair to say that he might have gone for someone like DeJong if he could have tempted him over Mount, but who knows for sure?

It seemed very much like Kane was first choice up front, and he couldn't get him, but it seems likely that Hojlund was second choice. I woke suggest that finances have played a part here, and that if Amrabat (who may or may not come in) wasn't relatively cheap, he might have gone for someone else for this position. He also seems to have missed out on both of his CB options in Kim and Disasi (again, partly due to money issues), leaving us with Jonny Evans for a season instead, which would have been a long way from his first choice I imagine.

Positionally as others have said, Kane was no1 choice for striker. FDJ would have been no1 midfield target again. Onana looks like he was no1 target.

If FDJ would have been available, would we still have gone for Mount? (different midfielders i know)

We didn’t get his first choice I suspect, but since his first choicers were probably £250m worth of players, we were never getting them unless we sold first teamers to fund them.

What I would say is that the last two summers feel way more sensible than some we've had in recent years. Feels like we've sat down with the manager and agreed what the strengths and weaknesses of the squad were, and worked to round it out. Compare that to buying Sancho with no idea what to do with him, or buying Ronaldo just because he was there, or buying Donny for no fathomable reason whatsoever and this feels a lot better.

I didn’t think we should be offering the Glazers credit for anything here. If they had just sold already, ETH would likely have had the window of his dreams, never mind simply his 1st choice.
If this window is a success the credit goes to Erik, Johnny M and Arnie for making it work INSPITE of the Glazers, they are nothing more than a drain and and weight on this club.

Pretty much exactly what I think of the transfer window as well. I'm sure ETH didn't get exactly what he wanted but with our budget the people responsible did a very good job nonetheless.

Jury is out on this I think. Only Onana looks certain to be an upgrade and we’ve taken two very expensive high risk punts in key positions. Hopefully it works but that’s definitely not guaranteed.

As for ETH, I suspect he’d regard this as an ok transfer window. No CB in is probably not ideal and ideally I would anticipate he’d have wanted the club to have got a CF in weeks ago, rather than still finalising a deal for one a week before the season starts (really, given we’ve known we’ve needed one since December at least, we should have had one sorted in June).

I think we can be fairly sure Hojlund's an upgrade on Weghorst just in terms of physical attributes and style of play (hopefully finishing too, though Weghorst obviously clocked up a surprising number of goals elsewhere), and an upgrade on Martial insofar as he's been available to play most games during his short career. Mount in theory Should be better than latter-day Eriksen in intense games when we're being heavily pressed or dealing with runners, though I'm reserving judgement on this one a little more.

You're right that we still don't know if our transfers will do well or not. But atleast the transfers are players in positions we needed to adress.

Refreshing efficiency, maybe just maybe there's no hesitancy this summer because the Glazers have quite possibly agreed to sell the club.
